In Memoriam (1850) and his Arthurian epic Idylls of the King (published in stages over a forty-year period), soon established themselves among the central, canonical works of English literature. Many of his shorter poems, such as "The Brook," "The May-Queen," and "The Charge of the Light Brigade," entered popular culture as songs or recitation-pieces. His poetry has spoken to intellectuals, to aesthetes, and to more ordinary readers for more than 150 years. Tennyson, more than any other British Poet Laureate, gave that oft-derided position a genuine literary distinction, and Tennyson was the first English poet ever given a peerage "for services to literature." His was a unique career in the close interrelations it demonstrates between a highly individual creative artist and the culture of his age. Included in this online version of the exhibit are the texts of several poems:

Recitals and Canticles
One of my favorite hobbies is memorizing and reciting poetry. Most of the poetry I recite is authored by Robert Service. I frequent various open mike events in my area and both recite and sing poems. It is called a canticle when you sing a poem. The poems that are recited are marked as Recital and the canticles are marked Canticle . Some poems I've made available as both recitals and canticles. Please contact me if you have any comments. Some of the poems have an extra field that links to an online text resource. Follow that link if you want to read the poem. Certainly hope you enjoy! The Charge Of The Light Brigade
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
This poem was written to memorialize a suicidal charge by light cavalry over open terrain by British forces in the Battle of Balaclava (Ukraine) in the Crimean War (1854-56). 247 men of the 637 in the charge were killed or wounded. Britain entered the war, which was fought by Russia against Turkey, Britain and France, because Russia sought to control the Dardanelles. Russian control of the Dardanelles threatened British sea routes. Many in the west best know of this war today because of Florence Nightingale, who trained and led nurses aiding the wounded during the war in a manner innovative for those times. The War was also noteworthy as an early example of work of modern war correspondents.

Alfred Lord Tennyson
Alfred Lord Tennyson was the most well known poet of the Victorian Age, an era characterized by its “fantasy / of constraint” (Neptune / Saturn). As we see in his planetary breakdown, Neptune and Saturn were also Tennyson’s key Transcendentals. In his astrocartography both of these planetary lines set over western Europe and the North Atlantic, a few degrees west of England. Tennyson joined a Spanish army faction in 1831 in the insurrection against King Ferdinand VII of Spain, and in this capacity he traveled to the Pyrenees (42N40; 1E00), a site directly under his Primary Neptune line. After his army companion Arthur Henry Hallam suddenly died in 1832, Tennyson imposed a “severe,” ten-year “period of silence” (Secondary Saturn) upon his literary publications. Ten years later, Tennyson achieved recognition as a great poet with the publication of

Alfred Tennyson
English author often regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age in poetry. Tennyson succeeded Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850; he was appointed by Queen Victoria and served 42 years. Tennyson's works were melancholic, and reflected the moral and intellectual values of his time, which made them especially vulnerable for later critic.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire. His father, George Clayton Tennyson, a clergyman and rector, suffered from depression and was notoriously absentminded. Alfred began to write poetry at an early age in the style of Lord Byron. After spending four unhappy years in school he was tutored at home. Tennyson then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he joined the literary club 'The Apostles' and met Arthur Hallam, who became his closest friend. The undergraduate society discussed contemporary social, religious, scientific, and literary issues. Encouraged by 'The Apostles', Tennyson published POEMS, CHIEFLY LYRICAL, in 1830, which included the popular 'Mariana'. He travelled with Hallam on the Continent. By 1830, Hallam had become engaged to Tennyson's sister Emily. After his father's death in 1831 Tennyson returned to Somersby without a degree. His next book, POEMS (1833), received unfavorable reviews, and Tennyson ceased to publish for nearly ten years. Hallam died suddenly on the same year in Vienna. It was a heavy blow to Tennyson. He began to write 'Im Memorian' for his lost friend - the work took seventeen years. A revised volume of Poems, which included the 'The Lady of Shalott' and 'The Lotus-eaters'. 'Morte d'Arthur' and 'Ulysses' appeared in 1842 in the two-volume POEMS, and established his reputation as a writer. In 'Ulysses Tennyson portrayed the Greek after his travels, longing past days: "How dull it is to pause, to make an end, / To rust unburnished, not to shine in use!"

Tennyson, Alfred Lord (1809-1892)
page: Surely few literary figures so directly challenge reductive notions of sexual identity as does the Victorian poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. In Memoriam is both Tennyson's greatest work and the most beautiful homoerotic elegy in the English language, yet there is little doubt that Tennyson himself was sexually attracted to women. Androgynous male characters and homoeroticism abound throughout Tennyson's poetry, particularly from his early years, but he is often considered one of the stuffiest and most prudish of his generation of writers. Sponsor Message.
So, one might ask, what does one do with Tennyson? Rather than dismissing him as an anomaly, it seems much more productive to allow Tennyson to disrupt our overly easy classifications of writers and to recognize through his work that transgression is much more common than rigid adherence to narrow, though convenient, literary and sexual categories. Tennyson's Life and Career Tennyson's life and career spans the nineteenth century, capturing the Victorian age in many of its complexities. Born on August 6, 1809, in Somersby, England, to an Anglican minister, George Clayton Tennyson, and his wife, Elizabeth Fytche Tennyson, Alfred demonstrated his considerable poetic talents at a very early age, composing his first lines of verse at age five and his first poem at age eight. He and his brothers Frederick and Charles produced a full book of poetry in 1827, when Alfred was barely eighteen.
