http://tmf-uk.com/oxlit/flora.html
Flora Thompson (1876-1947), poet, and author of one of the finest memorials of English rural life ever written, was born Flora Timms at Juniper Hill, Brackley, a hamlet on the Oxfordshire border. After leaving school at fourteen she became a Post Office clerk. Following her marriage to her colleague, John Thompson, the couple moved to Bournmouth where Flora began to compose occasional verse. She published a volume of her poetry Bog Myrtle and Peat in 1921. Today she is best remembered for her record of childhood, Lark Rise to Candleford (1945), a trilogy which intimately recalls life in three interdependent Oxfordshire communities: a hamlet, a nearby village, and a small market town. Further childhood recollections form the basis of her novel Still Glides the Stream

Biographical Sketch
Flora Jane (Timms) Thompson was born December 5, 1876 (some sources state 1877), at Juniper Hill, Oxfordshire, England, to Albert Timms, a stone mason, and Emma Timms, a nursemaid. A voracious reader as a child, Flora Timms grew up with five younger siblings in a stern and impoverished household headed by an alcoholic father. At age 14, she left home to become a post office clerk in a nearby village where she continued her education through reading, writing, and observing the surrounding countryside in her off time. She worked in several post offices before meeting and marrying John Thompson, a fellow clerk, in 1903. Flora Thompson left the postal service after her marriage and gave birth to a daughter, Winifred, in 1903 and a son, Henry, in 1909. She continued to write while raising her children and was first published after winning a literary essay contest in The Ladies Companion magazine. One year later her first short story appeared in the same publication. During World War I, the Thompson family moved to Liphook and Flora Thompson rejoined the post office. She gave birth to another son, Peter, in 1918, but continued to write, and in 1920 began publishing short stories in

      Y OU talk of pale primroses,
      Of frail and fragrant posies,
      The cowslip and the cuckoo-flower
      that scent the spring-time lea.
      But give to me the heather,
      The honey-scented heather,
      The glowing gipsy heather
      That is the flower for me!
      You love the garden alleys,
      Smooth-shaven lawns and valleys,
      The cornfield and the shady lane, and
      fisher-sails at sea.
      But give to me the moorland,
      The noble purple moorland,
      The free, far-stretching moorland
      That is the land for me!

    August Again
      T HE heather flings her purple robe
      Once more upon the hill;
      Beneath a shivering aspen-tree
      My Love lies cold and still;
      Ah, very deep my Love must sleep,
      On that far Flemish plain,
      If he does not know that the heath-bells blow
      On the Hampshire hills again!
      O, other maids take other men,
      And just a passing sigh
      Will not disturb the lightest dream;
      But my poor heart would die
      If so very deep my Love should sleep
      Beneath his foreign tree

Drama News ... Devon Lark Rise to Candleford , a trilogy by Flora Thompson (see also Heatherley
with an introduction by H.J. Massingham
Penguin - latest ISBN 0-14-118331-4 (paperback) Lark Rise was first published by Oxford University Press in 1939, Over to Candleford in 1941, Candleford Green in 1943; issued together as a trilogy in 1945. Trilogy published by Penguin Books 1973, reprinted in Penguin Classics 2000.
"In abridging the text for this one-volume edition it has been possible to avoid a number of overlaps and repetitions which were necessary in the three separate books and to omit some descriptive passages designed to set the scene for new readers of the second and third volumes. But to contain the book within its present compass other deletions were necessary. It is in Lark Rise, her first volume, that Flora Thompson paints the most vivid portrait of the countryside, and the way of life that was already disappearing as she herself grew up. These chapters have been abridged much less than the second two volumes in which Laura ventures into the grown-up, and to us more familiar world of Candleford. All omissions in the text have been indicated by the insertion of three full points."

    From the Introduction to the book . . .
    Although best known for her evocative description of childhood times in north Oxfordshire during the 1880s and 90s, the author of Lark Rise to Candleford also lived in Hampshire for nearly thirty of her 70 years. 'Dear, warm, tender Hampshire,' as she says in one of her Peverel Papers , 'Very few have praised her, yet she is most worthy; a dark Madonna, with heather-purple robe and deep pine tresses, sitting in the sun with a blessing for all who seek her.' It was, she tells us, a 'falling in love' on her part with those aspects of the county which she found so different from her native soil - the sharp tang of pine trees, hilltop views and endless carpets of purple heather contrasting with the heavy, earthy scents and flat cornfields of her youth.
