Thoreau, Henry David O , th u r O Pronunciation Key Thoreau, Henry David , American author and naturalist, b. Concord, Mass., grad. Harvard, 1837. Thoreau is considered one of the most influential figures in American thought and literature. A supreme individualist, he championed the human spirit against materialism and social conformity. His most famous book, Walden (1854), is an eloquent account of his experiment in near-solitary living in close harmony with nature; it is also an expression of his transcendentalist philosophy (see transcendentalism Thoreau grew up in Concord and attended Harvard, where he was known as a serious though unconventional scholar. During his Harvard years he was exposed to the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson , who later became his chief mentor and friend. After graduation, Thoreau worked for a time in his father's pencil shop and taught at a grammar school, but in 1841 he was invited to live in the Emerson household, where he remained intermittently until 1843. He served as handyman and assistant to Emerson, helping to edit and contributing poetry and prose to the transcendentalist magazine

PostCultural Blues - Extreme statements »I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil, - to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school-committee and every one of you will take care of that.«
Henry David Thoreau: Walking »The law will never make men free; it is men who have got to make the law free.«
Slavery in Massachusetts »We do not live our life out and full; we do not fill all our pores with our blood; we do not inspire and expire fully and entirely enough, so that the wave, the comber, of each inspiration shall break upon our extremest shores, rolling till it meets the sand which bounds us, and the sound of the surf come back to us. Might not a bellows assist us to breathe? That our breathing should create a wind in a calm day! We live but a fraction of our life. Why do we not let on the flood, raise the gates, and set all our wheels in motion? He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.«
Journal »There is no more fatal blunderer than he who consumes the greater part of his life getting his living.«

    Henry David Thoreau
    born July 12, 1817, Concord, Mass., U.S.
died May 6, 1862, Concord American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher, renowned for having lived the doctrines of Transcendentalism as recorded in his masterwork, Walden Civil Disobedience
    Early life
A canoe trip that he and John took along the Concord and Merrimack rivers in 1839 confirmed him in the opinion that he ought to be not a schoolmaster but a poet of nature. As the 1840s opened, he took up the profession of poet. He struggled to stay in it and succeeded throughout the decade, only to falter in the 1850s.
    Friendship with Emerson
Sheer chance made his entrance to writing easier, for he came under the benign influence of the essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson With his magnetism Emerson attracted others to Concord. Out of their heady speculations and affirmatives came New England Transcendentalism . In retrospect it was one of the most significant literary movements of 19th-century America, with at least two authors of world stature, Thoreau and Emerson, to its credit. Essentially it combined romanticism with reform. It celebrated the individual rather than the masses, emotion rather than reason, nature rather than man. It conceded that there were two ways of knowing, through the senses and through intuition, but asserted that intuition transcended tuition. Similarly, it conceded that matter and spirit both existed. It asserted, however, that the reality of spirit transcended the reality of matter. It strove for reform yet insisted that reform begin with the individual, not the group or organization.

Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862) In essays, journals, and poems, Henry David Thoreau recorded impassioned expressions of the beauty and the agony of love between men. Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1817. He attended the newly founded Concord Academy and, after taking several leaves from his studies to earn money and to regain his health after his first attack of tuberculosis, went on to graduate from Harvard with the class of 1837. Thoreau is perhaps best known for his stay at Walden Pond, chronicled in Walden (1854), and his night in jail after refusing to pay a poll tax to a government that supported the Mexican War and endorsed slavery. He wrote about this latter act of protest in "Resistance to Civil Government," popularly known as "Civil Disobedience," an essay that has inspired many, including Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to Walden and his well-known speeches and essays on antebellum social concerns, he wrote

    Henry David Thoreau
Walden , the record of this fascinating two years' experience, must always remain a production of great interest and considerable psychological value. Some years before Thoreau took to Walden woods he made the chief friendship of his life, that with Emerson . He became one of the famous circle of the transcendentalists, always keersly preserving his own individuality amongst such more or less potent natures as Emerson Hawthorne and Margaret Fuller. From Emerson Hawthorne and Emerson

The Great Books Henry David Thoreau
This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas . These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy science art music ... theatre , and cinema . We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures , as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities . The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of a Great Books Core List developed by Mortimer Adler (1902-2001) nearly 50 years ago.
