u Fu, A.D. 712-770, whom his countrymen called the God of Verse, was born in the province of Hu-Kuang, and this was his portrait from contemporaries: Of all poets Tu Fu is the first in craftsmanship. It is interesting to add that he was a painter as well, and the friend of painters, notably the soldier-artist, Kiang-Tu, to whom he dedicates a poem. Possibly it is to this faculty that he owes his superb technique. He seeks after simplicity and its effects as a diver seeks for sunken gold. In his poem called "The Little Rain", which I have (perhaps somewhat rashly) attempted, there is all the graciousness of fine rain falling upon sullen furrows, which charms the world into spring. "The Recruiting Sergeant" has the touch of grim desolation, which belongs inevitably to a country plundered of its men and swept with the ruinous winds of rebellion.
The Little Rain
Oh! she is good, the little rain! and well she knows our need
Who cometh in the time of spring to aid the sun-drawn seed;

by Daniel Sledge

The Tang poet Tu Fu is considered by many Chinese to be the most accomplished of the Chinese poets. In addition, his is an excellent example of the conflicts natural to the Literatus ideal. While he was well read in the important Confucian texts, he was unable upon his first attempts to succeed in the Confucian examinations. Although his instinctive response to this disappointment was to long for a hermetic lifestyle, devotion to the goal of attaining a post as an official initially deterred him from a more rustic and solitary existence (Davis 29).
Tu Fu was born in 712, during a time of political stability. He was the product of family with a tradition of official service in the Confucian bureaucracy (Davis 13). On his father's side, he was the descendent of Tu Yu, the author of an authoritative Confucian text (Davis 13). Tu Fu was aware of this ancestry, and thus aware of what he considered to be his place in the context of history. Tu Fu began writing poetry at an early age, and as a young man was considered by many to have great potential. After failing his examination at Chang-an in 736 (Davis 11), Tu Fu began a period of travel, athletic pursuits, and poetic expression. Much of his earlier poetry has been lost, but the ambivalence that he felt towards the conflicting social ideals of his time is a notable theme, as much of his poetry is somewhat autobiographical in nature.
A significant problem encountered in western interpretation and basic reading of Tu Fu's poetry is the difficulty presented by the necessity to translate. Unfortunately, Tu's poetry loses a great measure of subtlety and poetic effect when translated from the original Chinese. Still, the biographical and historical incidents recorded and reflected upon in Tu Fu's poetry have had lasting effects on Chinese culture and the Chinese worldview, and it is possible to imagine some of the poetic nature that is lost in translation of his poetry. In order to gain insight not only into High Tang culture, but also into the social and historical underpinnings of the Chinese societal tradition, it is important to read the poetry of Tu Fu.

TU FU

Frost and snow at the sky's edge clear into a crisp, cold night. At fifth watch, drums and bugles sound a piercing grief, while over Three Gorges, shadows of the Milky Way sway and rock. In the countryside, wild sobs resounded through homes after the destruction. Here and there, tribal songs of fishermen and woodcutters arise. Lying-Dragon and Leaping-Horse have disintegrated into yellow dust; let the news of all our affairs … be still and hushed. Lone Wild Goose
Alone, the wild goose refuses food and drink,
his calls searching for the flock.
Who feels compassion for that single shadow
vanishing in a thousand distant clouds?
You watch, even as it flies from sight,
its plaintive calls cutting through you.
The noisy crows ignore it: the bickering, squabbling multitudes. I Stand Alone A falcon hovers at the edge of the sky. Two gulls drift slowly up the river. Vulnerable while they ride the wind, they coast and glide with ease. Dew is heavy on the grass below, the spider’s web is ready. Heaven’s ways include the human: among a thousand sorrows, I stand alone. P’eng-ya Road I remember fleeing the rebels through dangerous northern canyons, the midnight moon shining bright on narrow P’eng-ya Road. So poor we went on foot, we were embarrassed meeting strangers. A few birds sang in the valleys

Teaching Tu Fu on the Night Shift Essays from Working Classrooms Abstracts: Teaching Tu Fu on the Night Shift (College English) Addresses the relationship between the canon of poetry and the student reader. ...At the point we allow others to decide for us what is good, at that point we begin to lose a vital sense of language as something personal, mysterious, transformative. And when we apply to poetry the kind of discrimination that academia encourages, we jeopardize the very source of that personal, mys terious, transformative quality... Discusses the discrepancies of salary and lifestyle between college educators and professionals in other walks of life. ...Faculty. Think about the word: an ability, a source, a means of perception. Our responsibility is not merely to produce a product—students, useful research; we have a responsibility to follow, with passion, our quirky obsessions, to live untrammeled intellectual lives, which validate our time, not our salaries... Books of Sand: A Review of Unpublished Manuscripts, One a Conceit of the Author Tells the story of several unpublished manuscripts to explore the relationship between quality and popularity in poetry. ...Maybe ours is such: a necessary darkness. Maybe living in Youngstown, we are figures in a dusk without which the belief in a poetry which emerges from a select cadre into the light of publication would disintegrate. Perhaps our role is to remind that every literature course ought to assign at least one book that is not a book. Every bookstore ought to feature empty shelves...
