Historic Facts Everybody Ought To Know . . . Tyndale, An Ana-Baptist, Was Hanged . . . His Body Burned . . . For Translating The Bible Into English. ". . .
I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus . . ." II Timothy 2:9,10. NEARLY 500 YEARS AGO Nearly one hundred years before Columbus discovered America, there was a boy named John Gooseflesh, living in the old town of Mentz. His mother helped to make a living for the family by preparing parchment for the priests to write on. John liked very much to carve and cut with his knife. One day he was sitting beside the fire watching a pot of purple dye that his mother was heating and amusing himself by carving and cutting his name in wood. Suddenly one of the pieces of wood, with a letter cut on it, fell into the dye pot. He snatched at it, caught it, but dropped it again, this time onto a piece of parchment lying nearby. It fell upside down, and when he picked it up, there on the parchment, was the letter "h" clearly printed.

At the time Tyndale might have felt detached from it all, living the lonely and unrooted life of a fugitive and exile. But in the long view he was actually integral to some of the most significant moments and movements ofthe early 16th century—great societal upheavals, the aftershocks of which are still being felt in our modern world. Blessed Lord, who has caused all holy Scriptures
to be written for our learning; Grant, that we may in
such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and
inwardly digest them, that by patience, and
comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and

William Tyndale As a young man, William Tyndale is said to have promised a priest that he would eventually make it possible for a boy driving a plough to know as much of the Scriptures as did the priest. Educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, and Cambridge, William Tyndale was appalled by the ignorance of parish priests, and was persuaded by this to translate the Bible into English. The English Bible had been banned since 1480, mostly because the Wycliffe Bible had been used by the outlawed Lollards, and Tyndale wanted to produce a better translation. Rather than translating from the Latin Vulgate , as Wycliffe had, he would work from the Greek and Hebrew of the original Old and New Testaments. While he had hoped to have the support of the bishops in England, but they feared that an English translation would serve to spread Lutheran ideas; so fearful, in fact, that Tyndale soon found that his life was in danger.

William Tyndale - Heretical Blasphemer? I have recently purchased an updated edition of William Tyndale's 1534 New Testament, republished by Yale University Press in 1989, (this edition in 1995). In it David Daniell has updated much of the Old English into the modern, so as to make it easier to read today. The translation itself is claimed to remain intact and faithful to the 1534 edition. In looking it over, some interesting items have come to light. According to Mr. Daniell, the Bishop of London (Tunstall) hunted down every one of Tyndale's Bibles he could find and had them burned at St. Paul's cross. He very nearly succeeded in destroying them all, as only a dozen originals still exist today. What is not commonly known today is that much of the King James Version borrowed heavily from Tyndale's work, though he is not generally credited for it. At the time, King Henry VIII's chancellor, Sir Thomas More, had this to say about Tyndale- he calls him 'a beast', as one of the 'hell-hounds that the devil hath in his kennel', discharging a 'filthy foam of blasphemies out of his brutish beastly mouth'. Tyndale is quoted by John Foxe as follows- Master Tyndale happened to be in the company of a learned man, and in communing and disputing with him drove him to that issue, that the learned man said: 'We were better be without God's law than the Pope's. Master Tyndale, hearing that, answered him.

Martin Luther and William Tyndale on the State of the Dead. On December 19, 1513, in connection with the eighth session of the fifth Lateran Council, Pope Leo X issued a Bull ( Apostolici regimis ) declaring, "We do condemn and reprobate all who assert that the intelligent soul is mortal" (Damnamus et reprobamus omnes assertentes animam intellectivam mortalem esse). This was directed against the growing "heresy" of those who denied the natural immortality of the soul, and avowed the conditional immortality of man. The Bull also decreed that "all who adhere to the like erroneous assertions shall be shunned and punished as heretics." The decrees of this Council, it should be noted, were all issued in the form of Bulls or constitutions (H. J. Schroeder, Disciplinary Decrees of the General Councils , 1937, pp. 483, 487).
In 1516 Pietro Pomponatius, of Mantua, noted Italian professor and leader among the Averrorists (who denied the immortality of the soul), issued a [pg. 570]

Percival J. Baldwin (1907-1975) was a senior executive in a major Canadian manufacturing corporation located in Toronto. He was raised in the Calvinistic Baptist tradition and developed an early interest in theology and an insatiable appetite for the writings of the Puritans. During the years after World War II he assembled a 2,000 volume Puritan studies collection, including the original editions donated to Tyndale University College and Seminary.
We are very grateful to his daughter Audrie and her husband Bruce Cossar for their generous donation of this collection, which was given to the J. William Horsey Library in 1988.
This 203 volume collection consists primarily of works by the Puritans and their contemporaries, with most of the titles being published between 1625-1700. There are a few titles published before 1600, the earliest being a copy of the "Geneva Bible" printed in 1576. There are also a few works published after 1700. Among the most significant authors represented in the collection are James Durham, John Owen, William Perkins and Samuel Rutherford. A portion of this collection is listed in the Short-Title Catalogue of [Rare] Books, edited by Donald Wing of Yale University. This catalogue is a standard reference work for those seeking to locate copies of items published between 1641 and 1700.

James 1:21-25

John 12:44-50

Psalm 1
or
Psalm 15
Preface of the Epiphany A lmighty God, you planted in the heart of your servant William Tyndale a consuming passion to bring the Scriptures to people in their native tongue, and endowed him with the gift of powerful and graceful expression and with strength to persevere against all obstacles: Reveal to us your saving Word, as we read and study the Scriptures, and hear them calling us to repentance and life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
James 1:21-25
R id yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act they will be blessed in their doing.
