Speaker Biography
Calvin Trillin
Calvin Trillin has been acclaimed in fields of writing that are remarkably diverse. As someone who has published solidly reported pieces in The New Yorker for thirty years, he has been called "perhaps the finest reporter in America". His antic commentary on the American scene- which now appears weekly in Time magazine, and his books chronicling his adventures as a "happy eater" have earned him renown as "a classic American humorist". His best-selling book Remembering Denny was hailed as "an elegiac, disturbing and altogether brilliant memoir". Trillin began his career as a writer for Time and then became a staff writer for The New Yorker, and then a columnist for The Nation. There he wrote what USA Today called "simply the funniest regular column in journalism". That column became syndicated from 1986 through 1995. In 1996, he returned to Time as a weekly columnist. To date the column has been collected in five books. His most recent book, Messages From My Father, which was published in 1996 as has become a best-seller. This is his 19th book. So far, his work has included two comic novels, a collection of short stories, a travel book, an account of desegregation at The University of Georgia, family memoirs, and three antic books on eating - American Fried, Alice- Lets Eat, and Third Helpings, - which have been compiled into a single volume called "The Tummy Trilogy"

Having published solidly reported pieces in The New Yorker for more than twenty years, Trillin has been called "perhaps the finest reporter in America." His antic commentary on the American scene has earned him renown as " a classic American humorist." His books chronicling his adventures as a "happy eater" caused Business Week to say, "Trillin is to food writing what Chaplin was to film acting." In whatever sort of writing he does, Trillin has an unadorned point of view that is deeply rooted in a Midwestern upbringing. He was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and he has never stopped writing about his hometown.

Here Calvin Trillin defends Sicilian drivers from the charge of unpredictability ("they can be counted on to pass") and elucidates the mysteris of taureaux piscine ("if you and the bull are in the pool at the same time, you win") and wonders at mealtime in the Caribbean why there are no Italian West IndiesSanto Prosciutto, I.W.I. Merle Rubin, The Christian Science Monitor "Utterly delightful…the sophisticated traveler masquerading as innocent abroad." Travels with Sukey There were a lot of roadside zoosplaces that began advertising miles in advance that they offered a unique opportunity to see an albino raccoon or a two-headed goat or the world's smallest sheep dog. I could never understand why my father wasn't willing to stop at every single roadside zoo in the West. Even now I can't explain it. I realize, of course, that the zoos were come-ons for filling stations or maybe even flimflam dice games, but I still can't imagine passing up an opportunity to see an albino raccoon. Also, the stops were about the only time I could concentrate on what I was supposed to be seeing, relieved temporarily from the tension of maintaining a full border alert in the back seat.

Deadline Poet: My Life as a Doggerelist
by Calvin Trillin
n 1990, columnist Calvin Trillin happened upon an unlikely inspiration for poetry the entertainingly arrogant and euphoniously named John Sununu. Trillin published a poem entitled "If You Knew What Sununu," and found himself launched as a weekly gadfly in verse for The Nation a deadline poet. On weekly deadline, he found his inspiration broadening to include such figures as Saddam Hussein and Clarence Thomas and Ross Perot and Madonna and the Philadelphia Phillies. When George Bush went back to Texas ("We wish you well. Just take your ease, /And never order Japanese"), Trillin turned to his successor Bill ("I got the movin' to the middle 'cause it's slip'ry on the edges blues") Clinton. Here, in prose and poetry, Trillin tells how he became a deadline poet and offers a delightfully pungent history of three years of American life. Read that first poem about John Sununu that set Trillin's rhymin' wheels in motion, and a few of his pieces on some of our most recent First Ladies.

In 1963 he became a staff writer for The New Yorker . From 1967 to 1982, he produced a highly praised series of articles for The New Yorker called U.S. Journal 3,000-word pieces every three weeks from somewhere in the United States, on subjects that ranged from the murder of a farmer's wife in Iowa to the author's effort to write the definitive history of a Louisiana restaurant called Didee's "or to eat an awful lot of baked duck and dirty rice trying." Some of the murder stories from that series were published in 1984 as Killings, a book that was described by William Geist in the New York Times Book Review as "that rarity, reportage as art."

Calvin Trillin talks with Don Swaim in this 1983 interview. Trillin begins this first interview by explaining the "horror of being old enough to know people in charge of things." The pair go on to talk about Trillin's life, how he works and where he writes. Trillin worked as a reporter for Time magazine, as a staff writer for The New Yorker ,and knows most of the ins and outs of East Coast cuisine. Listen to the Calvin Trillin interview with Don Swaim, 1983
(36 min. 54 sec.) In a second interview, Trillin changes subjects and talks with Don Swaim about his career as a novelist outside of the realm of journalism and cuisine. As a journalist, he found himself naturally drawn to stories of crime and murder. It is also true that people today have a fixation on violence in our society. They also discuss the reasons why today's culture has embraced and almost nurtured the amount of violence in our lives, whether it is on the street or on TV. The price of purity is purists. As far as I'm concerned, "whom" is a word that was invented to make everyone sound like a butler. Even today, well-brought-up English girls are taught by their mothers to boil all veggies for at least a month and a half, just in case one of the dinner guests turns up without his teeth. Confessions of a Family Man
    by Mark Bazer
Interviewing Calvin Trillin is an experience both fun and frustrating. The fun part is that he's an old pro. No matter the question, he can instantly reply with a playful homemade expression or anecdote from a past column or book, or a new one you can tell he's been dying to try out. Ask him about the recent rash of tell-all memoirs and he'll respond that he doesn't have to worry about his daughters writing one because, when they were little, he made them sign a nondisclosure agreement. Ask him why he sticks to the warm and affectionate (but still hilarious) in his latest book, Family Man (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 184 pages, $20), and he'll tell you first, because he's written the truth, and second, because of his Dostoyevsky test. Simply, if you can't write as well as Dostoyevsky, which he learned "early on" he couldn't, then you have no right to embarrass your family. The frustrating part is choosing what you want to ask this writer who's done it all. For years Trillin was a roving reporter for the New Yorker , writing the "U.S. Journal" pieces. He's written a humor column for the

Journalist, humorist, and devoted diner, Calvin Trillin has been sharing his insights with appreciative readers for almost forty years. Although he is best known for his gentle but biting satire, Trillin's skilled work as serious observer of contemporary life is some of the finest reporting being done today. Born and raised in Kansas City, Trillin exudes a self-deprecating wit that can perhaps be traced to his parents' conviction that he was a "special case" and an imposing father who often uttered wry comments like, "haven't had so much fun since the hogs ate my little sister." Trillin's journalism career began as a "floater" at Time magazine where he plotted to be relieved of writing religious stories by inserting the word "alleged" before such biblical events as the parting of the Red Sea and the crucifixion. His long association with The New Yorker began with his U.S. Journal articles, compiled as he traversed the country, scouring for obscure tales and developing his palate for regional delicacies. Along with his numerous columns and contributions of pithy verse to
