Guernica. 126. $10.00 Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by Alison Calder Aritha van Herk: Essays on Her Works , edited by Christl Verduyn, has a difficult task: to try to illuminate the work of one of Canada's best quick-change artists. Like her character Dorcas, the protagonist of the novel Restlessness , van Herk seldom stays in one place for very long. Vast critical pronouncements about her work are liable only to map where the writer was. Perhaps for this reason, Verduyn weights this collection of critical essays towards Restlessness 1999, a selected bibliography (erroneously titled 'A Selected Biography' in the text) by Karin Beeler, and a list of additional resources for researching van Herk. The Tent Peg to In Visible Ink as desire, as a vehicle to self,' ideas which would carry over fruitfully into a consideration of van Herk's novels. Christl Verduyn's article on 'the use, place, and importance of the Dutch language' centres on van Herk's critical essays, arguing that van Herk's initial loss and then partial recovery of her mother tongue, Dutch, is a powerful force in her critical and creative writings, related not only to language but to questions of family, home, and class as well. Robert Budde's essay on

University of Ottawa Press. 172. $19.95 Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by Nora Foster Stovel The most recent of the University of Ottawa's Reappraisals of Canadian Writers, Margaret Laurence: Critical Reflections , edited with an introduction by David Staines, publishes the proceedings of the Symposium on Margaret Laurence organized by Staines in 1994. Containing a dozen essays by a range of critical voices - from scholars (John Lennox and William New), through personal friends of Laurence (Joyce Marshall and Lois Wilson), to writers (Kristjana Gunnars, Robert Kroetsch, and Aritha van Herk) - this collection offers a variety of interests. Opening with David Staines's useful introduction, including a brief summary of Laurence's life and works and a short synopsis of the twelve essays in the collection, the text begins with four general essays: 'The Spirit and the Letter: The Correspondence of Margaret Laurence' by John Lennox, editor of two valuable editions of Laurence's correspondence with Al Purdy and with Adele Wiseman (with Ruth Panofsky); 'Cavewomen Div(in)ing for Pearls: Margaret Laurence and Marian Engel' by Christl Verduyn considers the correspondence between the two writers and focuses on

by Aritha van Herk
Red Deer College Press, 196 pp. Within the envelope of temporary warmth of a Chinook during a February in Calgary, a woman hastens to meet her own killer after having pursued others of his kind worldwide and found them wanting. Their meeting place? The stately Palliser Hotel, which serves not only as the main venue for the new novel by Aritha van Herk, but also as its topographic center. Dorcas, a courier by trade, has been trying to have herself killed for some time. A woman of the world whose memories are always accompanied by would-be assassins, she has returned to the closest thing to a center of the heart for her. Restlessness catalogues her last (?) night on Earth as a test of her killer's mettle and manners. Throughout the evening Dorcas reflects on her life, those who have made application to take it away, and her mysterious "Dear One." Her reason for ending her life is a literal take on the words "manic" and "depression" - the restlessness of the title. van Herk's prose shows a deft hand at work as the novel steps smoothly through the night and her protagonist's memory. Dorcas's internal monologue reveals a literary weariness with the world which occasionally seems inauthentic. This may be the source of her angst - if it is, kudos to van Herk on an amazing characterization.

WORDFEST
by Lee Shedden An Internet search can turn up the most surprising things about a person. The Web site of Cannongate Books, Will Ferguson's British publisher, says he "was born and raised in the former fur-trapping settlement of Fort Vermilion in the backwoods of northern Canada. Fortunately he managed to escape." "I think they were honestly impressed when I told them where I came from," says Ferguson in a recent interview, which took place in a confessional booth relocated to a local bar. "There was no television until 1976, we didn't have indoor plumbing. (They asked) 'Were there Indians?' And yeah, my family was a mixed family, my sisters are native. I think they found it exotic." After a period of travelling and a stint in Japan which spawned two books and his uxorious marriage, Ferguson relocated to Calgary. His first book, Why I Hate Canadians, which he describes as "all but incomprehensible" to non-Canadians, rocketed up national best-seller lists and allowed him to quit his day job. And Canada is catching on. After years of neglect by the arbiters of taste, the affable, voluble author with the baby-blue eyes has been deluged with literary prizes this year. He was voted Best Local Author in the Fast Forward Best of Calgary 2002 survey, and shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Award for How to Be a Canadian. – this book, co-authored with his brother Ian – who Will calls "the funny one" – won the Libris Award for non-fiction. HappinessTM leapt from the Leacock shortlist (the first time an author had been up for two books simultaneously) to the winners' circle, also picking up the Canadian Authors' Association Award for fiction on the way.
