if weekly columnists are inevitably forced to cannibalize their personal lives, Calvin Trillin put off the inevitable for quite a while. After a disgruntled stint writing for Time magazine where he vainly attempted to get out of religion stories by inserting the word "alleged" before such miraculous events as the crucifixion and the parting of the Red Sea the young journalist landed a staff writer job at The New Yorker. For 15 years he traveled the country, ferreting out odd stories in out-of-the-way places and developing his palate for such delicacies as chicken-fried steak and barbequed backribs, along with a reputation as one of the first champions of American regional cuisine. His column in The Nation (for which he was famously underpaid "in the high two figures" by the publisher, a man he calls Victor "Sticky Fingers" Navasky) became syndicated in 1986, and he has since returned in triumph (and perhaps gloating) as a columnist for Time. The Nation continues to publish his satirical poetry, which analyzes the week's news in rhymed couplets which can only be described as doggerel an acquired taste. But despite publishing 16 books (including two novels and a volume of short stories), Trillin didn't debut on the bestseller list until 1993, with "Remembering Denny." He is still surprised by the success of this "sad" book, a memoir about a college friend who appeared to be the most golden and promising of their Yale class and who wound up committing suicide in the early '90s. While puzzling out the reasons for Denny's lack of faith in himself, Trillin kept returning, by comparison, to his own childhood and how his parents conveyed to him their subtle, but rock-solid, conviction that he was "a special case." These ruminations inspired a memoir about his father, published as an essay in The New Yorker and now appearing in expanded form as his new book, "Messages From My Father."

About Us

One of the most dynamic speakers on the circuit today is newspaper columnist, author and commentator, Calvin Trillin. Full of fresh, wry observations delivered in a style all his own, Trillin allows us to see the world around us in refreshing ways.
Trillin was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and has never stopped writing about his hometown. His father, who ran a well-known restaurant there, was the subject of Trillin's wonderful family memoir: Messages from my Father (1996). His latest book is Family Man (1998), full of stories and "advise" in his delightful style. "Getting advice on the best way to bring up children is like getting advice on the best way to breathe; sooner or later, you're probably going to forget it and go back to your regular old in-and-out."

LETTER FROM BERKELEY
By Calvin Trillin
Published originally in The New Yorker, March 13, 1965 March 3, 1965 ONE A student stopped at the Slate table and, indicating a sign that asked for contributions to the bail fund for the Ad Hoc Committee demonstrators, asked the Slate representative, "Did you hear about the DuBois Club pulling out of the Ad Hoc Committee?" "That's not what happened at all," the Slate representative replied. "The Ad Hoc Committee broke up. They're having a press conference at one o'clock, and Mike Myerson's going to explain it." "Do you expect me to believe any thing in the press?" the student asked. "It's their press conference," said the Slate man. "Mike Myerson is the president of the Ad Hoc Committee." "That doesn't make any difference," said the student, and wandered off. "No, no, no! " the young man exclaimed. "The thing to do now is to picket the grocery stores. Then we sit in at the factories." "Does this money go for political activity ? " a prospective customer asked while I was standing at Rosenfeld's table.

Calvin Trillin's family isn't necessarily a functional family, it's more of a muddle-through family. In his new book Family Man , Trillin recounts raising his family and splitting his time between New York City and Nova Scotia, where Trillin still spends his summers. Listen in as Michael and Calvin contemplate their retirement pastimes and the necessity of a good dental plan for professional writers. And, if a complete lack of stimulation is what you're looking for, head to Nova Scotia. Calvin recommends it. Calvin Trillin's book, Family Man is available from Amazon.com. Newly released: FEEDING A YEN: SAVORING LOCAL SPECIALTIES FROM KANSAS CITY TO CUZCO. Calvin Trillin is the ideal speaker. Full of fresh, wry observations delivered in his ironic hilarious style (which we can frequently enjoy with his guest appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "Late Night with David Letterman"), he makes us see our culture in whole new ways. Trillin knows where all the old chicken a la king has gone: stored in silos in Kansas right next to the ones filled with old Nehru jackets. He personally has revised the mottoes that appear on state automobile license plates: Nebraska, for example is "a long way across," and Arkansas on his first try was a little verbose: "Not As Bad As You Might Imagine." And his zest for food, especially Chinese food, is legendary. He has been hailed as a "classic American humorist." In whatever sort of writing and speaking he does, he has an unadorned point of view that is deeply rooted in a Midwestern upbringing. He was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and he has never stopped writing about his hometown. His father, who ran a well known restaurant there, was the subject of Trillin's wonderful family memoir: MESSAGES FROM MY FATHER (1996). His latest book is FAMILY MAN (1998), full of stories and "advise" in that Trillin way. "Getting advice on the best way to bring up children is like getting advice on the best way to breathe; sooner or later, you're probably going to forget it and go back to your regular old in-and-out."

"Travels With Alice" still better than the Grand Tour
Feb. 11, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us I have one of those 1996 calendars that features a different book and sometimes several books for every day of the year. Today's entry features a book I've read and loved and I was happy to use this as an excuse to reread "Travels With Alice" (1989) by Calvin Trillin (Even though I promised I wouldn't write about cats anymore this year I do think readers will be interested in knowing that I once had an orange cat who I named Alice in homage to Trillin's wife. Alice ran away, something I don't think Trillin's wife has done.) "Travels With Alice" is nominally a travel book but it's really about Trillin's favorite pastime, which is eating. He has lots to say about food in these 15 essays. Some of his comments are acerbic ("Anyone who is under the impression that an ancient culture guarantees a great cuisine has never tasted Navajo fry-bread") but in the main he's a big fan. When it comes to eating new and exotic foods, his daughters, Abigail and Sarah, bring him back to earth. Their favorite gourmet meal is grilled chicken and French fries. His wife's favorite meal, at least while she's in Italy, is gelato. In an effort to broaden his daughters' education, Trillin planned a family vacation some years ago in the South of France. This was not going to be the Grand Tour of Europe, Trillin decided. No visits to seven countries in seven weeks, counting off trips to churches and museums like dreary tasks accomplished. Trillin had seen too many "children who sat in formal hotel dining rooms doodling on the tablecloth with their butter knives, looking as if they were wondering whether there was any reason to hold out hope that they might be spared the second of tomorrow's scheduled cathedrals by a sudden downpour or perhaps a nuclear attack."
