http://www.januarymagazine.com/profiles/athomas.html
Buy it online "I'm intrigued about why everyone wants to be Irish." For Audrey Thomas, the story was born in a series of whispers. She kept hearing about Isobel Gunn, the only white woman to live and work at Hudson's Bay in the early part of the 19th century and prior to the Selkirk Settlement. The first of the whispers occurred while Thomas was living in Scotland in the mid-1980s. She was based in Edinburgh for a year as a Canada-Scotland Literary Fellow for which she had to travel "all over Scotland talking to writing groups. That was the first time I heard about Isobel Gunn." Later that same decade, Thomas was on assignment in Scotland's Orkney Isles for Saturday Night Magazine, " and I heard about Isobel Gunn again. I just kept hearing about her and I thought: I really want to do something with this." Though she kept hearing about Isobel Gunn, the actual, factual research material wasn't so easy to come by. Thomas spent four years of what amounted to looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. "It's this little book, but just boxes and boxes of research," says Thomas. The author was only able to recover the thinnest of details about Isobel Gunn's life her birth certificate, some scattered log entries, a census line and Gunn's obituary but it was enough of a frame on which to embroider her well-told tale.

Audrey Tautou He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not and Dirty Pretty Things Interviewed by Ceri Thomas How did you find working with first-time director Laetitia Colombani on "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not"? I found her very precise. She knew exactly what she wanted. Even though she's very young, she managed to control the whole production. She knew her subject - this strange kind of madness - very well because she had studied it for a very long time. It was odd working with someone about the same age as me - she's just a little bit older - but it was very nice. Why did you choose to do the film?

Biographical Sketch
Research note and early draft of Aubrey Thomas's Isobel Gunn Ten Green Bottles (1967), and then several novels: Mrs. Blood Songs My Mother Taught Me Latakia (1979), and Real Mothers (1981), a collection of stories. In her work, Thomas experiments with narrative method and use of language to depict womenÂ’s sense of emotional alienation, struggling with the dark side of the self, or hovering on the verge of disintegration. Thomas received the Marian Engel Award in 1987 and the Canada-Australia Literary Prize in 1990. She has won the B.C. Book Prize for fiction three times: for her novel Intertidal Life (1985), the short story collection Wild Blue Yonder (1991), and most recently for the novel Coming down from Wa (1995). She was nominated for the Governor GeneralÂ’s Literary Award and Commonwealth Literature Prize in 1996. Thomas has taught creative writing at the University of Victoria and at the University of British Columbia and has been writer-in-residence at Concordia University, at Simon Fraser University, among others. Thomas lives on Galiano Island, British Columbia.

Marlo Thomas The Marlo Thomas Interview – At a press conference at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, TV personality and film star Marlo Thomas discusses the medium of TV (“an art form in a business world”), developing her own material, (It’s really catch as catch can”), why there’s so few stars in the business today, (“There’s no system out there to support you”) and movie people who say they have “instincts” about you (“Most only have money instincts”). She also comments about the use of “laughtracks” on TV and the psychology of comedy, being raised by her father (Danny Thomas) to be a “thoroughbred” and her penchant for being a perfectionist. She also reacts to critics who say she’s “too difficult” (“If I was a man, I’d be considered smart”) and “too successful” (“You’re only as good as everybody around you”). AN OCEAN OF SACRED MEMORIES
Chapter Forty-Eight It was midday. The Dawsons, Brinkleys, Cooks, and close family and friends attended the funeral of Millicent Amber Taylor. She had died two days ago from her severe fight with polio. The day of Millie's death, Audrey didn't say one single word, didn't eat, and stayed in her room. Every time Rose, Jack, or Max went in there, she was lying on her bed, staring at the ceiling with tears streaming down her cheeks, which would stain her black dress. Either that, or sitting down, writing, when they would came in bringing food as an excuse to come in. Today, Audrey was sitting one row behind the front pew, in between her mother and her older brother, Max. Audrey started at the coffin that her friend lay in. It was as if it was screaming towards Audrey, and the only thing that she could do was to stare back at it. Rose held Jack's hand, squeezing now and then when she looked over to her daughter, as she stared ahead intently. Max comforted Audrey by giving her little hugs with his right arm, and whispering, "It's all right. Shh," in her ear, trying to stop her from crying. Rose knew exactly what was going on in Audrey's mind. What she was feeling and everything. So did Jack.
