1805-59, French politician and writer. He was prominent in politics, particularly just before and just after the Revolution of 1848, and was minister of foreign affairs briefly in 1849. His observations made during a government mission to the United States to study the penal system resulted in De la de'mocratie en Ame'rique (2 vol., 1835; tr. Democracy in America , 4 vol., 1835-40), one of the classics of political literature. A liberal whose deepest commitment was to human freedom, Tocqueville believed that political democracy and social equality would, inevitably, replace the aristocratic institutions of Europe. He analyzed the American attempt to have both liberty and equality in terms of what lessons Europe could learn from American successes and failures. Tocquevillefs other important works are LfAncien Re'gime et la re'volution (1856; tr. 1856), which stressed the continuance after the French Revolution of many trends that had begun before, and his Recollections (1893; tr. by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, 1896; complete ed. by J. Alexis de Tocqueville
Writer and statesman, b. at Verneuil, Department of Seine-et-Oise, 29 July 1805; d. at Cannes, 16 April, 1859. He was the great grandson of Malesherbes, the defender of Louis XVI. As a judge at Versailles in 1830 he formed a friendship with Gustave de Beaumont, with whom he traveled to America in 1831. Tocqueville's letters show that he foresaw what strides the Church was destined to made in America and likewise the dogmatic nothingness which would result from Unitarianism and the absurdities of Illuminism. Two publications resulted from this journey; the collective work of two friends published under the title Du système pénitentiaire aux Etats-Unis et de son Application en France ; the second, Tocqueville's personal work, is the celebrated book La démocratie en Amérique , of which the first volume appeared in 1835 and the second in 1840. The work won for Tocqueville admission to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques (1838) and French Academy (1841).
The library of the seminary of St-Sulpice preserves a copy of La Démocratie annotated by Mgr Brute, first bishop of Vincennes, who registered in the margin a number of exceptions to Tocqueville's assertions. These notes have been transcribed by Mgr Baunard. Tocqueville held that democracy could exist only by seeking a moral support in religion, and that religion could only prosper by accommodating itself to democracy, but he is inclined to regard as too severe the doctrinal, disciplinary and liturgical exactions of Catholicism, and in Mgr Baunard's opinions his work leaves the impression he was only half Catholic.

After returning from his visit to the United States (1831-1832), Tocqueville began to write his . Understanding that the political system and societal conditions that obtained across the Atlantic would become established as the general rule in most other countries, beginning with the Old World, and that the propagation of the American democratic model was inevitable, Tocqueville tried to formulate its characteristics and imagine its evolution. Tocqueville foresaw the rise of an egalitarian society based on individualism, unsettledness and isolation, which paradoxically would become more pronounced even as individuals came to resemble each other more and more: "I see an innumerable crowd of similar and equal men who compete among themselves to procure small and vulgar pleasures." ( , II 4.6) He foresaw as well the rise of a new kind of repression, neither despotism nor tyranny, but rather a "kind of servitude, ordered, mild and peaceable (...), a singular power, tutelary, all-encompassing, [acting through] a system of complicated minor rules, miniscule and uniform, which do not break the spirit but soften it, bend and direct it; it rarely forces action, but continually sets up resistance to action; it does not destroy, but prevents birth; it does not tyrannize, but inhibits, compromises, ennervates, subdues, stupefies, and ends by reducing each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid, industrious animals of whom the government is the shepherd." Alexis de Tocqueville

Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.
Alexis de Tocqueville

An American cannot converse, but he can discuss, and his talk falls into a dissertation. He speaks to you as if he was addressing a meeting; and if he should chance to become warm in the discussion, he will say "Gentlemen" to the person with whom he is conversing.
Alexis de Tocqueville

As one digs deeper into the national character of the Americans, one sees that they have sought the value of everything in this world only in the answer to this single question: how much money will it bring in?
Alexis de Tocqueville
Consider any individual at any period of his life, and you will always find him preoccupied with fresh plans to increase his comfort. Alexis de Tocqueville Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.

Democracy in America (1835)
Alexis de Tocqueville
Strangers can often observe with greater clarity that with which we are too familiar, and throughout their history Americans have been fascinated by the comments of foreign travelers. Moreover, those comments have often highlighted aspects of American culture and society that Americans themselves had not previously noticed. Of the many travelers who visited America and wrote down their impressions, none proved as perceptive as Alexis de Tocqueville, and none of their works has had such an enduring impact, not only on explaining Jacksonian America to the Old World, but to the New as well. De Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont, both French aristocrats, were sent by the French government in 1831 to study the American prison system. They arrived in New York in May of that year, and spent nine months traveling around the United States, taking notes not only on prisons, but on all aspects of American society, its economy and its unique political system. After they returned to France in February 1832, the two men submitted their penal report, and Beaumont wrote a novel about race relations in the United States. Democracy in America is acclaimed for its author's perception, but it has also been criticized by recent scholars for its glaring gaps as well. The aristocratic de Tocqueville chose not to see many things, including poverty in the cities and the plight of slaves. But his account of Jacksonian America captures the energy of the young nation and, above all, how intensely people made democracy work. The following selection, analyzing the political system, caught some of the weaknesses of democracy as well as its strengths.

25th August 1831 External appearance: Canada is beyond comparison, of those parts of America which we have visited so far, that which bears the greatest analogy to Europe and, especially, to France.(...) 27th August 1831 Conversation with Mr. Neilson Mr. Neilson is a Scot. Born in Canada (sic) and related by marriage to French Canadians, he speaks French as easily as his own language. Mr. Neilson, although a foreigner, may be regarded as one of the leaders of the French Canadians in all their struggles with the English government. Although he is a Protestant, for fifteen years continuously the French Canadians have elected him as a member of the House of Assembly. He has been an ardent supporter of all measures favouring the French Canadians. He with two others was sent in 1825 (sic) to England to plead for redress of grievances. Mr. Neilson has a lively and original turn of mind. The antithesis between his birth and his social position leads sometimes to strange contrasts in his ideas and in his conversation.
