"All Change is Fascinating"
Paul Theroux talks about his novel, Kowloon Tong , and the implications of the Hong Kong handover
July 3, 1997

"S tyle is not very important, style's nothing really," V. S. Naipaul once told Paul Theroux. "But a book needs a reason for being written." Theroux took his West Indian mentor's advice to heart a long time ago, but nowhere is his reason for writing a book more evident than in his most recent novel, Kowloon Tong . Set in the waning days of British imperial rule, with China preparing to take back Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong attempts to capture the soul of the city that has been in the news so much of late.
Theroux's connection with The Atlantic goes back to the 1960s. Beginning in 1968 and continuing through 1979, Theroux wrote ten pieces (short stories and reports) for the magazine. Drawn from his extensive experiences in East Africa and Asia, Theroux reported, often with characteristically dry and acidic wit, on the characters hard-drinking soldiers of fortune, aging expatriates, bored diplomats and their discontented wives, jaded foreign correspondents, anglicized Orientals, idealistic young Americans that he had come across in his travels.
Theroux is a prolific writer: he has written more than forty books and has published articles and short stories in a variety of major newspapers and magazines. And he seems to show no signs of slowing down; in 1995 he published

Paul Theroux, like most writers, is far uglier in person than he is in photographs. For one thing, there's the matter of his bluntly-cut toupee, which tilts noticeably from side to side as he shifts in his chair. For another, there are Theroux's teeth, which are so badly stained they seem to be carved from the driftwood that dots the nearby Cape Cod shoreline. Never mind his unpleasant habit of hacking up massive gobs of phlegm, which he then expectorates into the Persian carpet at his visitor's feet. None of this is true, of course. I've never met Paul Theroux, and have no reason to believe that he wears a toupee, or has rotten teeth, or likes to spit into his carpet. But he has encouraged me, over the course of several telephone conversations, to make things up about him.
The truth ends here.

Midway through our conversation about Fresh Air Fiend , Paul Theroux reminds me that during the 15 years in which he wrote the 49 travel essays and articles collected here, he also wrote a major book on China (Riding the Iron Rooster), three additional travel books, a controversial memoir about his friendship with V.S. Naipaul (In Sir Vidia's Shadow), and more than a handful of novels (including My Secret History, Millroy the Magician, and Kowloon Tong). Something like a dozen books in all. "It's not that I was writing these pieces with my left hand," Theroux says, "but I was doing other things at the same time. These pieces illuminate those books, and those books derive somewhat from the experiences recorded here. There's a certain synchronicity in writing travel pieces and also living my life as a novelist and a travel writer." This is disheartening. You'd expect perhaps even hope that there'd be a significant decline in quality in these occasional pieces, written over the years for publications as varied as Outside magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. And, no doubt, readers will have their favorites and less favorites among them. But in each of the pieces collected in

by Paul Theroux T HE Ritz bar was empty, quiet, but crazed with decoration. I tried to get a fix on it. It was white, with a Bischof gleam, gold-trimmed mirrors that repeated its Edwardian flourishes of filigree and cigar wrappers, frosty statuettes, velvet and the illusion of crystal in etched glass. The chocolate box of a whore's boudoir. I guessed I would have to lie on my belly to get the shot I wanted, but then I noticed in all that tedious gilt a man behind the bar polishing a goblet. He wore a white dinner jacket and was bald; his head shone. I saw at once how the crown of his skull gathered the whole room and miniaturized it, and he wore it like a map pasted to his dome. Shoot him nodding and you've got a vintage Weegee.
"A very good evening to you, Madam."
"Same here," I said. "A large gin and tonic."
"Kew," he said, and handed it over.
"You're welcome," I said. I expected him to take a swing at me, but he only picked up another goblet and continued his polishing. What a head! It made the wide-angle lens obsolete. But I didn't have the heart to do him. In fact, since arriving in London I had begun to feel winded and wheezy, a shortness of breath and a sort of tingling in my fingers and toes I put down to heartburn and jet lag. The Samoans remained hospitable as long as someone else paid their bills. They sat by the littered lagoon, cooling their bellies, and eating.
Samoa had become part of the American family and was content. Samoans were generally unenthusiastic, but similarly they were uncomplaining, and this little-brown-brother relationship would continue as long as America fed them and paid for their pleasures.

    "O-Zone"
Set in the near future, it is a time when Sunday afternoons are spent in a sleep induced comas, women go to "contact clinics" to become pregnant, where they and their partners wear masks or else they have fetal implants. New York City is filled with terrible illegal aliens - Skells, Starkies, Trolls, Diggers and Roaches. To live in the city is to live in fortress like towers and rarely go outside. So begins our tale of seven wealthy couples and a boy, who decide to spend New Year's Eve in The Outer Zone. The Outer Zone has been uninhabited for about 15 years following a disastrous nuclear waste leak or so they have been told by the government. Now it is safe for elite vacations. O-Zone is Theroux once again extolling the theme that open spaces are important, alienation from nature is responsible for decadence and what we call civilization ain't too civil. But maybe that's why I like his stories. This is not what I call a tremendous piece of fiction, characters are flat and the story is somewhat predictable, but it's a fun thinking book
