Alfred Lord Tennyson
In the same year Alfred Tennyson wrote his first Arthurian poem "Morte d'Arthur" (1833), Samuel Taylor Coleridge claimed "as to Arthur, you could not by any means make a poem national to Englishmen. What have we to do with him?" (qtd. in Rosenberg "Tennyson"). This implication that Arthurian literature is escapist and irrelevant is a familiar criticism. In contrast and perhaps response, Tennyson called the Arthurian legend "the greatest of all poetical subjects," which partly explains why this tradition so heavily influenced his writing. With varying degrees of intensity, Tennyson drafted and revised his Arthurian epic Idylls of the King from his early twenties until a few months before his death, popularizing what became an avid Victorian interest in Arthuriana. Tennyson was born on the fifth of August in 1809 and grew up in a small village of Somersby, Lincolnshire. Throughout his childhood his father, George Clayton Tennyson, suffered from deteriorating mental health, epileptic fits, and alcoholism. Tennyson's father went to Cambridge to study for the church, eventually becoming responsible for the Somersby Rectory. Alfred and his siblings were known to play in a brook at the bottom of the Rectory garden, and it was the scene of castle-building and mock-tournaments. Elizabeth Fytche Tennyson, Alfred's mother, loved poetry and often read aloud to her children James Beattie's

D.233 ALFRED LORD TENNYSON PAPERS 5 boxes, 4 items This collection of Tennyson letters, manuscripts, printed material, memorabilia, and portraits was assembled by Rowland L. Collins, professor of English at the University of Rochester from 1967 until his death in 1985. The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections also houses his extensive Tennyson book collection (ZZ 6062). Selections from The Rowland L. Collins Collection of Alfred Lord Tennyson were exhibited from 12 November 1993 to 14 March 1994 in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The 1993 issue of The University of Rochester Bulletin (vol. XXXXIII) served as a catalogue of the exhibition and contains a complete listing of the books and manuscripts in the Collins Collection. A few Tennyson letters and manuscripts previously owned by the Department have been added to the Collins materials to form this manuscript collection. Several of these items were presented to the Library by Robert F. Metzdorf in honor of Rowland Collins, others were purchased from a Sotheby auction (July, 1980) with funds provided by an anonymous donor. The source of these items can be found on the verso of each. > Alfred, Lord Tennyson: a Memoir (1897), by Hallam, second Baron Tennyson, is the authoritative source for the poets biography., Mr R. H. Shepherd in his Tennysoniana (1866), supplied a list of criticisms on his work, and a bibliography issued separately in 1896. Among the numerous books on the subject of his life and writings may be mentioned: A Commentary on Tennysons In Memoriam (1901), by Prof. A. C. Bradley; Canon Rawnsleys Memories of the Tennysons (1900); Alfred Tennyson (1901), by Mr Andrew Lang; an essay on The Mission of Tennyson in Mr W. S. Lillys Studies in Religion and Literature (1904); and The Life of Lord Tennyson (1904), by Mr A. C. Benson, who gives a more critical estimate of the poet than was possible in the Memoir by his son.

      Mature Works and Later Life
      Tennyson's next published work, Poems The Princess (1847) was followed in 1850 by the masterful In Memoriam, The first group of Idylls of the King appeared in 1859; it was expanded in 1869 and 1872, and in 1885 Tennyson added the final poem. He arranged the 12 poems chronologically in 1888 to constitute a somber ethical epic of the glory and the downfall of King Arthur. In the Arthurian legend, Tennyson projected his vision of the hollowness of his own civilization. Included among his other works are Maud Enoch Arden (1864); several poetic dramas, most notably Becket (1879; produced 1893); Ballads and Other Poems (1880); and Demeter and Other Poems Tennyson passed his last years in comfort. In 1883 he was created a peer and occupied a seat in the House of Lords. Throughout much of his life he was a popular as well as critical success and was venerated by the general public. Unappreciated early in the 20th cent., Tennyson has since been recognized as a great poet, notable for his mastery of technique, his superb use of sensuous language, and his profundity of thought.

    And clouds are highest up in air. Lord Ronald brought a lily-white doe
    To give his cousin, Lady Clare. I trow they did not part in scorn:

    Alfred Tennyson
    Tennyson, Alfred , first Baron Tennyson (1809-92) English poet, born at Somersby, Linconshire, the forth son of the rector. He was very popular in Victorian England, his poems inspired many paintings.
    The Lady of Shallot , a poem, published in 1832. The subject was very popular during Victorian times and dealt with a beautiful imprisoned lady.
    See: William Holman Hunt The Lady of Shalott Mariana
    The character of Mariana from Shakespeare's Measure for Measure inspired Tennyson's poem Mariana, which described a woman waiting hopelessly in a desolate loneliness for her lover. The poem in its turn inspired Millais Mariana , shown at the Royal Academy in 1851 it was accompanied by the lines from Tennyson:
    She only said, 'My life is dreary-
    He cometh not' she said;
    She said, 'I am aweary, aweary -
    I would that I were dead'. Merlin and Vivien , poem by Tennyson, published in 1859. The wily Vivien, filled with hatred for Arthur and his court, seduces the aged wizard Merlin, the most important supporter of Arthur, and imprisons him forever in an old oak tree.
