A. E. van Vogt
(Redirected from A.E. van Vogt Alfred Elton van Vogt April 26 January 26 ) was a Canadian-born science fiction author . After starting his writing career by writing for "true confessions" style pulp magazines , he decided to switch to writing something that he enjoyed: science fiction. His first published science fiction story, Black Destroyer Astounding Science Fiction , 1939), depicting a fierce, carnivorous alien stalking the crew of an exploration ship was extremely popular and set the style for a number of science fiction films over the years. He wrote a large number of short stories, many of which were retrospectively patched together into novels, or " fixups " as he called them. Sometimes this was successful ( The War against the Rull ); other times the disparate stories thrown together made for an incoherent plot ( Quest for the Future He had always been interested in the idea of all-encompassing systems of knowledgethe characters in his very first story used a system called "Nexialism" to analyse the alien's behaviourand he became interested in the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski , and wrote three novels on this theme, The World of Null-A , and The Pawns of Null-A in the late , and Null-A Three in the early . (The term Null-A refers to non-Aristotelian logic In the , he became involved in L. Ron Hubbard

Category: Fiction:SciFi Fantasy Horror About the Book A. E. van Vogt: Science Fantasy’s Icon presents a study of select works by van Vogt and some limited biographical data.
The main thrust of this book is to explain how, and why, van Vogt's various real life interests were often included in his fiction and nonfiction. Van Vogt went to work immediately after finishing high school in Canada, but he devoted the rest of his life to self-education. Van Vogt believed that his eye sight could be improved by using the William Bates training methods; van Vogt devised a dream/sleep system whereby he was awakened during the night to continue working on stories and increase his writing output; he interviewed males who were deemed to be violent-types; he studied the accumulation of wealth and wrote a book about it; and, van Vogt applied semantics theories to his everyday life and gave public lectures about how words can affect personal mental health as well as communication with others.

"I wrote my stories from a subjective, schizoid isolation that was pretty grim
    - but not the grimmest, I observe with some relief." Some would say that with A. E. van Vogt's passing, the Golden Age of Science Fiction is truly gone. For he was of that Age, easily among the top ten best writers of his genre for plot complexity and originality, and a creator of worlds that stunned the mind as much as the imagination. A. E. Van Vogt was born of Dutch parents on a farm south of Winnipeg, Canada. After ten years the family moved to Winnipeg where Van spent his teen years. During this time he became a voracious reader, consuming as many as two books a day. A limited contact with Science Fiction came thru the pulp magazine, Amazing Stories, but after an editorial change, Van dropped that. It was Depression and he worked on farms, as a truck driver, and statistical clerk but was continually experimenting with writing and markets, becoming successful in the "True Story" field where repeated sales were encouraging. He added confession and love stories to his sales. In 1938, A. E. van Vogt read "Who Goes There" in Astounding and that inspired and renewed his earlier Science Fiction interest. His first SF story, "Vault of the Beast," was rejected by Campbell, who then accepted "Black Destroyer" in 1939. WW II came earlier for Canadians than Americans, but Van was rejected for poor vision. He worked for the Department of National Defense while writing

Reorienting Critics and Readers to the van Vogt Method
    by Trent Walters
The influence of Alfred Elton van Vogt (1912 - 2000) has diminished since its zenith in the late 1940s when the fan community ranked him as high or higher than Heinlein, and when fans coined the phrase 'Fans are Slans' to identify themselves with the advanced yet ostracised next-stage humans in van Vogt's first novel, Slan (1946). His fix-up (stories pieced into a novel), The Voyage Of The Space Beagle (1950), later inspired the original Star Trek series and the movie Alien . In the 1950s, however, van Vogt's popularity began to wane through, according to Algis Budrys; Damon Knight's building a reputation upon the "destruction of A.E. van Vogt." The criticisms hit home. Although his novel The World of Null-A (1948), the first hardcover science fiction novel, had popularised 'General Semantics' and created a market for science fiction in France, Knight's criticism haunted the back of van Vogt's consciousness until he revised it in 1970.

    A.E. van Vogt (born 1912)
Canadian/US writer. Van Vogt's work is essentially SF adventure whose protagonists frequently have some superhuman mental powers, derived through mutation or special training. It is this characteristic of wish-fulfillment that has made his stories so popular among adolescent readers. The supreme example of this is van Vogt's first novel, Slan , which follows the growing up a mutant with telepathic powers and enhanced intelligence (a slan), who grows to realise the vital role he will play in society. Nevertheless the stories are laced with ideas atypical and more thoroughly detailed than those used by more simplistic Golden Age writers such as E.E. Smith The Voyage of the Space Beagle has many elements of traditional Space Opera, but is interesting for its examination of shipboard politics, and a pseudo-science similar to the quasi-philosophical movement of General Semantics that van Vogt uses in his most important work, The World of Null-A , and its sequel, The Pawns of Null-A Gilbert Gosseyn (`go sane'), the protagonist of

A.E. van Vogt - Der Autor mit dem dritten Auge
    Anton, Uwe

April 1912 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kanada geboren.
