Tocqueville, Alexis de Democracy in America . Edited and translated by Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. With an Introduction by Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. 722 p. 2000 Cloth $35.00 0-226-80532-8 Fall 2000
Paper $20.00 0-226-80536-0 Spring 2002 When it was first published last year, Harvey Mansfield and Delba Winthrop's new translation of Democracy in America was lauded in all quarters as the finest and most definitive edition of Tocqueville's classic thus farcomplete with the most faithful and readable translation to date, impeccable annotations of unfamiliar references, and a masterful introduction placing the work and its author in the broader contexts of political philosophy and statesmanship. Mansfield and Winthrop's astonishing efforts have not only captured the elegance, subtlety, and profundity of Tocqueville's original, but also give us some sense of how very essential this masterpiece continues to be. "[T]he best edition of the best book on America. . . . What we need, here at the beginning of the century, is a fresh examinationone that begins from Tocqueville's own concerns and not from our desire to use him for our political battles. Mansfield and Winthrop . . . have contributed immeasurably to that task by providing hundreds of notes identifying events, allusions, and names that are no longer familiar, and by providing an accurate and readable translation of

Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume II Notes on the French Revolution and Napoleon Cloth $45.00sp 0-226-80533-6 Fall 2001 With his monumental work The Old Regime and the Revolution , Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)-best known for his classic Democracy in America envisioned a multivolume philosophic study of the origins of modern France that would examine the implications of French history on the nature and development of democratic society. Volume 1, which covered the eighteenth-century background to the Revolution, was published to great acclaim in 1856. On the continuation of this project, he wrote: "When this Revolution has finished its work, [this volume] will show what that work really was, and what the new society which has come from that violent labor is, what the Revolution has taken away and what it has preserved from that old regime against which it was directed." Tocqueville died in the midst of this work. Here in volume 2in clear, up-to-date Englishis all that he had completed, including the chapters he started for a work on Napoleon, notes and analyses he made in the course of researching and writing the first volume, and his notes on his preparation for his continuation. Based on the new French edition of

French social theorist and politician; the outstanding classical interpreter of religion's role in modern American democracy and prerevolutionary France. The son of an aristocratic and monarchist family, Tocqueville's travels in America, England, and Ireland led him to a reformist political stance in support of democratic institutions. Before traveling to America and after experiencing the social chaos and despotism in early-nineteenth-century France, Tocqueville suspected that democracy led inevitably to "a debased taste for equality, which leads the weak to want to drag the strong down to their level and which induces men to prefer equality in servitude to inequality in freedom" (1969 [1835-1840]: 49). He feared that this servile egalitarianism would lead to despotism by leaving people defenseless against public opinion. Yet Tocqueville cautioned that the American self-reliance also could lead people to pursue only their own private interests, and he coined a new term

Biographical Sketch of Alexis de Tocqueville
Alexis de Toqueville (1805-1859) was born in Verneuil, near Paris, during the reign of Napoleon I. Through his father, Herve de Tocqueville, Alexis is descended from Clerel de Tocqueville, who fought with the Normans under William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1088 A.D. Herve de Tocqueville was a prefect during the Restoration at Angers, Beauvais, Dijon, Metz, Amiens, and Versailles. Alexis de Tocqueville’s mother, Louise, daughter of Louis le Peletier de Rosanbo, is the granddaughter of Lamoignon de Malesherbes, the noble who cautioned Louis XVI against absolutism and who was executed after his spirited defense of Louis XVI to the revolutionary tribunal. According to Alexis de Tocqueville, his great grandfather "defended the people before the King and the King before the people"; he added, "His is a double example which I have never forgotten, and shall never forget" (from Mdme. de Stael's Reflections on the French Revolution [1818], quoted in Larry Siedentop

Compassion
I n democratic ages men rarely sacrifice themselves for another, but they show a general compassion for all the human race. One never sees them inflict pointless suffering, and they are glad to relieve the sorrows of others when they can do so without much trouble to themselves. They are not disinterested, but they are gentle.
Faith
D espotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. How is it possible that society should escape destruction if the moral tie is not strengthened in proportion as the political tie is relaxed? And what can be done with a people who are their own masters if they are not submissive to the Deity?
Inequality
H owever energetically society in general may strive to make all the citizens equal and alike, the personal pride of each individual will always make him try to escape from the common level, and he will form some inequality somewhere to his own profit.
Opportunity
B orn often under another sky, placed in the middle of an always moving scene, himself driven by the irresistible torrent which draws all about him, the American has no time to tie himself to anything, he grows accustomed only to change, and ends by regarding it as the natural state of man. He feels the need of it, more he loves it; for the instability; instead of meaning disaster to him, seems to give birth only to miracles all about him.

71. With Alexis De Tocqueville In Green Bay
With alexis de tocqueville in Green Bay. by. Jerrold Rodesch. 200201. 6. alexis de tocqueville, Journey to America, ed. JP Mayer, trans.

With Alexis de Tocqueville in Green Bay by Jerrold Rodesch (Reprinted with Permission from Voyageur, Historical review of Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin , Summer 1986.) Democracy in America, his master work, was based on extensive travels in this country in 1831-32, including a visit to Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was also based on his subtle theories about "a democratic state of society," toward which he saw historical development moving and of which he found the United States the most fully realized instance. This country was at once a cautionary example and the most important field of research for those who wished to know the outlines of the future. Tocqueville analyzed the American legal and political systems and the social and cultural life of a democratic people. By democracy he meant a condition of political and social equality, in contrast to the still hierarchical system of privileged orders of traditional Europe. Democracy in America combines detailed accounts of America in the 1830s with elaborate sociological generalizations. It also predicts the direction of development for American institutions and attitudes. A century and a half later the American journalist Richard Reeves re-traced Tocqueville's travels and re-posed Tocqueville's questions about American democracy, publishing the story of his tour of the country and his answers in American Journey: Traveling with Tocqueville in Search of Democracy in America (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982).
