Susan Terris The Last Time This Water Saw Land, It Was in Africa The last time this parrot saw fish,
it was flying over an island purpled by sunset.
The last time this pebble skipped across
a white sand beach, it was tossed
by a man with a parrot on his shoulder
and a fish in his creel.
The last time this key saw a lock,
I was on an island with the man, the parrot, the creel,
the fish, and a hot golden ball at the horizon.
But winds were fierce, the man and the light
unforgiving. So I shook sand from my shoes, locked my suitcase, and caught a plane. In my hand, one smooth pebble *Lynx Eye *5 A.M. EAST MORICHES, N.Y. Bobbing on the surface: a stuffed bear, a knapsack filled with frozen steak, a photo of a black dog. They tell the divers not to look at faces, because faces personalize death. On the list, I see my sister's name. But it wasn't my sister. Someone else with her name caught that flight. Still, in a moment of parallel time

SUSAN TERRIS
    WAITING ROOM
    Beneath a buzz of
    fluorescence, eyelids puff,
    pupils contract protesting
    glare. Stripes snake
    around the couch, and three,
    escaped, slither over walls.
    Those walls, white now,
    are chipped by hinges
    behind the door, hinting at
a hidden cave of stalactite blue.
Stripes yet no pictures, clock, or thumbed copies of Time Any other doctor's office says No Smoking . But here, beside restroom key, an ashtray reeks, offers bouquet of wrinkled white buds. Across on the writhing couch, blinking and inhaling is a crazy-eyed woman. Do I knuckling pen look crazed to her? Blood vessels constrict, lungs burn. I want to stand, strain, belay from that room; yet I will myself to wait for a chipped-away version of the child who would shrink herself from this suffocating, blue-green, thin-fat, multi-striped hell.
    DU CHIEN
(an untranslatable French idiom) sometimes seems to be a compliment hinting at bite and piquancy. Then probing deeper I suspect it's only another way of pointing out the sleek creature a man might hope to tame or teach to fetch one who can learn on command come, sit, stay, lie down, shake hands

Susan Terris AT FOUR IN THE MORNING
At four in the morning, my children come scratching, slithering beneath the bedroom door where they lick my ears, make fingers itch, squeeze at my breast;
disembodied, they beg to be mothered.
At four in the morning, my children screech nagging me to nurse them then shake them off the tit so they can swarm out and sting other people's sleeping breasts.
LIFE BYTES
1. Girl
When she fell through ice on the pond, she said it was an accident, but she did it on purpose, denying chill or fear, so she could walk on water.
When she climbed out the window, scrabbled over loose clay tiles, she told herself it was safe to spring from the roof because she could fly.
When she night-prowled through the old sawmill, she believed herself invisible, strong enough to walk through walls, tall enough to touch the moon.
And when she paddled the Flambeau, needled canoes down through its high, unrunnable rapids, she knew she'd survive because she was immortal.

its ghost cat prowling
a floor of river stones

Conditions for an Agreement
All right, I said,
as petals sheared from the peony in the glass vase,
but I wasn't the one that started this.
Under the leaf a green worm
eats his way toward the fringed heart,
until the damage has been done.
All right, I said,
gathering scallops of cast-off color, but I am still afraid of promises. Where the stem is cut the sap seals and pinches brown, its loss an ache, an absence, a terror of mourning. All right, I said, sailing petals one by one from the balcony into the darkened shaft of evening. When afterimage is as real as image, when the canker no longer bites, and stem has forgotten the weight of the flower, only then, I said, will it be all right to cast my rings into the void and come there to meet you. Spell Against Leaving The bezoar, tourmaline formed by the waste of wild lynx, a golden anvil, mayfly nymph with vestigial wing: I release them all now that I am roused and sliding from the angle of repose.
