    Dylan Thomas (1914 - 1953) "One: I am a Welshman;
    two: I am a drunkard;
    three: I am a lover of the human race,
    especially of women."
    Als Sohn eines Lehrers und einer Bauerntochter wurde Dylan Marlais Thomas am 27. Oktober 1914 im walisischen Swansea geboren. Er wuchs in seiner ruhigen, von der ländlichen Umgebung geprägten Heimatstadt auf. Dylan war ein kränkliches, schwieriges Kind, er haßte die Schule und floh schon früh in Bücher und seine eigenen literarischen Versuche. In Englisch und Literatur erzielte er gute Leistungen, aber mit anderen Fächern mochte er sich nicht beschäftigen und verließ die Schule schon mit 16. Mit 20 Jahren veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Gedichtband. Dann führte er ein typisches "Dichterleben", das von chronischen Geldsorgen, Sinnkrisen uns Selbstzweifeln überschattet war, die er im Alkohol zu ertränken versuchte. 1950 ging er nach Amerika, wo er mit Lesungen großen Erfolg hatte. Am 9. November 1953 starb er nach einem exzessiven Trinkgelage in der amerikanischen Metropole New York. Dylan Thomas schrieb Erzählungen und Gedichte, die sich durch gewagte Satzkonstruktionen und paradoxe Bilder auszeichneten und dem Symbolismus nahestanden. Weltweiten Ruhm erlangte er vor allem durch sein Hörspiel "Unter dem Milchwald", mit dem er seine walisischen Heimat ein Denkmal setzte.

    Tra modernismo e postmoderno. Riflessioni sulla lirica di Dylan Thomas "La mia arca canta nel sole
    Alla fine dell'estate accelerata da Dio

    Dylan Thomas, "Prologo dell'Autore" (1952) Q The Tightrope Writers. Studies of Mannerism in Modern English Literature (1956), dipoi tradotto da Ruggero Bianchi per l’Einaudi con il titolo I funamboli (Torino 1963 e 1974). E l’elenco, aggiunto il nome di Roberto Sanesi (si veda tra l’altro, più per l’intento di ripercorrere l’iter della poesia di Thomas che per l’effettiva riuscita del disegno, il suo Dylan Thomas , nell’edizione garzantiana del marzo 1977), andrebbe avanti all’infinito; e verrebbe posto in pregiudizio l’intento nostro che è quello di tenere al riparo, nei debiti limiti né oziosamente, da vecchie etichette (quale quella di modernismo , già di per sé tutta da rivedere) un autore che vorremmo riesaminare –sommariamente per quanto ci è dato scorgere nel suo lavoro, e senza che qualche menestrello si intrometta a cantarcela alla vecchia maniera– alla luce dei tempi nostri, in un tentativo di riapertura del caso Thomas.

    Dylan Thomas
    We present the poetry of Dylan Thomas, read by the author. Thomas often wrote for the sound of words as much as for their meaning, and hearing his rich voice and dramatic style lends a new sense to his verse. The New York Times called Thomas "both a maker and speaker of poetry," and this reading demonstrates the poet's unique manipulation of language and metaphor. Thomas was known for his stormy private life and alcoholism, and died in 1953 at the age of 39.

    56. Villanelle
    Advice by Damon McLaughlin on how to write a villanelle, with an example by dylan thomas and an example of a terzanelle by Lewis Turco. Part of a course at the University of Northern Iowa called The Craft of Poetry.

    Villanelles are a nightmare; there is no other way to say it. The form is originally French and didn't appear in English until the later 1800's. It is 19 lines long, but only uses two rhymes, while also repeating two lines throughout the poem. The first five stanzas are triplets, and the last stanza is a quatrain such that the rhyme scheme is as follows: "aba aba aba aba aba abaa." The tricky part is that the 1st and 3rd lines from the first stanza are alternately repeated such that the 1st line becomes the last line in the second stanza, and the 3rd line becomes the last line in the third stanza. The last two lines of the poem are lines 1 and 3 respectively, making a rhymed couplet. Confused? A villanelle needs no particulary meter or line length, so feel free to experiment with the form. It is terribly obsessive and can bring out the emotions of any neurotic writer. This is Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night." It is one of the most famous villanelles and, while Thomas does not experiment much with the form, the poem is a great example of how villanelle repetition works. The boldface and italics are there to more easily show the repeated lines and demonstrate the structure of the poem. Do not go gentle into that good night

    Thomas, Dylan (Marlais)
    Thomas, Dylan Marlais (1914-1953), Welsh poet, short-story writer, and playwright, renowned for the unique brilliance of his verbal imagery and for his celebration of natural beauty.
    After the war Thomas was a literary commentator for BBC radio. Under Milk Wood (published posthumously, 1954), a play for voices, was originally written for radiobroadcast; when Thomas read it for its first public performance in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1953, it was still unfinished. The work became his most famous piece; it evokes the lives of the inhabitants of Llareggub, a small, Welsh seaside town. Noted for his readings of his own verse, Thomas became legendary in the United States, where he gave many lecture tours and gained a wide following. Nevertheless, his last years were shadowed by an increasingly tragic view of his own tempestuous life. His death in New York City on November 9, 1953, was brought on by alcoholism.

    Ritratto dell'autore da cucciolo e altri racconti di Dylan Thomas "E là io mi addormentai sul montagnoso panciotto di mio zio,
    e, mentre dormivo, –Chi va là?– gridò Sentry alla luna che volava."
    Dylan Thomas, «Una storia» (1953) D i pochi scrittori di questo secolo si sa e si è scritto tanto quanto di Dylan Thomas (Swansea 1914 – New York 1953). Un’attrazione straordinaria ha fatto sì che tutto ciò che lo riguardasse fosse pervaso da un senso di leggenda. Capita così che ogni scrittore aspiri in qualche modo a dire la sua sull’autore, come è evidentemente il mio caso. In altri casi –penso a Bob Dylan– si è preso il nome dell’autore per farne il proprio nome d’arte, o –come è il caso di Dylan Dog– ci si è ispirati per il titolo di un fumetto. Questo autore lo vorrebbero raccontare in molti. Purtroppo, come nel caso di un ampio articolo di Pietro Citati pubblicato su Repubblica un paio di anni fa, ognuno descrive il poeta a modo suo, infischiandosi di cosa accadde nella vita di Thomas e nella sua opera. Da un certo punto di vista, questa posizione è legittima, nella misura in cui si vuole sentirsi vivi all’ombra semovente d’uno dei grandi bardi del Novecento, scherzoso e ridanciano e cupo come pochi altri colleghi. Del resto il personaggio pare uscito da un film: povero in canna, ubriacone, donnaiolo, vissuto in uno sperduto paesino gallese di duecento anime e diventato famoso in tutto il mondo.
