Spending the Night in a Tower by the River Tu Fu A visible darkness grows up mountain paths,
I lodge by river gate high in a study,
Frail cloud on cliff edge passing the night,
The lovely moon topples amid the waves.
Steady, one after another, a line of cranes in flight;
Howling over the kill, wild dogs and wolves.
No sleep for me. I worry over battles.
I have no strength to right the universe.
Sitting Alone by Ching-t'ing Mountain Li Po The flocks of birds have flown high and away, A solitary cloud goes off calmly alone. We look at each other and never get bored Just me and Ching-t'ing Mountain By Beth Abigail Weindruch The two poems, "Sitting Alone by Ching-t'ing Mountain" by Li Po and "Spending the Night in a Tower by the River" by Tu Fu, both display intense feelings of the moment, although the emotions differ extremely. Both writers use specific adjectives to capture a specific mood. Li Po paints a picture of a serene, peaceful utopia, where

Gazing at the Sacred Peak
For all this, what is the mountain god like?
An unending green of lands north and south:
From ethereal beauty Creation distills
There, yin and yang split dusk and dawn.
Swelling clouds sweep by. Returning birds
Ruin my eyes vanishing. One day soon,
At the summit, the other mountains will be
Small enough to hold, all in a single glance.
Alone, Looking for Blossoms Along the River
The sorrow of riverside blossoms inexplicable,
I look up our southern neighbor. But my friend in wine
Gone ten days drinking. I find only an empty bed. A thick frenzy of blossoms shrouding the riverside, I stroll, listing dangerously, in full fear of spring. Poems, wine even this profusely driven, I endure. Arrangements for this old, white-haired man can wait. A deep river, two or three houses in bamboo quiet, And such goings on: red blossoms glaring with white! Among spring's vociferous glories, I too have my place:

Tu Fu (712-770 AD) Night Journey Thoughts
Bent grasses in slender breeze. Boat’s mast high in empty night. Starlight shining near the plain. Moon floating on river’s light. All this writing, but no name. Illness and years, without a place. Drifting, wandering, what am I? A white bird over earth and sky.
Spring in Ch’ang-an Fallen States still have hills and streams. Cities, in Spring, have leaves and grass. Though tears well at half-open flowers. Though parted birds rise with secret fears. War beacons shine through triple moons. Home news is worth more than gold. Grey hairs, tugged at every disaster, Thin on this head that’s too small for its cap.
Moon at Night in Ch’ang-an
North of here in the moonlight She too looks up in loneliness. I am sad for our little children, Too young to think of far off Ch’ang-an. Clouds of hair wet with jewelled mist. Cold light on arms of jade. When will we two stir the silk curtains While one moon shows the stain of tears? Note: Tu is in the occupied capital. The past glory is already distant in time. His wife and children are in Fu-chou in the north-east. Those who are parted are linked to each other through watching the same moon.
By the Waters of Wei
Grieving silently and ageing

Red Pine's translation of the Ch'ienchiashih is quite impressive. I've found too many translations from Chinese that are overdone, full of themselves; here is a volume of clear, elegant poetry. Even a beginning Chinese language student can follow along and understand the original text, his translation is so well constructed. And yet these 224 poems lose nothing of their poetic quality. The poems are presented with the Chinese facing the English, with biographical and relevant explanatory notes...

I am not giving the stars to the translation or the edition. This is the only book on Li Po I could find available a few months ago. I guess I was lucky enough to run into an old edition of Li Pos poetry at my University library years ago, and had been looking for a copy since then. Got this. Want more. THE SELECTED POEMS OF TU FU. Translated by David Hinton. 173 pp. New York : New Directions, 1989, and Reissued. Tu Fu (712-790) was one of Chinas greatest poets, and the present book, after a brief 9-page Introduction, gives us a comprehensive selection of his poems, arranged chronologically, annotated, and in adequate translations of varying degrees of success. Here is an example of Hintons style, the first four lines of an eight-line poem, selected at random from the poem Skies Clear at Dusk (and with my obliques added to indicate line breaks) : "Dusks failing flare breaks out. Clouds / Thin and drift - none return. Distant, / Bright, a rainbow drinks at the river. / Rain in the gorge falls - remnants scatter" (p.78).
