First shown on BBC2 on July 26, 2003, and repeated on January 15, 2004, Love Again, another dramatised incursion into the strange, solitary life of Philip Larkin, may send more people in search of his bitterly explicit poem with the same title. Those who buy Faber’s latest [2003] version of the Collected Poems will look for it in vain. And they won’t find several other equally well known and loved Larkin poems, either. An April Sunday brings the snow, Poem about Oxford, Letter to a Friend about Girls, Best Society, and At thirty-one, when some are rich are among other excisions from the new book. The reason: This time, Faber chose to exclude all the poems which were not published in Larkin’s lifetime. In other words, they’ve done a U-turn from their first effort at a

R.S. Thomas succeeds in capturing bits of his homeland, Wales, in his poetry. From the verses on Welsh peasants to the reflections on the spiritual nature of the universe, he completely captured my attention. His poetry is like Wales itself - beautiful, rugged, and deeply moving at all times. I turn to his poems to relax, to find peace, to enjoy myself, and to seek God. His poem, "The Bright Field" is one of those things that I hold dear in my life. While this collection does have a good sele...

The Penguin Book of Japanese Verse

There are two types of people who would normally consider buying this book: a person interested in world literature and/or poetry, or someone who enjoys or is studying Japanese literature in particular. For the former, this book will be more than satisfactory. It contains a broad cross-section of poetry, from ancient times to more recent poets, and includes an easy to understand introduction to the general history of Japanese verse. For those who enjoyed this, the next step would be to move in...

    The Poetry of R.S. Thomas
    (Everyman, 1997)
Welshman R.S. Thomas's poetry is marked by several enduring themes; most striking is his fascination with the harsh, bleak landscape of rural Wales and how this has shaped the character of her people. His work also displays huge compassion for the old and weak, his grief at his wife's death, his own struggle over God's existence and his despair at the Welsh people's complicity in allowing their language and culture to decline over the last century. Thomas was hailed by the wider world as one of the purest and most consistent poets of the last century. Because of his sometimes-brutal portrayal of his fellow countrymen, Thomas found it hard to earn the Welsh people's respect during his lifetime. Born in Cardiff, he trained for the clergy in Llandaff and Bangor, teaching himself Welsh in order to communicate with his remote rural parishioners in their native tongue. However, all his poetry was written in English, and this small volume is a perfect example of the breadth of his work. Thomas's style is brutally direct, even bitter he is unsparing in his desire to describe things as he sees them. In "Reservoirs," he condemns the Welsh people's cultural suicide:

The Penguin Book of Japanese Verse
Translated by Geoffrey Bownas and Anthony Thwaite
    London: Penguin, 1964; Pages: lxxvi,243
This eclectic collection of Japanese poetry covers most styles, starting from the third century and ending with the mid-twentieth. It provides a decent overview of waka , and includes such diverse entries as folk songs, lullabies, along with the classic tanka , and the later haiku renga , and . Given this diversity (which was a stated goal of the compilers), it is no surprise that the material is uneven. Although Bownas and Thwaite include recognizably superior poems, they opted for the inclusion of many lesser ones, presumably out of desire to provide a faithful picture of Japanese verse. While this attitude is admirable, I question its usefulness, especially when the book is clearly intended for nonspecialists like me. I care less about getting a "true" picture than about reading fine poetry, much of which is not present in this volume. I also found the 20th century poets the translator chose particularly uninspired, if not quite annoying. The book, however, is not without merits. The long introduction is an excellent starting point for exploration of Japanese poetry even if the authors delve into gory (and extraneous) technicalities about the language. Without prior knowledge of Japanese, I found their discussion of meter, rhyme, etc. quite distracting. On the other hand, the introduction provides a very clear description of crucial concepts, such as
