    MARINA TSVETAYEVA ON PUSHKIN
    from the collection MY PUSHKIN
translated by Helen Szamuely THE POET AND THE TSAR (1)
    The nether world -
    the Tsars' hall.
    - Who is that unbending
    marble chap?
    So majestic
    in a golden mantle:
    the pitiful gendarme
of Pushkin's glory. He disparaged the author. He trimmed his work. The bestial butcher of the Polish land. Look more carefully. Do NOT forget: The singer's assassin: Tsar Nicholas the First. THE TSAR AND THE POET (2) Oh yes, the drum did sound before the troubled regiment when we buried our leader. The tsar's teeth provided the drum roll for the dead singer. Such an honour - no place for close friends. At his head and his feet, to the right and to the left - Atte-e-ention! Police chests and police mugs. How surprising - a supervised boy unto the last resting place. It really is something, something like: this honour - so honourable - too much so. And the people can see: contrary to gossip the ruler cares about the poet. What an honour, such an honour, a super- honour, yes, an honour - the devil's own honour.

From Poem of the End (Stanzas from Part 12)
    as a horse's mane
    in our eyes. Hills ahead
    We've passed the outskirts
    Now we're far from town.
    Rain insanely tears at us.
We stand and part from each other.
In three months, we hope for
few moments of sharing. Outside! We're nationless! That means we've passed the walls within. Life's a place where it's forbidden to live. Like the Hebrew quarter. Isn't it more worthy to become an eternal Jew? Anyone

Letters: Summer 1926 (New York Review Books Classics) > Customer Review #1: In the Company of Angels

Words have tremendous power, and reading the letters written from one person to another often helps us to know that person far more intimately than anythng else ever could. During the summer of 1926, three extraordinary poets (two Russian and one German) began a correxpondence of the highest order. These three extraordinary people were Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetayeva and Ranier Maria Rilke. Rilke, who is revered as a god by both Pasternak and Tsvetayeva, is seen by them as the very essence of poetry, itself. None of these three correspondents is having a good year: Pasternak is still living in Moscow, attempting to reconcile his life to the Bolshevik regime; Tsvetayeva has been exiled to France with her husband and children and is living in the direst financial straits, with each day presenting a new hurdle in the struggle to simply "get by;" Rilkes situation is perhaps the worst of all...he is dying of leukemia in Switzerland.

      To Mother
In the old Strauss waltz for the first time We had listened to your quiet call, Since then all the living things are alien And the knocking of the clock consoles. We, like you, are gladly greeting sunsets, And are drunk on nearness of the end. All, with which on better nights we're wealthy Is put in the hearts by your own hand. Bowing to a child's dreams with no tire. (Only crescent looked in them indeed Without you)! You have led your kids past Bitter lifetime of the thoughts and deeds. From the early age the sad one's close to us, Laughter bores and home we left behind.. Our ship not in good times left the harbor And it sails by will of every wind! Azure isle of childhood is paling, On the deck of ship we stand alone. It appears, oh mother, to your daughters You've left an inheritance of woe.
The street awakens. She looks, exhausted With the mute windows' sullen eyes, On sleepy faces, red from the cold, That with thoughts chase the stubborn sleep away. The blackened trees with rime are covered - With trace mysterious of the night's fun, In gleaming brocade sad ones are standing, Just like the dead the alive among. The gray coat mingles, trampled upon, The forage-cup with a wreathe, a bored look, And the red arms, pressed to the ears, And the black apron with the tied books. The street awakens. She looks, unpleasant With mute windows' sullen eyes, it would seem. To sleep, in a happy thought be forgotten, What life seems to us, this is a dream!
