Pros
There is only one Hunter S. Thompson, God bless him, and no one else his like.
Cons His bizarre, stream-of-consciousness style grates with many readers. Full Review "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." HST A consummate Fitzgerald fan, Hunter S. Thompson, a.k.a the Great Gonzo, stands as the journalist of the drug decades. Those who consider his prose too whacked-out and self-indulgent to be of any merit should consider the times when he was writing. In an era when DEMOCRATS sicced cops on nonviolent protesters and a MAJORITY of citizens voted for Nixon not once but TWICE well, who in that age was thinking clearly? Although I find the laxity with which HST's editors coddle his fundamental inability to meet a deadline somehow annoying, who can deny the man's talent? Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72 is so rich with wit and insight that it puts our domesticated journalistic establishment to shame. To my mind, only Michael Lewis's Trail Fever has come close to approximating the sheer honesty of Thompson's take on modern American politics.

My Chat (and Hash-Smoking Session) with Hunter S. Thompson, Gonzo Journalism Legend By Marty Beckerman Author's note: The following piece was originally written for Gear Magazine , but wound up in Ain't It Cool News.
February 3, 2003
"Nothing, nothing," says Hunter S. Thompson—the aging mastermind behind Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the godfather of Gonzo journalism—removing the hash from the plastic baggie and slicing it with a bread knife courtesy of room service. "You'll be fine, my darling," Thompson says, packing the processed greenery into the compact pipe he demanded—along with a quarter-bag of marijuana—before consenting to this 2 a.m. interview.
"Well, okay…" my beautiful girlfriend says, taking the pipe and sucking down the potent vapors, coughing after the first inhalation.
"You're going to go completely crazy now," 65-year-old Thompson says, grinning like a sadistic hyena and putting his arm lecherously around my girlfriend's shoulder. "Completely fucking psychotic. You're doomed, all right. Jesus."
Good fucking Lord, how did this happen?

    LIVES
Billy Graham Henry Kissinger ... Bill Clinton Hunter S. Thompson Journalist Hunter S. Thompson has been shadowing Richard Nixon with his particular brand of subjective "gonzo" writing since the 1960s. Unlike many of Nixon's detractors who later acknowledged his rehabilitation, such as Bob Dole and many of Thompson's colleagues in the media, the gonzo journalist has been remarkably consistent in his negative appraisal of Richard Nixon. On the eve of Nixon's victory in 1968 , Thompson wrote that: "Richard Nixon has never been one of my favourite people, anyway. For years I've regarded his very existence as a monument to all the rancid genes and broken chromosomes that corrupt the possibilities of the American Dream; he was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena and the style of a poison toad." [1] At the time of Nixon's death in 1994, Thompson similarly wrote: "It is Nixon himself who represents that dark, venal and incurably violent side of the American character ... At the stroke of midnight in Washington, a drooling red-eyed beast with the legs of a man and head of a giant hyena crawls out of its bedroom in the South Wing of the White House and leaps 50 feet down to the lawn." Yet for all Thompson's apocalyptic rhetoric, he retains a keen appreciation, almost admiration, for the political longevity and constant reincarnation of Richard Nixon through more than six decades: "Richard Nixon is gone now and I am poorer for it. He was the real thing - a political monster straight out of Grendel..."

Ever wonder what goes into the making of a TASCHEN book? By Steve Crist
I awoke to my first morning in Aspen, the sun shining and the sky clear. My contact Laila was my wake-up call. She was calling to go over details for the meeting that night.
Hunter S. Thompson was excited to meet and had made it clear that I was to come bearing gifts. UPS had just delivered copies of Leonardo and the Luther Bible to complement earlier presents. Hunter had already received a copy of Marilyn inscribed by Benedikt, and had it featured prominently on his coffee table. He desperately wanted a copy of SUMO , and I assured him that if we had any left, it must come by truck — not as a checked piece of my luggage.
A few weeks ago I had spent almost an hour on the phone with Hunter, as he raved about the TASCHEN catalog, and marveled at the type of publisher that could feature both the

    Postcards From The Edge
With the publication of Fear and Loathing In America and Screwjack
Nathan Cain reflects on the journalistic legacy of Hunter S. Thompson

I I was a seventeen year old high school student at the time (an appellation which held the same appeal for me as terminal cancer patient) and the tale of a sportswriter and his crazed 300 lb. Samoan attorney on a drug binge so foul and extreme that it would have turned the most dedicated libertine into a card carrying member of the Prohibition Party was one of the most scabrously funny pieces of work I had ever read. It was a wonderful tale of possibility gone horribly awry, and by the time I was finished with it I had a lot of questions. Who was this lunatic Thompson? Why hadn't I heard of him before? Why was this book classified as nonfiction? Was it humanly possible to behave that badly and live to tell about it? Transmetropolitan , is obviously inspired by the good Doctor.

The dad reappears and waves me back. Turns out she was in the house.
If they’d played up the angle a little more, it would have made the movie much more interesting. The Sopranos has a gay-gangster sub-sub plot going - not that I’ll know how that turns out tonight, because I’m editing this bilge I wrote Saturday. There’s a big gap in what I banged out, because I obviously lost my train of thought and googled Hunter Thompson Children to see if he did have kids. I got a column from 2003 from his ESPN gig. No link because I nuked the history and emptied the cache. But I have these quotes from Duke circa last summer, a prime example of what Neal Tennant calls "Miserabilism":
The U.S. Treasury is empty, we are losing that stupid, fraudulent chickencrap War in Iraq, and every country in the world except a handful of Corrupt Brits despises us. We are losers, and that is the one unforgiveable sin in America.
Beyond that, we have lost the respect of the world and lost two disastrous wars in three years. Afghanistan is lost, Iraq is a permanent war Zone, our national Economy is crashing all around us, the Pentagon's "war strategy" has failed miserably, nobody has any money to spend, and our once-mighty U.S. America is paralyzed by Mutinies in Iraq and even Fort Bragg.

Literary San Francisco: Hunter S. Thompson Hunter S. Thompson is the acclaimed journalist and author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas who lived in this building at 318 Parnassus when he was researching his book Hell's Angels . Thompson introduced the outlaw motorcycle club to mainstream America in 1967 with the book, which Thompson researched by partying with Hell's Angels members. In typical San Francisco fashion, neighbors were undisturbed when Thompson shot out a window here with a 12-gauge shotgun and a .44 magnum , but complained when the Hell's Angels parked their motorcycles on the sidewalk. More recently, Hunter S. Thompson wrote a column for the new San Francisco Examiner Here's how the house may have looked to Hunter and friends in 1967. mistersf.com home
