William Makepeace Thackeray
Born in India but educated in England after his father's death, Thackeray saw journalism as a way to earn money. His love of art (he spent 4 years as a student in Paris) ended due to lack of funds. On his return to London he wrote for The Times New Monthly and Frazer's Magazine . His initial publications in The Paris Sketchbook were considered a failure (and written under pseudonyms). His column in Punch (from 1842) "Jeames' Diary" was very popular as it as society seen through the eyes of the butler. Novels such as "Vanity Fair" (1847), "Pendennis" (1848), "The Newcomers" (1853) made him famous. On his retirement he became editor of Cornhill Magazine which printed his later poems and novels. He also undertook lecture tours of America and England. Read on-line Buy from Amazon.com The Adventures of Major Gahagan The Bedford-Row Conspiracy Catherine The Great Hoggarty Diamond ... Email

William Makepeace Thackeray wurde am 18. Juli 1811 in Kalkutta geboren und starb am 24. Dezember 1863 in London.

William Makepeace Thackeray
William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India, the only son of Richmond Thackeray, a Collector in the East Indian Company's service. After his father died he was sent to home to England. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Thackeray abandoned his studies without taking a degree, having lost some of his inheritance of twenty thousand pounds through gambling. In the beginning of the 1830s he visited Germany, where he met Goethe. During the years 1831-33 Thackeray studied law at the Middle Temple, London, but had little enthusiasm to continue his studies. In 1833, he brought the National Standard , but lost his fortune a year later in the Indian bank failures and other bad investments. After art studies in Paris, Thackeray returned to London in 1837 and started his career as a hard-working journalist. Often he used absurd pen names such as George Savage Fitz-Boodle, Michael Angelo Titmarsh, Théophile Wagstaff, and C.J. Yellowplush, Esq. In 1836 he married a poor Irish girl, Isabella Shawe; they had three daughters. Thackeray began to contribute regularly to Fraser's Magazine Morning Chronicle New Monthly Magazine and The Times . His writings attracted first attention in Punch , where he satirized English snobbery. These sketches reappeared in 1848 as

William Makepeace Thackeray: A Brief Biography
Robert Fletcher, Assistant Professor, West Chester University
[Thackeray's decorated initial "W" from Vanity Fair The Tremendous Adventures of Major Goliah Gahagan Vanity Fair , and The Newcomes Thackeray was given the "education of a gentleman" at private boarding schools (so-called "public schools"), including six years at Charterhouse, and the canings and other abuses he suffered in these institutions became the basis for remembrances in essays, such as The Roundabout Papers , as well as episodes in novels ( Vanity Fair and The Newcomes , again, offer important examples). He also recalled the dryasdust lessons in the classical languages he was forced to learn and their deleterious effect on his feelings for classical literature, along with the grateful escapes he made to the popular fictions of the day, works such as Scott's Heart of Midlothian or Pierce Egan's Life in London . He was not a standout as a student, but he went on to Cambridge, where he entered Trinity College in 1819. His tutor was William Whewell (philosopher of natural science, nowadays of interest for his theory of discovery), but Thackeray saw little of the inaccessible don, preferring to spend his time at wine parties. Thanks to such amusements, his own inability to excel at mathematics, the poor preparation he had received at Charterhouse, and a penchant for gambling and trips to the Continent, Thackeray left the university without a degree after two years. The life of the undergraduate at "Oxbridge" is represented obliquelyfor "the life of such boys does not bear telling altogether"in

    from "Nutcracker and Mouseking"

P erlipat's mother was the wife of a king-that is, a queen; and, in consequence, Perlipat, the moment she was born, was a princess by birth. The king was beside himself for joy as he saw his beautiful little daughter lying in her cradle; he danced about, and hopped on one leg, and sang out, "Was anything ever so beautiful as my Perlipatkin?" And all the ministers, presidents, generals, and staff-officers, hopped likewise on one leg, and cried out, "No, never!" However, the real fact is, that it is quite impossible, as long as the world lasts, that a princess should be born more beautiful than Perlipat. Her little face looked like a web of the most beautiful lilies and roses, her eyes were the brightest blue, and her hair was like curling threads of shining gold. Besides all this, Perlipat came into the world with two rows of pearly teeth, with which, two hours after her birth, she bit the lord chancellor's thumb so hard that he cried out, "O gemini!" Some say he cried out, "O dear!" but on this subject people's opinions are very much divided, even to the present day. In short, Perlipat bit the lord chancellor on the thumb, and all the kingdom immediately declared that she was the wittiest, sharpest, cleverest little girl, as well as the most beautiful.

THACKERAY, WILLIAM MAKEPEACE In February 1829 Thackeray went to Trinity College, Cambridge, and in that year contributed some engaging lines on " Timbuctoo," the subject for the Prize Poem (the prize for which was won in that year by Tennyson), to a little paper called The Snob, a title which Thackeray afterwards utilized in the famous Book of Snobs. The first stanza has become tolerably well known, but is worth quoting as an early instance of the direct comic force afterwards employed by the author in verse and prose burlesques: " In Africaa quarter of the world Men's skins are black; their hair is crisp and curled; And somewhere there, unknown to public view, A mighty city lies, called Timbuctoo." In 1834 or at the end of 1833 Thackeray established himself in Paris in order to study art seriously. He had, like Clive in The Newcomes, shown talent as a caricaturist from his early boyhood. His gift proved of great value to him in illustrating much of his own literary work in a fashion which, despite all incorrectness of draughtsmanship, conveyed vivid suggestions that could not have been so well given by anyone but himself. Perhaps his pencil was at its best technically in such fantastic work as is found constantly in the initial letters which he frequently used for chapters in his various kinds of work, and in those drawings made for the amusement of some child friends which were^ the origin of The Rose and the Ring. In 1836'Thackeray married Isabella, daughter of Colonel Matthew Shawe. There were three daughters born of the marriage, one dying in infancy. The eldest daughter, Anne Isabella (b. 1837), married in 1877 Mr Richmond Ritchie, of the India Office, who in 1907 was created a K.C.B. She inherited literary talent from her father and wrote several charming works of fiction, notably Miss Angel (1875), and subsequently edited Thackeray's works and published some volumes of criticism and reminiscences. The younger daughter, Harriet Marian (b. 1840), married (Sir) Leslie Stephen in 1867 and died in 1875. Thackeray's own family life was early broken, for Mrs Thackeray, to quote Trollope, " became ill and her mind failed her, in 1840, and he became as it were a widower to the end of his days ; Mrs Thackeray did not die till 1892.

    Thackeray, William Makepeace
English novelist and humorist, one of the foremost exponents of the 19th-century realistic novel, exemplified by his two most famous works, Vanity Fair and Henry Esmond.
Thackeray was born July 18, 1811, in Calcutta, India, into a wealthy English merchant family. In 1829 Thackeray entered the University of Cambridge. Leaving the university without taking his degree, he attempted to develop his literary and artistic abilities, first as the editor of a short-lived journal and subsequently as an art student in Paris. In 1840, despite a series of financial reverses and the mental illness of his wife, Thackeray produced The Paris Sketchbook, a series of reprints of his contributions to various literary journals. Comic Tales and Sketches (1841) contained the Yellowplush Papers, Major Gahagan, and the Bedford Row Conspiracy. After joining the staff of the humorous journal Punch in 1842, he published the Irish Sketchbook in 1843 and Cornhill to Cairo in 1847.
Thackeray began the serial publication of his great satirical novel Vanity Fair early in 1847, quickly establishing a reputation as one of the major literary figures of his time. In such subsequent novels as Pendennis (1848), Henry Esmond (1852), The Newcomes (1853), and The Virginians (1857), he broadened his observation of social situations to various eras and locales. These widely acclaimed works brought Thackeray new recognition. He became a principal competitor of his great contemporary

Thackeray, William Makepeace u r E Pronunciation Key Thackeray, William Makepeace , English novelist, b. Calcutta, India. He is important not only as a great novelist but also as a brilliant satirist. In 1830, Thackeray left Cambridge without a degree and later entered the Middle Temple to study law. In 1833 he became editor of a periodical, the National Standard, Fraser's. As a contributor to Punch he often parodied the false romantic sentiment pervading the fiction of his day. In 1848, Thackeray achieved widespread popularity with his humorous Book of Snobs and the same year rose to major rank among English novelists with Vanity Fair, a satirical panorama of upper-middle-class London life and manners at the beginning of the 19th cent. The novel contains many fascinating characters, particularly Becky Sharp, who, although clever and unscrupulous, is also extremely appealing. His reputation increased in 1850 with the completion of the partly autobiographical novel Pendennis.
