Alexis de Tocqueville
(CHARLES-ALEXIS-HENRI-MAURICE-CLEREL DE TOCQUEVILLE) Writer and statesman, b. at Verneuil, Department of Seine-et-Oise, 29 July 1805; d. at Cannes, 16 April, 1859. He was the great grandson of Malesherbes, the defender of Louis XVI. As a judge at Versailles in 1830 he formed a friendship with Gustave de Beaumont, with whom he traveled to America in 1831. Tocqueville's letters show that he foresaw what strides the Church was destined to made in America and likewise the dogmatic nothingness which would result from Unitarianism French Academy The library of the seminary bishop of Vincennes, who registered in the margin a number of exceptions to Tocqueville's assertions. These notes have been transcribed by Mgr Baunard . Tocqueville held that democracy could exist only by seeking a moral support in religion , and that religion could only prosper by accommodating itself to democracy, but he is inclined to regard as too severe the doctrinal disciplinary and liturgical exactions of Catholicism , and in Mgr Baunard's opinions his work leaves the impression he was only half Catholic The work has been charged with several serious defects as regards political observation; he dealt at too great length with the constitution and organism of the central government, paying too little attention to the provincial legislation of the various states of the

A Fiscal and Public Policy Profile of
The American Federation of Teachers

Dr. John E. Berthoud, Vice President AdTI ISSUE BRIEF - No. 128
August 2, 1996
Executive Summary The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is gearing up to take a major role in the 1996 elections. This paper aims to provide some understanding of the political and legislative goals of the AFT through analysis of its PAC contributions to Congressional campaigns ($452,742 through the first quarter of 1996) as well as through examination of policy resolutions of the union.
Key findings include:
  • The AFT is supporting Members of Congress who have voted to expand the size of government and opposing Members who have voted to cut the size of government. The AFT is more partisan in their PAC contributions than even the highly-partisan National Education Association. This extreme partisanship of union leadership runs counter to union membership which is much less monolithic in their party loyalties. The AFT is funding the most liberal Members of the House and Senate. The Members they are backing are more liberal than those backed by the NEA. The AFT's overall policy agenda would expand government. By opposing entitlement reform, their agenda is clearly contrary to the interests of children.

A short biography from the site of Liberal International.

* 1805 Verneuil-sur-Seine, France- †1859 Cannes, France.)
Alexis de Tocqueville
After his studies and a career as a judge Tocqueville decided to travel to the United States of America. This was one of the most momentous journeys in the history of political thought. As a result of this journey he wrote “Democracy in America”. Written by a man with a passion for individual liberty this farsighted analysis of a developing democracy provides a profound view of the threats for liberty in modern societies. The equality of the people could also become a breeding ground for despotism and lawlessness. “But it depends upon themselves whether equality is to lead to servitude or freedom, knowledge or barbarism, prosperity or wretchedness." Therefore Tocqueville stressed the importance of a great variety of democratic institutions and a decentralisation of power. Tocqueville helped to write the constitution of the Second Republic and became Foreign Minister of France in 1849. After his dismissal from the office in the same year he focused on writing „The Old Regime and the French Revolution“. He argues that the revolution gave rise to even more tax burden and more centralisation of power than the absolutist regime. Literature:

Weird stuff from Alexis de Tocqueville Institution
Remember the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution? They are the folks who put out the "Linux may help terrorists" press release almost exactly two years ago. They are at it again with this strange release hyping an upcoming book. " In one of the few extensive and critical studies on the source of open source code, Kenneth Brown, president of AdTI, traces the free software movement over three decades from its romantic but questionable beginnings, through its evolution to a commercial effort that draws on unpaid contributions from thousands of programmers. Among other points, the study directly challenges Linus Torvalds' claim to be the inventor of Linux. " They promise excerpts from the book on May 20.
