144. Literary Pilgrimages
Travels to some of the places that mark twain lived and worked, including his Hartford, Connecticut home and Hannibal, Missouri.
http://faculty.quinnipiac.edu/libraries/tballard/mtpilgrimages.html
Hannibal's two most renowned citizens are immortalized in a downtown park. I've followed Mark Twain all around the world - it seems like anywhere I've been, he got there first. So far my favorite spots with Twain connections are Maui (He loved the place so much that he couldn't even write while he was there), Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, and Paris (which he hated).
Virginia City managed to give a flavor
of what it must have been like in the 1860's.
The city is built along the side of a mountain,
so each street is even with the rooftops
of the street before - you could imagine how Twain
made his famous rooftop dance with Artemus Ward.
We played the slots in the Mark Twain saloon
and my wife experienced the kind of luck
that Clemens was blessed with:
the good news was that she got 7 plums in a row.
The bad news was that she only bet a nickel. Betting 35 cents would have netted her a thousand dollars. We did win enough to pay for the train ride to the next town. At the Territorial Enterprise offices, there is a toilet seat in the printing room with the sign "Mark Twain sat here."

148. Bacheller Remarks At 70th Birthday
Contains an article consisting of a contemporary's remarks about the author which were made at his 70th birthday celebration on December 23, 1905.

From Harper's Weekly Magazine
MT 70 th Birthday Supplement: 23 December 1905
IRVING BACHELLER said:

I F the world's a stage in which every one has a part, there are all too many of us among the supers. Sometimes I have wondered why Mark Twain is permitted to hold the centre of the stage and talk with kings and princes, and delight or dismay them with fine wit, while our business is only to laugh and clap our hands and do the small, inglorious errands of the play. He has no uncommon talent as a player. Most any of us, had we his lines, had we his make-up, and especially, his wig, could win applause. (Laughter.)
Suddenly a wave of laughter sweeps over the stage from the far left. A young man has come in view, and is telling a story. The saddened spirit of the crowd finds relief and joy in it. They call him to the centre of the stage, and there he has remained, shooting folly as it flew, and filling all hearts with the immeasurable bounty of his own. The crowd began to hustle Satan towards the wings. He voluntarily gave them the considerable benefit of half his salary for two weeks and then resigned. Our comedian scattered the bread of happiness, and dark shadows grew less in the light of his good cheer. Many kept up their policies in the old insurance company, and read Mark Twain for consolation, and wisdom came with humor and courage with cheerfulness. Now who has not discovered the moral of the great play that heaven may be extended so as to fill the future and the present and leave no room for hell save in the past?

A Talk Delivered April 4, 1992
to the Mark Twain Association of New York
By Peter Salwen
Last month, as you probably know, marked the hundredth anniversary of Walt Whitman's death. Whitman, of course, was the great poet of New York, and many cultural institutions and groups are now honoring him with a two-month-long celebration that continues through the end of May. If you venture about five miles down Broadway from here, to the corner of Bleecker Street, you'll find yourself in front of a curious literary landmark. There's nothing to show it the ground floor today contains a Korean greengrocer and the rest of it seems to be used as some sort of warehouse but in this building a link was formed between the two literary giants of nineteenth-century America, Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. In the years leading up to the Civil War, a noisy bohemian group led by Whitman and the publisher Henry Clapp used to crowd into Pfaff's beer cellar under theBroadway pavement. Clapp was the publisher of the Saturday Press

The human race consists of the dangerously insane and such as are not.
If we had less statesmanship we could get along with fewer battleships.

Mark Twain stunned the political establishment by announcing his candidacy for the presidency. An independent in politics since the '80s, he's running as a third party candidate. Initial polls show 100% support for his positions on the issues, with the strongest support coming from those who agree with these positions: Foreign Policy: It is easier to stay out than get out. Crime: Nothing incites to money-crimes like great poverty or great wealth. The Economy: The lack of money is the root of all evil. Family Values: It is better to have bad morals than none at all. Education: I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Defense: An inglorious peace is better than a dishonorable war.

Twain, Mark Biography
Mark Twain (1835-1910) - pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens American writer, journalist, humorist, who won a worldwide audience for his stories of youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Sensitive to the sound of language, Twain introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. In Green Hills of Africa , Ernest Hemingway wrote: All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn "When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboatman." (from 'Old Times on the Mississippi', 1875) Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) was born in Florida, Missouri, of a Virginian family. He was brought up in Hannibal, Missouri. After his father's death in 1847, Twain was apprenticed to a printer and wrote for his brother's newspaper. Twain worked later as a licensed Mississippi river-boat pilot (1857-61), adopting his name from the call ('Mark twain!' - meaning by the mark of two fathoms) used when sounding river shallows. But this isn't the full story: he had also satirized an older writer, Isaiah Sellers, who called himself Mark Twain. In 1861 Twain served briefly as a confederate irregular. The Civil War put an end to the steamboat traffic and Clemens moved to Virginia City, where he edited two years Territorial Enterprise . On February 3, 1863, 'Mark Twain' was born when he signed a humorous travel account with that pseudonym.
