Chase Twichell
August 1998 Chase Twichell was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1950, first child of a troubled marriage that would last another forty years before it came apart in divorce. Her father taught Latin at Choate, a boy's prep school, where he also coached baseball and worked in the administration. Her mother raised the three daughters, then took a job in a book store, where she worked for many years. In the summers and during vacations, the family lived in Keene Valley, New York, in the Adirondacks just south of Montreal, where her father's family had gone for many generations. This early intimacy with wilderness has probably been the single greatest influence on Twichell's life and work. Twichell attended elementary school in New Haven, then at 14 was sent to St. Timothy's, a small girl's boarding school in Maryland, for four years. It was a brutal place, with little humor and no idle time. First bell rang at 6:45, and every minute was accounted for between then and lights out (no talking) at 9:30 or, for the older girls, a little later. Punishments for breaking the countless rules were bizarre: talking after lights out: two extra hours of study hall before breakfast. Smoking, chewing gum, or leaving the remote campus without permission: expulsion. Not wearing a slip: the offender's skirt was lifted in front of the whole school as the slip-checkers moved down the line. Twichell, who suffered from attention deficit disorder, did poorly at St. Timothy's, finishing in the bottom fifth of her class. But by the time she left, she had committed herself to the secret life of poetry.

Early Lesson; Zazen, Wired;
Zazen, Tired; Mountains and Rivers Cat and Mirror Stray Ignorant Poem EARLY LESSON Sitting zazen is like trying to be a tree.
I'm bad at it, impatient. I want the way
into the sap and wood to be violent, athletic,
so I keep my mind chopping at it, asking
how can I become the tree, if I am the tree?
ZAZEN, WIRED It's like thrashing out past the breakers
into the opaque green swells,
the alien salt a thrill. The beach is lightbulb-white, and sears whoever lies down on it to rest. ZAZEN, TIRED An animal chooses this place for its den and winters here, sleeping month after month in the musk of its own absence so it can awaken more fully human. MOUNTAINS AND RIVERS Dry Waterfall that's what it's called in the language of the garden, rocks and plants suggesting a quick-running stream, though it's only the eye that moves. I just keep levering and nudging rocks around until the place looked a little trampled but serene.

CHASE TWICHELL
Dangerous Playgrounds The father is teaching his eight-year old
to clean a grouse, the purple-gray skin
pimpled by plucking,
and so delicate that one roughly-pulled
pinch of feathers could tear it.
With little bruises where
the shot went in. If you push on the bumpy sole of a foot, the toes wrap around your finger like a baby's hand. It's a reflex. He says clean , not gut as the other fathers do, the organs slippery and ruby, nothing soft, even the liver rubbery, and the heart hard as an unripe cherry, all of it smelling like neither excrement nor sex, but something in between. At the piano someone's great uncle entertained the children in the uninsulated octagonal room, clean Yankee architecture a century old. We sang "Auld Lang Syne" and I have ridden the wind, I have ridden the sea, I have ridden the ghosts that flee from the vaults of death with a chilling breath over all of Galilee I already knew that words do not live entirely inside language.

INTERVIEWS WORLD MEDIA WATCH P.M. CARPENTER MAUREEN FARRELL ... FAQ A Poet Against the War, Chase Twichell A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
by Dwayne Eutsey "Poetry's not window cleaning. It breaks the glass." Chase Twichell According to First Lady Laura Bush, "There is nothing political about American literature. Everyone can like American literature, no matter what your party." Besides being an odd thing for a former teacher and librarian to say (she's never seen the embarrassing list of books banned in this country for political reasons?), Bush's statement also expresses an assumption among the self-satisfied elites in this country (represented by her husband) that believe "good literature" really means "well-behaved literature." According to this attitude, "good" literary works, and the "good" writers who create them, are above the unwashed world of politics (especially those espoused by the Left). A trait of good American literature, liked as it is by everyone, after all, is that it should not offend the reader, especially those who sip wine and indulge in polite discussion at literary receptions hosted by people like Laura Bush.
