Tyler, Anne
(1941- ), author Born on October 25, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Anne Tyler, the daughter of Quakers, spent her early years in North Carolina and in various Quaker communities in the Midwest and South. At age 16, she entered Duke University (Raleigh, North Carolina), graduating three years later. She worked as a bibliographer at Duke and as a librarian at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, before settling in Baltimore, Maryland, where she turned to writing full-time. Her first novel, If Morning Ever Comes, was published in 1964. Though it received little critical attention, it revealed the polished prose and understated examination of personal isolation and the difficulty of interpersonal communication that would also characterize her later work. Publication of The Tin Can Tree (1965) and The Clock Winder (1972) followed, but it was not until the appearance of Celestial Navigation (1974) and Searching for Caleb (1975) that Tyler came to nationwide attention. Her smooth, witty style and her descriptions of modern Southern life won her many readers, and her next novel, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1982), was a national best-seller. Her highly successful novel

A deeply moving first novel by a superb new talent, Flesh Wounds belongs on the shelf next to Anne Tyler, Jane Hamilton and Jacquelyn Michard. In scenes of shattering dramatic intensity, Mick Cochrane tells the story of a midwestern family waking up to the unpleasant truths that it would rather keep hiddena wrenching process that ends on a genuinely moving and wholly earned note of reconciliation and renewal.
For this issue of Bold Type , Cochrane has contributed an essay on human nature and how his writing aims to plumb its depths. You'll also find an excerpt from the novel that paints a sharp portrait of a man whose past is quickly catching up with him.

Corrections A Patchwork Planet Laura Green reviews 'A Patchwork Planet' by Anne Tyler By Laura Green A train pulls out of Baltimore's Penn station. Boarding passengers include Barnaby, the scruffily dressed, estranged scion of the "old" Baltimore Gaitlins, and a prim, hair-netted young woman. Idly snooping, Barnaby sees this woman accept a mysterious package from a frantic stranger, who claims it is a passport forgotten by his daughter, awaiting its delivery in Philadelphia. On his way, reluctantly, to a rendezvous with his ex-wife and 9-year-old daughter, Barnaby spends the train ride futilely willing the prim woman to open the package, astonished at her ability to be "so well behaved even when she thought nobody was looking." He also waits, without much hope, for a visitation from the Gaitlin angel. It was such an angel a "big, tall woman with golden hair coiled in a braid on top of her head" who first suggested to Barnaby's great-grandfather the invention of the wooden dress-form that made the Gaitlins rich. We know that Barnaby will find his angel, though perhaps not where he first looks; we also know that his search will lead him through family crises and reconciliations. Indeed, the theme and action of "A Patchwork Planet," as in all of Tyler's novels, can be summed up in Barnaby's reflections on how "these family messes" are temporarily resolved: "The most unforgivable things got ... oh, not forgiven. Never forgiven. But swept beneath the rug, at least; brushed temporarily to one side; buried in a shallow grave."

    Anne Tyler: The Accidental Tourist
They watched the news, dutifully, and then they went out to the sun porch and sat at their grandparents' card table. They played something called Vaccination a card game they'd invented as children, which had grown so convoluted over the years that no one else had the patience to learn it. In fact, more than one outsider had accused them of altering the rules to suit the circumstances. "Now, just a minute," Sarah had said, back when she'd still had hopes of figuring it out. "I thought you said aces were high." "They are." "So that means" "But not when they're drawn from the deck." "Aha! Then why was the one that Rose drew counted high?" "Well, she did draw it after a deuce, Sarah." "Aces drawn after a deuce are high?" "No, aces drawn after a number that's been drawn two times in a row just before that." Sarah had folded her fan of cards and laid them face down the last of the wives to give up. Macon was in quarantine and had to donate all his cards to Rose. Rose moved her chair over next to his and played off his points while he sat back, scratching the cat behind her ears. Opposite him, in the tiny dark windowpanes, he saw their reflections hollow-eyed and severely cheekboned, more interesting versions of themselves.
