81. The Mark Twain House
Descriptive overview.
http://www.loc.gov/bicentennial/propage/CT/ct-1_h_larson7.html
The Mark Twain House The Mark Twain House is significant as a core symbol of Hartford's rich Victorian legacy and as tangible evidence of the residence of one of America's most important and influential literary figures. In 1873, Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, purchased land at the western edge of the City of Hartford, in an area known as Nook Farm. He engaged the New York architect, Edward Tuckerman Potter, to design the house. Mrs. Clemens had sketched a layout showing the relationship of the various rooms to views over the then open countryside. The house was completed in 1874, and the Clemens family moved in during September of that year. In 1881, following the success of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and several lecture tours, the kitchen wing was enlarged, and the major rooms completely redecorated by "Associated Artists," a distinguished firm of interior designers, which included Louis Comfort Tiffany, Lockwood de Forest, Candace Thurber Wheeler, and Samuel Colman. Clemens, his wife and three children lived here from 1874 to 1891.

The Political Art of Dan Beard
    By Jim Zwick
    D
aniel Carter Beard (1850-1941) had an unusually diverse career that brought him into national prominence as an illustrator, reformer, naturalist, and co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America. The son of painter James H. Beard, he and two of his brothers, Frank and James C. Beard, became prominent New York-based illustrators and cartoonists after establishing a shared studio in 1878. Dan's illustrations appeared in many of the popular periodicals of the time. Among reformers of the late 19th century and early 20th century, Beard was well-known as an early and active supporter of the Single Tax Movement inspired by Henry George's 1879 book Progress and Poverty. Most of the illustrations presented here reflect that interest. In 1889, Dan Beard's work came to Mark Twain's attention and he recruited Beard to illustrate A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Moonblight and Six Feet of Romance . Beard also illustrated many of Twain's later books, including

Remembered today as an author and humorist, in his day, Brother Samuel L. Clemens, known popularly as "Mark Twain," was one of the most successful public speakers on the circuit. Brother Mark Twain (right) was born on November 30, 1835. No writer in history was more in demand as a speaker. Remembered today as an author and humorist, in his own day he was one of the most successful public speakers on the circuit. As he freely admitted, he loved to hear himself talk, largely because he got so much moral instruction out of it. The same rules, sort of, applied to drinking. Please read Bro. "Man is the animal that blushes.
He is the only one that does it
    or has occasion to."
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835, one of six children. When Samuel was four, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri a little town on the west bank of the Mississippi River. His father, John Marshall Clemens, was a freethinker, a persuasion not at all uncommon in the Midwest of that period. He is also said to have been stern and puritanical, and was not Samuel's favorite parent. One of Samuel's biographers, Edward Wagenknecht, declares that his temperament was inherited from his mother, Jane Lampton Clemens, who was conventionally religious, but not fanatically so:
From her Mark Twain inherited many specific tastes and tendencies his love of red, his tenderness toward all animals, especially cats, his quick, impulsive emotions, his lifelong habit of protecting the outcast and unfortunate. no stray animal was ever turned away from Jane Clemens' door. At one time she was feeding nineteen cats. She kept no birds, for she could not endure to think of any creature deprived of its freedom. She had her son's curiosity also. With her it took the special form of investigating strange religions, which she considered carefully but without committing herself to them. She was capable of great indignation and of dauntless courage. Once she opened her door to a fugitive girl whom her brutal father was pursuing with a rope, then planted herself in it and gave the brute such a tongue-lashing that he slunk away. Like her son, she mingled freely, in her conversation, fact and fiction. Like him, she was unconventional, as when she heard two men on a train arguing about where Mark Twain was born and turned around and told them. "I'm his mother," she said. "I ought to know. I was there." Something of his cryptic gift of phrase was hers also, as shown in her remark, "Never learn to do anything. If you don't learn, you'll always find someone else to do it for you."

Mark Twain , "Was the World Made for Man?"
Mark Twain : Satan, writing back to his friends in Heaven upon visiting Earth, showing his contempt toward this curious invention, Man, after having a few days earlier earlier been banished for a thousand years for so doing prior to investigation, in Letters from the Earth (1909?; published in 1962) He killed all those people every male.
They had offended the Deity in some way. We know what the offense was, without looking; that is to say, we know it was a trifle; some small thing that no one but a god would attach any importance to. It is more than likely that a Midianite had been duplicating the conduct of one Onan, who was commanded to "go into his brother's wife" which he did; but instead of finishing, "he spilled it on the ground." The Lord slew Onan for that, for the lord could never abide indelicacy.... Some Midianite must have repeated Onan's act, and brought that dire disaster upon his nation. If that was not the indelicacy that outraged the feelings of the Deity, then I know what it was: some Midianite had been pissing against the wall. I am sure of it, for that was an impropriety which the Source of all Etiquette never could stand. A person could piss against a tree, he could piss on his mother, he could piss on his own breeches, and get off, but he must not piss against the wall that would be going quite too far. The origin of the divine prejudice against this humble crime is not stated; but we know that the prejudice was very strong so strong that nothing but a wholesale massacre of the people inhabiting the region where the wall was defiled could satisfy the Deity.

Mortimer!" atakanta miajn orelojn, kaj kiam mi sukcesis kolekti mian konscion mi eksidis kaj diris:
