    Summer of my Amazing Luck
    Miriam Toews
Turnstone Press,192 pp. "A most moving and heartening book" was the verdict of William Golding on The Shorn Lamb by John Stroud. That work dealt with children either abandoned or for other reasons "in care" in England a generation ago. "The reader is not once asked to shed ineffective tears: their melodramatic misfortunes speak too plainly for themselves." Much the same can be said of Summer of My Amazing Luck, which details life in public housing in Winnipeg as experienced by a group of single mothers. In the aptly nicknamed "Half-a-Life" housing complex, struggling in poverty, attempting to nurture a child, 18-year-old Lucy recounts - in a simplistic, often repetitive voice - her day-to-day interaction with her friend Lish, assorted children, single mothers and the myriad other colorful characters that render their lives both poignant and ludicrous. Allan King, the American humorist, postulated that the best comedy arises from the tribulations of the poor, coping with harshness and squalor. This book is a journey into a world where characters are always aware that "one bus fare can get you a box of Kraft Dinner or a litre of milk" and where overworked social services staff offer gratuitous advice such as, "If your lover won't give you his name and address, get his car licence!" It has become fashionable to blame the poor for their own misfortune. There are those that suggest that some naive young women have babies in order to be eligible for more welfare. The odd case of such silliness may exist, but why should many single mothers, whose only "crime" may be an naive mistake with a man, be "sentenced" to a life of poverty on the fringes of existence? Toews chronicles the culture and surprisingly rich lives of this group. Here is sadness with a smiling face, a gently mocking judgement on one failure of our "just" society.
