Canadian Archival Inventory Series. Literary Papers. No. 15.
About the Book
The author of three novels, including the award-winning Judith (1978), as well as of numerous short stories and essays, Aritha van Herk has established herself as one of the most vigorous voices and accomplished writers on the Canadian literary scene today. These Papers provide a detailed description of her holdings in the University of Calgary Library, and will be of immense value to scholars, writers, and general readers alike. Covering the period from 1973 to 1984, they describe all the material relating to Judith and The Tent Peg , and include correspondence, photographs, versions of her short stories, as well as articles and critical essays on her works. Introduced by a perceptive and scholarly biocritical essay by Professor Ian MacLaren of the University of Alberta, The Aritha van Herk Papers constitutes a rich and significant addition to the growing list of the University of Calgary's Archival Inventory Series.

Canadian Archival Inventory Series:
Literary Papers (ISSN 0831-4497)
The Special Collections Division of The University of Calgary Library houses one of the largest archival collections of the papers of Canadian authors. This series of archival inventories, first compiled under the general editorship of the late Charles R. Steele of the university's Department of English, makes information about these holdings available. Not only are they essential tools for those who actually travel to the archives, they provide the researcher with information vital to preparation for such a visit.
For comprehensive guide to these and other Calgary holdings, please see Jean Moore (compiler) and Marlys Chevrefils and Apollonia Steele (editors): Mapping the Territory: A Guide to the Archival Holdings, Special Collections, University of Calgary Library

Aritha van Herk 1. Refusal Within what Diane Freedman calls the "wounding" (Freedman, 3) democracy of language, fiction must now - if it wishes to enjoy continuing affectivity - engage in an alterative struggle to evade both the powerful allurement of genred annointment (which has done much to institutionalize all literary forms), and to escape its gentling restraints. The difficulty for any fiction is to negotiate its own terminality, the material ideology which proposes that if an imagined world does not give a reader pleasure, it will at least offer an implied if not overt solution to the enterprise of meaning and its doubtful politics. The seductions of closure, even metafictional closure capable of swallowing itself in reverse, are posited by the narrative momentum. The girdle of chastity which has resisted picking its own lock is fiction's willingness to mollify and to tame, to collaborate in a fetish of commodification (Lentricchia, 325). 2. Aloof

Her first novel: Judith I discovered Aritha van Herk and her first novel in the early 80's - in the old times of women's lib :-). When I saw the German title - All my Pigs - I did not wish to read it but the blurb was interesting and so I bought it and did not regret. It is a book about a woman, who is changing a shallow life as a secretary in the city for a pigpen in the country. There she is able to reflect about her life and she learns to give her life more sense.
Her second novel published in German: The Tent Peg This novel deals with a woman pretending to be a man in order to get a job, she urgently wishes to get. But this is not the reverse of 'Tootsie' - if somebody recalls this movie - but a book which describes the life of the members of an Alaska expedition from each member's point of view, their experiences of work there, the loneliness of 'hard' men, their presents and pasts and last but not least their exposure to women.
Her third novel published in German: No Fixed Address This is a rather ambitious novel and requires some stamina, which is however worthwhile. And I was really nosy, why Arachne, a woman who see-saws men rapidly, as well as her jobs is traveling on her own through Canada.
