Interview with Bob and Anne Passovoy, April 2000 Interview with Harry Turtledove, June 1998 Interview with Harry Turtledove, June 1998 Interviewer: Jeremy Bloom If you’ve been to a WorldCon in the past decade, you’ve seen Harry Turtledove. Surpassingly tall and gangly, with a high balding pate and bushy beard, you might mistake him for a sci-fi Byzantine monk. Which is somewhat appropriate, in that he holds a doctorate in Byzantine history. We spoke to him in his tastefully cluttered living room of his small house in Canoga Park, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. Actually, the house would be a fairly good size if it was just him and all the books, but when you add in his wife (mystery writer Laura Frankos) and daughters Allison, Rachel, and Rebecca, it makes for crowding. Buy more of his books so he can move into a bigger place... Jeremy Bloom: You’ve been coming to WorldCons for years, and writing for years, but serving as Toastmaster for Chicon 2K will be your first major role at one...

The Voices Told Me to Clean the Ziggurat Today
In 1976, a repentant Behaviorist named Julian Jaynes published an exceedingly strange book on The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind It's a remarkable conjecture, but not one to take seriously. (I can think of at least half a dozen reasons for extreme skepticism off the top of my head.) Still, it has obvious possibilities for science fiction. Return to bicamerality is, for instance, a plot device in two (unrelated) novels by Neal Stephenson. [ Note with spoilers for those books. ] I'm sure there are stories with bicameral aliens (much more plausible neurologically), but I've not run across any. Turtledove's novel is the first work of fiction I've encountered which incorporates an obvious improvement upon Jaynes's original hypothesis. The ancients, after all, don't just show the gods telling people ``do this'' or ``boy, what we have here is a failure to communicate''; they show the gods taking actual physical actions. (Apollo doesn't just tell people what to do, he shoots them, and other gods.) If we accept one set of reports on Homer's say-so, why not both? This means that the gods were actual physical beings, looking more or less like human beings but much more powerful. (It also means that ghosts were around, hungry for offerings of blood and wine.) Instead of very implausible changes to the workings and anatomy of the human nervous system, the breakdown of ``bicamerality'' would mean that people somehow or other got out from under the gods' thumbs.

"Ruled Britannia"
"Thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges." Groaning under Spanish rule for ten years, ever since England failed to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588, the London citizens in this alternative history must endure the Inquisition, the imprisonment of their unfortunate Queen Elizabeth in the Tower of London, the threats of Irish barbarians hired as thugs and enforcers by the Spanish occupiers, and the country's constant sense of uncertainty, born of religious and political turmoil. The pageantry and spectacle of an auto-da-fe, both awe-inspiring and terrifying, open this novel, its horrors made real by the cry of a condemned man, begging for aid from an acquaintance in the mob, William Shakespeare, who can do nothing to help, and whose own life is endangered by the man's pitiful appeals. Shakespeare here is a hero at the height of his powers as an actor and playwright. Sharing one-third of a room in a boarding house, eating and writing by firelight in a pub, dealing with the egos of his acting company, and associating with people from all walks of societyfrom mysterious characters like Nick Skeres and the 'witch' Cicely Sellis, to Francis Bacon and Lord Burghley (Sir William Cecil)Shakespeare is the pivot around whom all the action revolves.

Infobot: info@chicon.org Harry Turtledove began his writing career somewhat atypically, as an historian of the Byzantine Empire. After producing a highly regarded translation of the Chronicle of Theophanes and a number of scholarly articles (some of them cited in The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium ), he retreated from academia to the comparatively more secure life of a freelance author and began writing what are certainly some of the best-informed and most imaginative alternate history tales ever. He won a Hugo in 1994 for his novella, "Down in the Bottomlands", and his combination of time travel with alternate history, The Guns of the South, made it to the best seller lists. More in line with his scholarly interests are Agent of Byzantium, in which the Roman Empire has survived its historical fall but is beginning to be infected by inevitable modernity, and the fantasy Videssos Cycle, a series of novels tracing the exploits of a Roman legion snatched into a world of magic.

Agent of Byzantium
Harry Turtledove
Amazon A book review by Danny Yee What if Justinian had succeeded in rebuilding the Roman Empire and Mohammed had been a Christian archbishop and saint? In the alternative 13th century world of Agent of Byzantium a powerful Byzantine empire faces a Franco-Saxon kingdom in the west, Persia in the east and nomads on the steppes. In a series of six short stories the hero, Basil Argyros, soldier and secret agent, confounds the enemies of the empire, in the process discovering smallpox innoculation and ferreting out the secrets of the telescope, gunpowder, distillation and the printing press. This is a bit implausible really, but the emphasis on technological discoveries is probably due to the intended audience (the stories were originally published in hard science fiction magazines) and it makes for a good story. Agent of Byzantium is hardly very deep, but it's a lot of fun as simple adventure even if you don't enjoy the alternative history. 14 August 1994
