After Schiller's 'A Maiden from Afar'
By the filling station on La Cienaga a burger joint
somehow survives. This Sunday morning
a pink Thunderbird sags at the kerb,
and an old Studebaker, paint flaking. Suzy got a job waitressing there, she doesn't quite
remember how or when. She turns up for work
just as the first bus trundles by, shifting gears
at the corner, the double diesel's throaty roar
making the plate glass tremble and glitter. She didn't come from around there - nobody did.
'I left the Midwest - don't ask me when,'
she said once. This morning she gets the key
and goes to the john. The empty sky has that pale hazy look that means a hot day. I like it when she stops to talk awhile. She brings a second cup of coffee, and

October 27 - November 2, 2003
Ern Malley, the Halloween Parade and quite a few book parties: Australian poet and Jacket magazine editor John Tranter visits New York. "Australia’s most celebrated military engagement, Gallipoli, was a bitter defeat; our most widely-known poet was a cruel and reactionary fabrication. What does that say about Australia?" I had spent a week in Britain while my wife Lyn, a literary agent, was attending the Frankfurt Book Fair. We met up in Paris for two weeks’ holiday, and then went to New York (my seventeenth visit) for ten days of meetings before we returned to Sydney. Monday, October 27

John Tranter: John Tranter is a leading contemporary poet. He has worked mainly in publishing, teaching and radio production, and has travelled widely, lecturing and reading his work in more than fifty venues in Europe, the USA and Australia. He has lived at various times in Melbourne, London, Singapore, Brisbane, Florida and San Francisco, and now lives in Sydney where he is a company director.
Late Night Radio (Polygon, Edinburgh, 1998), Different Hands , a group of seven fiction pieces (Salt Publications, Cambridge, 1998), The Floor of Heaven , a book-length sequence of four interlinked verse narratives (Arc, UK, 2001), Heart Print (Salt Publications, Cambridge, 2001) and Borrowed Voices
About Studio Moon The poems in Studio Moon were written over the last fifteen years, and cover a wide range of styles and approaches: poems that are answers to other poets' work, sometimes wrenched out of context (a version of Schiller’s “A Maiden from Afar,” for example, is set in a hamburger joint in Los Angeles), borrowings from Matthew Arnold and Barbara Guest, an ode, a three-page poem of sapphic stanzas, a computer-based pastiche, two deeply-felt elegies, two sestinas, four haibun, eight pantoums, and dozens of others, all imbued with Tranter's trademark blend of wit, style and feeling.

John Tranter The Left Hand of Capitalism
Jacket is a 100- to 200-page full-color illustrated quarterly literary magazine distributed to every town, city and country in the world via the Internet and given away for free. Its publisher, Australian poet John Tranter, muses on the contradictions of the brave new electronic world. The cute little feller is called Jacket Jacket might consist of a few minutes worth of browsing, say looking through an interview and a few book reviews in Issue # 4, or a whole evening spent reading through a number of issues. Many of my readers come back often for a regular literary hit; a few land there by accident (scanning the Internet for something cute in dinner jackets, perhaps) and leave immediately, never to return. Jacket In fact I've been involved in editing and publishing poetry books and magazines for over thirty years, on and off. That was in the Age of Print: now, most of what I do ends up on the Internet. The Way We Were: Most of the poetry magazines that were around when I began writing in the early 1960s were printed using metal type and stereo plates on large and costly rotary printing machines weighing a couple of tonnes. In effect we were still in the age of Johannes Gutenberg, who invented moveable metal type over five hundred years ago. The processes were the same: all we had added was a degree of mechanisation.
