104. Fathers Of The Early Church Speak
Christians are unfamiliar with the work of Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin the Martyr, Irenaeus, tertullian, Origen, Cyprian
http://csasso.hypermart.net/fathers5.htm
The Fathers of the Church spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, defended the Church in apologetic writing and fought the many heresies of the first six centuries of Christianity. These men, also called Apostolic Fathers, gave special witness to the faith, some dying the death of a martyr. Like Jesus who referred to Abraham as a spiritual father (Luke 16: 24) and St. Paul, who referred to himself in the same terms (1 Cor 4: 15), the Fathers were zealous for the word of God. Their writings are a testimony to the faith of the early Church, yet many Christians are unfamiliar with the work of Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin the Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian of Carthage, Athanasius, Ephraim, Cyril of Jerusalem, Hilary of Poitiers or Gregory the Great to name of few of the early Fathers. Each month we will provide biographical information and examples of the writing of these great men of faith. Our focus here will be on Tertullian.
Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullian was born to pagan parents in Carthage, North Africa between 155-160 A.D. A lawyer by profession, he converted to Christianity in 193 A.D. and became a Catholic apologist until 212 A.D., when he succumbed to the Montanist heresy (among other beliefs they held that sins committed after baptism could not be forgiven and practiced a severe asceticism). His writings during his period of orthodoxy arguably represent the first in the new vernacular of the West, Latin, by a Christian author. His prolific writings are often quoted by later Christians, especially St. Jerome and St. Augustine. His most famous work entitled simply, "Apology" is preserved in no less than 36 codices. Written about 197 A.D., it's most quoted phrase is, no doubt, "The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians!" Tertullian wrote many other works, some of which are quoted below. He died between 240-250 A.D.

T ertullian was born during the latter half of the second century and raised in the cultured pagan environment of Carthage where he was well trained in rhetoric and possibly in law. He converted to Christianity as an adult and devoted himself thence to apologetic, polemical and moral writings, all of which display his characteristic brilliance and intolerance. He was the first major Christian thinker to write in Latin discourse. According to Jerome, he was a presbyter, but it is more likely that he was never more than a catechist or teacher. He became a Montanist and initially advocated it within the context of the church, but he eventually left the church when he became convinced that it would not recognize this New Prophecy, with its assertion of direct inspiration, its declaration of the end, and its puritanical and revivalist ethic. Thereafter he condemned the church as unspiritual and so as compromised by worldliness. Notes prepared by Kevin Dodd, PhD Sample Text CHAP. XX. Christ Born of a Virgin, of Her Substance. THE ARENA, CIRCUS AND THEATRE
The question of the attendance by Christians at Sporting or Entertainment Events, or participation in, is raised from time to time. The same question is also valid about the use of the printed page, radio and T.V. for learning of these events. It is sometimes worthwhile looking at how this issue was dealt with in the past. Tertullian, circa AD160 - AD220, one of our important Christian writers, wrote on this subject in the second century, and although the circumstances have changed the principles certainly haven't. This issue has had prominence quite recently, Evangelical Christians, including 'Protestant Reformed Ministers' and Episcopal Bishops, who are also football supporters, have had to decide whether to 'go to church' (a terminology which implies considerable impropriety, when used by Christians.) or attend a football match on the First Day of the Week, known as Sunday to the Secular and Pagan society and The Lord's Day to Christians. However, the question goes much deeper. Tertullian gives us more than a clue in searching for the answer.

EMAIL ME PATIENCE by Tertullian CHAPTER 1 Confess to the Lord my God that I certainly have courage, not to say presumption, to have dared to write on patience, a virtue which I am utterly unfit to practice, being, as I am, a man of no account. For, those who undertake to set forth and recommend any virtue should first give some evidence of practicing this virtue, and they should give proper direction to their constant admonition by the example of their own conduct, lest they be put to the blush at the discrepancy between their words and deeds. And would that the blushing brought an improvement, that the shame (we feel) at not doing what we have suggested to others would teach us to do it! But, of course, it is with certain virtues as with certain vices: their greatness is so overwhelming that only the grace of divine inspiration can help us to attain and practice them. For, that which is in the highest sense good belongs in the highest degree to God, and no one dispenses it save He who possesses it, to each one as He sees fit. It will be, then, a comfort to discuss that which it is not granted us to enjoy, somewhat in the manner of the sick, who, when deprived of health, cannot refrain from proclaiming its blessings.

Tertullian (Short) Biography
From Encarta® Excerpt: Tertullian wrote many theological treatises, of which 31 have survived. In his various works he strove either to defend Christianity, to refute heresy, or to argue some practical point of morality or church discipline. Tertullian influenced the later church fathers, especially Saint Cyprian —and through them, all Christian theologians of the West. His writings demonstrate a profound knowledge of Greek and Latin literature. He was the first writer in Latin to formulate Christian theological concepts, such as the nature of the Trinity

Excerpts from the Original Electronic Text at the web site of New Advent's Father's of the Church.
The following excerpts contain Tertullian's two most famous expressions: "what has Athens to do with Jerusalem" and it is "to be believed because it is absurd." Both expressions occurred in the context of a polemical war of words against "heretics" and perhaps give an exaggerated sense of Tertullian's distrust of the role of reason in religion. Nevertheless, they capture the essence of a Christianity grounded in faith and acutely aware that the vital tenets of Christian faith transcended reason, appearing irrational to natural reason.
Prescription Against Heretics Chapter 1
Introduction: Heresies Must Exist, and Even Abound. THE character of the times in which we live is such as to call forth from us even this admonition, that we ought not to be astonished at the heresies (which abound) neither ought their existence to surprise us, for it was foretold that they should come to pass; nor the fact that they subvert the faith of some, for their final cause is, by affording a trial to faith, to give it also the opportunity of being "approved." Groundless, therefore, and inconsiderate is the offence of the many who are scandalized by the very fact that heresies prevail to such a degree. How great (might their offence have been) if they had not existed. When it has been determined that a thing must by all means be, it receives the (final) cause for which it has its being. This secures the power through which it exists, in such a way that it is impossible for it not to have existence. . . .

His conversion to Christianity took place about 197-198 (so Harnack, Bonwetsch, and others), but its immediate antecedents are unknown except as they are conjectured from his writings. The event must have been sudden and decisive, transforming at once his own personality; he himself said that he could not imagine a truly Christian life without such a conscious breach, a radical act of conversion: "Christians are made, not born" (

Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullian (b. ca. , d. ca. ) is a highly ambivalent character in early Christianity On one hand, he was the first great writer of Latin Christianity. He was born, lived, wrote, and died in Carthage , and was one of the most notably grand and original writers of the early Church. On the other hand, late in his life he left orthodox catholic Church and joined the radical, millenialist cult of the Montanists , and was thus never declared a saint by any surviving Christian church. Rulers of the Roman Empire, if, seated for the administration of justice on your lofty tribunal, under the gaze of every eye, and occupying there all but the highest position in the state, you may not openly inquire into and sift before the world the real truth in regard to the charges made against the Christians; if in this case alone you are afraid or ashamed to exercise your authority in making public inquiry with the carefulness which becomes justice; if, finally, the extreme severities inflicted on our people in recently private judgments, stand in the way of our being permitted to defend ourselves before you, you cannot surely forbid the Truth to reach your ears by the secret pathway of a noiseless book. known
