The Left Hand of Capitalism
Jacket is a quarterly literary magazine distributed to every town, city and country in the world via the Internet and given away free. Its publisher is the poet John Tranter. Here he muses on the contradictions of the brave new electronic world.
I think they're right when they say that middle-aged men shouldn't have children: they're too old to manage the sleepless nights and the effluent disposal problems. But here I am, well over fifty, father to a demanding baby who turned one a few months ago.
The cute little fellow is called Jacket magazine, and I'm as proud as any dad. The other day, the counter on the front page ticked over to 43,000.
That tells me that over forty thousand separate visits have been made to the magazine's Web site on the Internet ( http://www.jacket.zip.com.au/welcome.html

THE BOOKSMITH READER Three Poems By John Tranter
STORM OVER SYDNEY Blustering over the Harbour, brilliant rain
slaps and blathers at the rusty Bridge.
I dodge for cover as the sky turns green.
Cars wobble and skid on William Street,
hot with mechanical rage. Lightning strikes twice: a blinding white
crack! and the echo whacks the concrete.
I fossick and dawdle in the supermarket aisles
safely underground, among the paper plates
and the jars of honey.
The thunder has trundled a thousand miles and boiled the Pacific black to bother us all, and it's dull and sick from its long journey. Now I'm trying to wheel a crook trolley from the shopping mall: the chrome's rusty, and a bent wheel clanks. It's the season of ruby cellophane and holly; the gutters are chock-full of summer hail fresh-frozen and smashed into chunks. At the café I doze in a corner, read the messages and the mail, and unwrap the book I've bought. It's old, old: the writer's fervour whispering down the years

Invitation to America
after Baudelaire
It's a day for daydreaming: rain
choking the gutters, wind whistling at the window.
Put down that coffee for a minute
and think about it – a ménage à deux
at the other end of the planet, floating on a culture
with a blank mind, or rather, surfing
on the waves of fashion, asleep on the wing,
splashed by each passing trend. The way the sun lifts up from the backdrop
so enthusiastically and lights up the windblown
clouds from behind, it's a knockout,
a patchwork canopy of blue and yellow. The storekeepers, the cops, the culture vultures remind me of you – deliquescent con-artist, blinking and lying through the convenient tears. Like a paint job on a new convertible the talk is brilliant and skin-deep. No history – who needs it? The furniture

N DECIDING to start an electronic literary magazine three years ago, Australian poet John Tranter bypassed the most obvious obstacle: money. Jacket , his quarterly e-zine of poetry, interviews, reviews, photographs, and articles, is full-color, has hundreds of pages and graphics, is available 24 hours a day, and commands a global readership on an annual budget of about 1,000 Australian dollars (approximately $570 U.S.). And it's free to its readers, providing they can access the Internet. It doesn't need an advertising budget, because like most Internet sites, Jacket thrives on word of mouth, and in the short time since its debut, the number of hits to its site has grown exponentially. Tranter is by turns publisher, editor, photographer, designer, and writer of Jacket (he jokes that he works with a staff of five: John Tranter, John Tranter, John Tranter, John Tranter, and John Tranter). He's an internationally recognized poet who grew up on a farm on the southeast coast of Australia, a place that he says provided the early training for his newfound prowess in HTML—what he calls the art of tinkering with machinery. He lives in Sydney with his wife, Lyn, with whom he travels the world and has raised two children, and for whom he works at her Sydney-based agency, Australian Literary Management. He has written 10 books of poetry, worked in radio, in typesetting, as a janitor, and as an editor, but his current interest is

The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Sunbathing on deck's the done thing,
but it makes the Brylcreem run
and stain the collar of your poplin
beach shirt. Palm trees drift by
as though your sins had turned vegetable
and semaphore. Sins of the laboratory, I mean,
not the confessional ... yes, the engine room
looks suitable, and through the porthole
a wise old man waiting patiently
in the wavering water — that's no priest!
Captain! But the Captain's a gutless foreigner, drinks gin, and never shaves. You pity the girl in the bathing suit — she may be a palæontologist, but sure as eggs she's going to get a terrible fright. And the ethnic extras, they have to die on our journey towards the knowledge that shimmers behind the South American façade. The priest turns his scaly back: that creature, rising like a new disease from the gene pool

Interviewed by John Tranter
New York City, May 1988
John Tranter: [ brief introduction ] John Tranter: ... I asked John Ashbery how he came to publish Some Trees , his first book, in 1956. John Ashbery:
I was going to mention The Tennis Court Oath , which was the second book you published. I think it interested a lot of readers because it was so hard to read. Would you like to talk about... (laughs) ... about how you came to write that... It antagonised a lot of readers.
Beryl of the Biplane . Ah... and the only idea, if there is one, in the poem, is that this poem contains a lot of things that can be found in Europe. But of course they can also be found anywhere else.
The Tennis Court Oath I was wondering if the fact that you were away from America and away from the magazines and reviewers and friends and so on, whether that may have had something to do with the fact that you felt you could go right out on a limb. What did the reviewers say about the book?
New York magazine, reviewed it for the Hudson Review A very unkind remark.
