The World According to Paul Theroux
Dave Weich
, Powells.com Of the fifty travel-related essays, articles, and book reviews in Fresh Air Fiend , all but one were written after the publication of Theroux's previous collection, Sunrise with Seamonsters — a humbling fact when you consider the range of geographical and thematic coverage within the new book's pages: cross-country skiing through the snowy backwoods of Maine; paddling Pacific islands; following the Zambezi River across Africa; trespassing in Florida; and reporting from China before and after Tiananmen Square, then again during the hand-over of Hong Kong. In conversation as in his writing, Theroux pulls no punches. Having spent nearly forty years roaming the planet, living and traveling amongst whomever would have him, he's earned the right to say he's seen a few things. In fact, he's witnessed first-hand so many of the formative cultural changes of our lifetime. "I thought, I'll never write a blockbuster. I'll never write The Great American Novel," he explained. "What I'd write would reflect where I'd been and what I'd seen — what I know."

http://www.worldmind.com/Cannon/Culture/Interviews/theroux.html
Welcome to the Interviews section of Worldguide! You have found the November 27, 1995 interview with writer Paul Theroux, aired on the Futurist Radio Hour in the San Francisco Bay Area. Paul Theroux, the prolific author of novels that include " Chicago Loop " and " Mosquito Coast " and travel books such as " The Old Patagonian Express " has taken a look at the countries and cultures that ring the Mediterranean, from Gibraltar through the Balkans and back to Tangier, including conversations with American expatriate author Paul Bowles. and Naguib Mafouz. His itinerary is never known to him, and his picture of the world is not one of plush resorts, slaphappy tourists, and ancient ruins in the tradition of the Grand Tour, but rather of life at street level. Stephen Capen spoke with him in a phone interview from his home in Hawaii.
