Big Trouble delights swing dancers, roots music fans, and blues lovers alike with a combination of swinging guitar, rough hewn vocalizing, swinging shuffle grooves, and pulsing horns. Big Trouble sounds both retro and modern danceably fun but still bluesy and deep. We've evolved from a harmonica dominated Chicago blues band into a jump r'n'b band with one of the best horn sections on the East Coast. We mix a healthy dose of swing, be-bop, and even rockabilly into our style. We started Big Trouble in 1992 as an alternative to all the bands that have given blues a bad name. The ones who do nothing but the most predictable cover songs, that can't swing, that have no real grounding in the music's history, and make no effort to reach out to new audiences. In a talk that Terence gave at Wetlands Preserve in 1998, he said: "The other night I searched (the Web) for 'self-transforming elf machines.' There were 36 hits! It surprised me. I sort of use the search engine like an oracle. I've used the phrase for DMT, 'Arabian hyperspace.' So I thought of this, and then I searched it, 'Arabian hyperspace,' in quotes. And it took me right to a transcript of the talk in which I'd said the thing! You can find your own mind on the Internet. I'm very grateful to the people who type up my talks and then post them at their websites ." Tremors on the Volcano: Afghanistan in Early 1979 By Terence Odlin Jan-March 1999 Lemar-Aftaab click on the photos to enlarge I first visited Afghanistan in 1971 and in 1972, during a long trip through the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Although I had some idea of Afghan geography and history, I was shocked to find how little I actually knew. Even so, the overall experiences I had were positive. In 1978, I received an M.A. in linguistics and was offered an English teaching position at Ferdowsi University in Mashhad, Iran. I gladly accepted, in part because of the travel opportunities in Iran and Afghanistan (the drive from Mashhad to the Afghan border takes only an hour or two). Indeed, I was able to visit Afghanistan for a third time, in January of 1979. This trip was the most memorable, but also the most disturbing. Before reaching the border, we noticed what seemed to be a common practice of letting some Afghans off the bus early. These individuals could not afford passports and could not, therefore, return home by crossing at the border checkpoints. I was struck by the pragmatic solution to this problem (the border officials no doubt knew all about the practice) and by the physical stamina of the Afghans, who seemed used to walking long distances. I would later see other examples of the same gritty perseverance. At the border, there were consular officials from the American and British embassies to help those who did not have their passports, which were in government offices in Mashhad paralyzed by the strikes. The Iranian and the Afghan border officials also proved helpful, and so the crossing went smoothly despite a number of delays. By evening, our bus had arrived in the city of Herat. The fragrance of the cedar trees on many streets welcomed me back.

I’m in front of the comp now, fingers itching to type and type. It’s been a while, you see. So here I go, sit back relax and use the scroll key, cause this was a 24 hour blast. It started off Monday morning at about 0800 hours, the phone rang twice, both were wrong numbers. Hai yoh. One of the two people was a cute girl voice, which is always nice in your ear in the morning... Too bad the one with the dude kept talking, it really messed with me fantasy. So I rolled over and went back to sleep. Ahhhhh, me life! The hours rolled by as often as I did in my bed. I was in the throngs of a dim sum dream (really really) inspired by the previous day’s breakfast chomping with Mama and Papa. Maaaaaan, seeing those fluffy, hot char siew paos can only be expressed with a pool of drool. Wow... Gargle gargle. The dream was going well, I was working my way through some lou mai kais, and egg tarts and siu mais. When a strange ringing in my ears began. Ask not for whom the phone rings, it rings for me. It was Qi Long. He was awake and we’ve made plans to go to Pyramid. So he said he was leaving his base and was en route to get me. I finally peeled my eyes open for the first time all morning and instinctively looked at the clock on the wall which read 9.43.
