About Tu Fu I met Tu Fu on a mountaintop in August when the sun was hot. Under the shade of his big straw hat his face was sad in the years since we last parted, he'd grown wan, exhausted. Introduction
Du Fu (c.712-c.770) was raised as a Confucian but failed to gain the government post he sought. He subsequently traveled throughout China, observing the conditions of the people and commenting on his impressions in poems. He was a friend of Li Po , and the Confucianism in his poetry sometimes complements the Taoism in Li Po’s. His conviviality also complemented that of Li Po. Du Fu was an outspoken critic of the bloodshed in border wars and in the rebellions that often followed them. The poem below on the pressing of peasantry into military service, and the one that follows it, illustrate his opposition to war. The poem on fireflies shows him reflecting on his own mortality, while the poem on the parrot can be seen as a protest against the way beauty is trapped and imprisoned.
The Chariots Go Forth to War
The chariots go forth to war, Rumbling, roaring as they go; The horses neigh and whinny loud

TU FU (712 - 70)
Tu Fu, unlike Li Po , got an official post fairly late in life (758), when the normal examination system had temporarily broken down during the rebellion of An Lu-shan. He met Li Po in 745, and was deeply impressed by the older poet in spite of, or perhaps because of, their very different personalities. He continued to write poems to, or about, Li for many years after. Tu was essentially serious, and his work, in contrast to Li Po's, commonly shows a greater interest in the condition of his times (he experienced great personal distress at the time of the rebellion). His emotional range seems greater than Li's and he is also a more intellectual poet. Of the two his immediate influence was greater.

It's also the starting point for one of the nicer journeys I've taken, a poetic exploration of the Silk Road. "The River Merchant's Wife: A Letter" is Ezra Pound's (rather liberal) translation of another Li Po masterpiece; it, too, deals with themes of love and distance and devotion: poem #70

TU FU

Vaga luz oro y plata. Manso
Zozobra, llanto, nadie.

TU-FU
Chinese Poet
Tu-Fu ranks together with his friend Li Tai-po as one of the greatest poets and social critics in Chinese history. Born into a scholarly family Tu Fu received a Confucian education but failed in the Imperial examination. As a result he spent much of his youth travelling, during which he met the famous poet Li Tai-po. While Li Tai-po was Taoist in spirit Tu Fu remained devoutly Confucian. Tu Fu was deeply moved by the sorrow of his troubled times. His poems speak of the sad fate of the people, and his deep hatred of war. www link :

http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~yangzw/dufu1.html
On a Moonlight Night Far off in Fu-chou she is watching the moonlights,
Watching it alone from the window of her chamber
For our boy and girl, poor little babes,
Are too young to know where the Capital is.
Her cloudy hair is sweet with mist,
Her jade-white shoulder is cold in the moon.
... When shall we lie again, with no more tears,
Watching this bright light on our screen?
A Spring View Though a country be sundered, hills and rivers endure;
And spring comes green again to trees and grasses
Where petals have been shed like tears And lonely birds have sung their grief. ... After the war-fires of three months, One message from home is worth a ton of gold. ... I stroke my white hair. It has grown too thin To hold the hairpins any more. A Long Climb In a sharp gale from the wide sky apes are whimpering, Birds are flying homeward over the clear lake and white sand, Leaves are dropping down like the spray of a waterfall, While I watch the long river always rolling on. I have come three thousand mile away. Sad now with atumn And with my hundred years of woe, I climb this height alone.
