Prezidenta kandidatiĝo
de Mark TWAIN
elangligis Donald J. HARLOW

Mark Twain National Forest is a land of limestone mountains of surprising steepness, clear-rushing streams perfect for canoeing, and a diversity of plant life as remarkable as it is endlessly interesting. Mark Twain National Forest Wildflowers and wildlife is plentiful, making the forest popular with hunters, trappers, fishers, and wildlife photographers and observers. Hikers can pick and choose trails from one of the country's richest trail systems. Lying mostly in the Ozark Plateau, Mark Twain is 1.5 million acres of forested area that was once given up for dead after timbering operations denuded these hills by the turn of the century. Careful stewardship has brought the forest back to life, and the forest now holds some of the Midwest's wildest, most remote land. In all, seven federally designated wilderness areas cover 63,000 acres of the forest, including Bell Mountain Wilderness in the St. Francois Mountains, one of the oldest landmasses in North America.

The Tweed is one of the best salmon streams in Scotland. From the time of Kenneth the Grim (d. 1005) to that of James VI. (1600) the Tweed uplands were the favorite hunting ground of the Scots monarchs, and, at a later date, the Coven.anters found refuge in. the recesses of the hills and on the banks of Talla Water, an early right-hand affluent. Close to Stobo Castle is Stobo Kirk, the mother-church of the district, founded by St Kentigern and probably the oldest ecclesiastical building in Tweeddale, a mixture of Saxon, Norman and modern Gothic. HARTFORD, CONN. "Here's what we had to work with," Tom Kronenberger told me; we were standing in the driveway of the multi-hued brick structure that Samuel L. Clemens built for his family in 1874. The difference between the original photos of the house, taken at various times during its history, and the computer enhancements was dramatic. The originals were but postage-stamp size, yet the enhanced views were nearly eight by ten inches. Utilizing this modern graphics technique, Kronenberger and his team have been able to compare the brickwork of such architectural elements as the chimneys and caps, as originally created by Clemens' masons, then as repaired in 1905. The two versions differed significantly from each other. Kronenberger Restorations is working on behalf of, and in cooperation with, the independent Mark Twain Memorial and Library Organization. But that work has been funded by a $1 million restoration grant from the State of Connecticut.

Twain, Mark Sources Pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens American humorist, newspaperman, lecturer, and one of America's greatest writers. Born in Florida, Missouri, he drew on his childhood along the Mississippi for characters and incidents for his best work. He moved to New York in 1853, returning to the River in 1857 when he became a steamboat pilot until the Civil War ended river traffic. His fame as a humorist and storyteller was established with the publication of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaeras County (1865). His works include Tom Sawyer The Prince and the Pauper Huckleberry Finn (1884), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889). In in his last years Twain became a satirist, famous for cynical epigrams. His "Diaries" of Adam and Eve were published in Harper's in April 1901 and December 1905, respectively. Twain was a master of the technical devices of exaggeration, irreverence, and deadpan seriousness; he introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. This is Twain, Mark

    SOUTHWESTERN HUMOR AND MARK TWAIN
by Angel Price The call of the frontier is an inescapable beckoning throughout the history of humanity. The wealth of land and opportunity in America provided a perfect outlet for this wanderlust. The history of the Southwest is one of expansion into rough territory and life in a rural, uniquely American landscape. The main characters in the story are passed down to us through the words and images of the Southwestern humorists. These humorists were most often professionals doctors, lawyers, editorswho were writing as amateurs, often anonymously. Utilizing their experience, imagination and wit, these men created a legacy of characters which amused their contemporaries while helping to shape the enduring myth of the frontier in America. The heyday of Southwestern humor culminates in the period between the 1830's and the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. The Southwest to which these humorists refer is present day Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri. The genre that developed originates from the politics and oral histories of a burgeoning region full of fire and out to prove itself to the world. This enthusiasm manifests itself in bawdy, violent, and predominately masculine portrayals of the world of the Southwest. Yet beneath the savagery of the stories, there is an effort at realism and regional descriptions that had not been attempted previously. Humorists like Augustus B. Longstreet, George Washington Harris and Johnson Jones Hooper (among others) were the forerunners of Mark Twain. They created a place in literature for American vernacular and regional caricatures with their overblown stereotypes of the frontiersman and yeoman farmer. Their work proved to be the fertile ground which allowed Twain to flourish in his time. This site is designed to provide an anthology of some of the best known works of Southwestern humor and basic biographical information about the authors. It will also explore the means of publication as well as noting well known character types (i.e.

American writer, journalist, humorist, who won a worldwide audience for his stories of youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Sensitive to the sound of language, Twain introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. In Green Hills of Africa, Ernest Hemingway wrote: "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn..."
