  • "Tepper Isn't Going Out" by Calvin Trillin A mild-mannered New Yorker becomes a connoisseur of parking spots and winds up the center of a media circus and the target a Giuliani-esque mayor. By Suzy Hansen "Tepper Isn't Going Out" is a typical New York story. Murray Tepper, an average small-business owner, gentle husband and loving father, spends his nights casing Manhattan neighborhoods for the perfect parking spot. It doesn't matter that he owns a space in a parking garage or that his wife and friends consider his behavior worrisome or that other angry drivers, truly desperate for a space near the theater, are reaming him out and honking wildly. Tepper dismisses them with a wave or a nod and returns to his newspaper simply because it's a damn good spot, and he found it, and, well, the sign says he can stay. That's the premise of Calvin Trillin's warmhearted and completely hilarious new book. Tepper is a likable guy, if only because he's reassuringly uncomplicated. "There were nights when he could almost imagine himself with a large tattoo on his arm that said 'Born to Park,'" Trillin writes. Of all the big dreams in the big city, competitive parking has to be one of the sweetest.

Why has it taken so long for literature to produce a great novel about parking in New York City? You can't talk five minutes to a New Yorker without the subject of parking coming up. Of the approximately six gazillion published fictions set in New York, wouldn't you figure there'd have been at least one canonical work before now? "There may be a long tradition in Serbo-Croatia where every young writer takes his crack at a parking novel," Calvin Trillin acknowledges, "but I don't think so. In English, at least, we think it's the first." A staff writer at The New Yorker since 1963 — also a long-time contributor to The Nation and Time — Trillin has published twenty-one books in all. His nonfiction includes a series of books about food (

Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us BERKELEY - "Messages From My Father" ( Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $18) by the prolific and very funny Calvin Trillin is the story of a stubborn man written by an equally stubborn man, a man who loved his father very much. Trillin came to town last week to read from his new book. He also answered questions from a standing-room-only audience. "What's it like working at the new New Yorker?" someone asked. "Oh, I never heard that question before," said Trillin. "Well, I like some aspects of it and not others. The stories in the magazine are much shorter now for one thing and I've always written short." That's true. "Messages From My Father" is only 117 pages long. Trillin continued. "People often write to me because I've been there (at the New Yorker) for so long." Trillin described several letter-writers being utterly shocked when the magazine ran a photo of a bare-breasted actress. Here's a typical Trillin response: "My only defense was - they were small breasts."

Calvin Trillin, who pens a weekly column for Time magazine, is acclaimed in remarkably diverse fields of writing. He has written for The New Yorker for more than 20 years and has been called "perhaps the finest reporter in America." His antic commentary on the American scene has earned him the title of "a classic American humorist."
His three books on eating, which he sometimes refers to as "the tummy trilogy," also concentrate on America, and led Craig Claiborne of The New York Times to call him "the Walt Whitman of American eats."
