Overview
One of Hannibal's most famous residents was the 19th century author, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Many historical landmarks related to this legendary writer are listed below Another famous local resident was Margaret Tobin who later married, joined Denver high society and then gained public fame as the The Unsinkable Molly Brown for helping passengers to safety from the sinking Titanic Hannibal is a popular birding destination as it lies on the southern end of the migration route for bald eagles who come to the high Mississippi River bluffs in the area. For best viewing try the Saverton Dam, about 9 miles north of town on SR-79. Also try the town of Clarksville which is south of Hannibal. For a scenic drive along the Mississippi River, try the 86-mile stretch of SR-79 that goes from here south to St. Peters, MO. The best time of year to make this journey is in the fall when the trees turn bright colors.

Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Twain, Mark (Samuel Clemens) Writer (1835-1910) Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Samuel Clemens had passed through several careers by his thirtieth birthday: journeyman printer, riverboat pilot, silver prospector, newspaper reporter. In his first newspaper job, at the Virginia City (Nevada) Enterprise , he adopted his famous pen name, Mark Twain. In 1865, he gained overnight fame with the short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." published in The Saturday Press and widely reprinted. He continued to travel widely over the next few years, giving lectures (a major source of income and fame throughout his life) and filing correspondent reports for various newspapers. In 1869, he drew on his European sojourn for Innocents Abroad , a travel narrative which satirized both local cultures and American tourists.
Samuel Longhorne Clemens (1835-1910) In 1871, Twain settled in Hartford, Connecticut, where he produced a series of well-known books over the next four decades. His distinctive writing style blended folk humor, barbed satire, and an unparalleled grasp of American idioms. Several works revisitedand embellishedhis past experiences: Roughing It (1872), his prospecting trip out west;
