Learning about the Net doesn't get any easier than in this addition to the 3-D Visual Series from IDG. With its full-color illustrations and extremely brief text, Internet and World Wide Web Simplified is perfect for beginners. It starts with an introduction to the Internet, which explains what the Net has to offer, who pays for it, how it got started, and how you can get connected. The book then moves on to discuss the World Wide Web, browsers, plug-ins, security issues, Java, ActiveX, and V...

Guide to Neuroimaging in Psychiatry

I expected a turgid read of a collection of abstracts from the various contributors. But actually its a pleasant read, the Russell et al chapter on the introduction of neuroimaging is sensational and should be required reading for under and post graduate courses.

Sample passage: While it may not make sense to characterize one kind of music as "better" than another, there does seem to be a sense in which some kinds of music are more "natural." That is, they seem to fit some basic sense of acoustic fitness that is shared by all human beings, and, it now seems, some higher animals as well. And paramount among these forms of music is the Western "classical" tradition, especially the baroque and classical periods. Best

Dave Trowbridge slams Rush Limbaugh's Fort Marcy Park comment. He'd be right to do so, except what doesn't get included with a bare quote is that, according to those who were listening, Rush was laughing throughout, and it was obviously a joke. I'd call it a joke in bad taste. (I actually sent an e-mail to Rush saying he was way out-of-line. I should have guessed it was a joke. Anyone who actually listens to Rush, as I do occasionally, knows he's not into conspiracy theories.) But now it will circulate endlessly, and give the close-minded an excuse to stay close-minded. (Much as if I used some loony comment from the DU to characterize people on the left, and ignore what they have to say.) TrackBack
Comments That almost makes it worse, John. To understand why I think so, cast your mind back to your school days. Do you remember the kind of kid who used to pull that sort of stunt? You know, the wannabe bully, surrounded by his clique of sycophants, who'd make a cruel or cutting remark, and, when called on it, say "I was only kidding. Can't you take a joke?" Do you remember what you thought of those kids? I remember how I felt. I despised them as sneaks and cowards. And I still do.

DAVE TROWBRIDGE WONDERS if Osama bin Laden has pulled a Hari Seldon: What if bin Laden recorded a series of "gloats" about various operations (planned, desired, or even merely likely) that, in the event of his death, could be hacked together to give the impression that he was still alive? Certainly the rhetoric wouldn't change, just the names of the countries and the types of operations, both of which are not that large a set of possibilities. It seems to me that with a little imagination and not much more time expended, a set of recordings could have been produced that could keep Osama alive for years beyond his actual death, rendering him, in effect, undefeatable. This wouldn't surprise me at all. UPDATE: This is old news to the blogosphere, but if you missed it earlier, here's a story on the peculiar bin Laden / Asimov link. posted at 10:12 PM by Glenn Reynolds If you've got a modem, I've got an opinion!

News/General Sod-Busters take team title at Third Annual Northwest Old Timers Wrestling Tournament The Third Annual Northwest Old Timers Tournament, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Wrestling Boosters, was held on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Despite blizzard conditions, the tournament drew 71 wrestlers from across the state. Wrestlers competed in 13 separate weight classes ranging in weight from 145 pounds to 275 pounds. For the first time, the tournament included separate brackets for those wrestlers over the age of 27, who more closely fit the category of "old-timer". "In the past, we tried to group the older wrestlers on one side of the bracket", commented tournament organizer Tom Trowbridge, "but some of the older wrestlers resented having to compete against people so much younger. The difficulty is that it makes it difficult to fill out the brackets. Because of the weather this year, it was much more difficult." Five of the weight classes featured eight-man brackets, with the remaining wrestlers grouped in two to six-man brackets. This year, the team honors went to the Sod-Busters. The team consisted of Brent Heinz (145 lbs), Jim Kath (155 lbs), Jeff Bullerman (190 lbs), Jeremy Lang (210 lbs) and Jeff Barrett (275 lbs). Heinz and Lang claimed individual titles, leading the Sod-Busters to a total of 75.5 points to place first out of ten teams. Second place went to the Northern Alliance.

    A festival city
MAY 21 - JUNE 6, BATH: Bath is known as a festival city. Thousands of visitors flock to hear world class music at the most famous of these the celebrated Bath International Music Festival, held from May 21-June 6 this year. The event begins in spectacular fashion with a free opening night fireworks display in Royal Victoria Park, the Royal Crescent forming an elegant backdrop. A programme of classical, jazz and contemporary music performed by international artists is combined with walks, talks, comedy, contemporary art exhibitions and a hot air balloon fiesta. Many of the events take place within Bath's historic buildings or simply in the street. The accompanying fringe festival (May 28-June 13) now has a firm footing and offers around 150 events.
