Leon Uris
Leon Uris passed away on June 21st at the age of 78. He completed his final book, O'HARA'S CHOICE , in the spring. It is an historical fiction novel about the U.S. Marine Corps that is scheduled to be released by HarperCollins in October.
Uris was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of a Polish immigrant. Though he failed English three times and never graduated from high school, he went on to become a bestselling author. Uris served as a Marine in World War II and then began submitting articles to various magazines. His first novel, BATTLE CRY, was published in 1953 when he was just 29 years old. He proceeded to write a number of hugely popular novels, including EXODUS (about the creation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948) and TRINITY (on the conflict in Ireland). In addition to these bestsellers, Uris is also well known for his 1957 screenplay, Gunfight at the OK Corral

LEON URIS American writer whose bestseller Exodus (1958) was immediately translated into some 50 languages, among others into Finnish. Uris is known for his panoramic, action-filled novels which often depict determined individuals during the dramatic times of modern history. His central themes are the indomitability of the human spirit and the restorative capacity of romantic love. "This was what I came to found. The conquest of loneliness was the missing link that was, one day, going to make a decent novelist out of me. If you are out here and cannot close off the loves and hates of all that back there in the real world, the memories will overtake you and swamp you and wilt your tenacity. Tenacity, stamina... close off to everything and everyone but your writing. That's the bloody price. I don't know, maybe it's some kind of ultimate selfishness. Maybe it's part of the killer instinct. Unless you can stash away and bury thoughts of your greatest love, you cannot sustain the kind of concentration that breaks most men trying to write a book over a three- or four-year period." (from Mitla Pass, 1988)

    'Trinity' was the seed,
    'Redemption' was
    the unplanned progeny
    By Thomas A. Larkin
When novelist Leon Uris finished writing "Trinity" almost two decades ago, he had no plans to write a continuation of the story of the Larkin family and Ireland.
Interviewed recently via telephone, Uris, suffering from a bad back, talked about why "Redemption," published in June as the continuation to "Trinity," was due.
"It evolved from some of the fallout from 'Trinity,'" he said. "I realized there was more to be said about the Larkin family and certainly more to be understood about the Easter Rising and the significance of it.
"What evolved was really an unplanned pregnancy, and when the time came for me to get to the typewriter again, 'Redemption' was what I wanted to get to the typewriter with."
"Trinity" was published in 1976, and it became a beloved novel. One that is still talked about among writers' and readers' circles. Tremendous amounts of fact are given to the reader through prose like only Uris can write, fans note.
The key to both novels was research, Uris said.

    Leon Uris's Exodus
Leon Uris embarking on his Exodus research mission to Israel. 1956. Leon Uris collection. Leon Uris, the American novelist best known for Exodus, an epic novel about the founding of the state of Israel, passed away on June 21, 2003. Born in Baltimore on August 23, 1924, to Jewish parents of Russian-Polish origin, Uris attended public schools in Norfolk, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. He quit high school shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and joined the Marines, serving as a radio operator in the campaigns at Guadacanal and Tarawa, during which time he contracted malaria and was sent home to serve out the remainder of the war. Uris based his first novel, Battle Cry (1953), on his experience in the Marines, and later moved to Hollywood to write the screenplay for Warner Brothers. The adaptation was released in 1955. Uris felt research was paramount to his writing. "Research to me is as important, or more important, than the writing. It is the foundation upon which the book is built." He prepared for writing Exodus by reading nearly 300 books, traveling 12,000 miles within Israel's borders, and interviewing 1,200 people.
