Shawn, the main character of Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman, has no control over his body’s movements or functions. I really enjoyed reading this book and you will too. In this book, Shawn’s father won a Nobel Prize for a poem he wrote about life with his son’s condition. No one knows that Shawn can understand everything that happens. It’s like he’s stuck inside his own body. He ever figured out how to read one day while his sister was playing school. Then Shawn’s father started researching and reporting on a father who killed his terminal son to stop his suffering. He begins to get wrapped up in the idea. Even though he can’t tell anyone, Shawn starts to worry about his own safety. Soon Shawn’s brother and sister notice their father’s obsession and tell Shawn they will protect him. Shawn feels safer.

HarperTempest March 2002 $13.95 116p pbk ISBN: 0-06-447213-2 Shawn McDaniel suffers from Cerebral Palsy, and cannot walk, talk, communicate or do anything of his own free will. Stuck in Neutral is told from Shawn’s perspective, and gives us a glimpse into his mind: his ideas, thoughts and concerns and his belief that his father is trying to kill him. One of the best things about Stuck in Neutral is the way the author brings out the personality of Shawn through his thoughts about the outside world. Stuck in Neutral is very much a character driven story, which is the most distinguishable feature of the novel. However, i t is an uneventful novel, whereby the main character does not have anything happen to him except seizures. This cannot be helped in part since Shawn suffers from cerebral palsy, though you can’t help thinking that the story is a little one way. Shawn responds to the world through his thoughts, but no one seems to interact with him. he lack of events also results in little climax at the end of the novel which also proves to be somewhat disappointing as it fails to deliver the answers that the reader set out to discover. If you’re 13 to 15 years old, don’t care much for action, and like short, easy-to-read novels where the journey is more enjoyable than the destination
