Alfred Tennyson was born 5 August 1809, third surviving child of the Rev. George Clayton Tennyson and Elizabeth Fytche Tennyson. Although George was an elder son, his younger brother Charles was made sole heir after a disagreement between George and his father, and George was forced to earn his living as a clergyman, which he hated , but there were eleven little Tennysons he had to support by 1819. Alfred himself started writing poetry at age eight and had written most of a blank verse play by age fourteen. The year he entered Cambridge, 1827, his first published poetry appeared in Poems by Two Brothers . At Cambridge, he made such friends as Edward FitzGerald, Thackeray , and Arthur Henry Hallam. In 1829 Alfred beat out Thackeray, among others, for a poetry prize. The following year, his Poems, Chiefly Lyrical

Alfred Tennyson Victorian poet
English author often regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age in poetry. Tennyson succeeded Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850; he was appointed by Queen Victoria and served 42 years. Tennyson's works were melancholic, and reflected the moral and intellectual values of his time, which made them especially vulnerable for later critic.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born on August 5, 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire. His father, George Clayton Tennyson, a clergyman and rector, suffered from depression and was notoriously absentminded. Alfred began to write poetry at an early age in the style of Lord Byron. After spending four unhappy years in school he was tutored at home. Tennyson then studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he joined the literary club 'The Apostles' and met Arthur Hallam, who became his closest friend. Tennyson published Poems, Chiefly Lyrical , in 1830, which included the popular "Mariana".
His next book, Poems (1833), received unfavorable reviews, and Tennyson ceased to publish for nearly ten years. Hallam died suddenly on the same year in Vienna. It was a heavy blow to Tennyson. He began to write "In Memoriam", an elegy for his lost friend - the work took seventeen years. "The Lady of Shalott", "The Lotus-eaters" "Morte d'Arthur" and "Ulysses" appeared in 1842 in the two-volume Poems and established his reputation as a writer.

Alfred Tennyson
(Redirected from Tennyson Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson August 6 October 6 ) is generally regarded as one of the greatest English poets of all time. Much of his verse was based on classical or mythological themes. Idylls of the King ) takes its subject from Arthurian romance. Later in his career, he attempted drama , but his plays enjoyed little success even in his lifetime. He was born in Lincolnshire , a rector 's son. His father had fallen out with his family and been disinherited; he drank heavily and became mentally unstable. Alfred and two of his elder brothers were writing poetry in their teens, and a collection of poems by all three was published locally when Alfred was only seventeen. One of those brothers, Charles Tennyson Turner , later married Louisa Sellwood, younger sister of Alfred's future wife. Educated at Louth grammar school and at Trinity College, Cambridge , Alfred Tennyson published his first solo collection of poems in . Although decried by critics as over-sentimental, his verse soon proved popular. One of his best-known poems

Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born the fourth son of a rector in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England in 1809. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and was first published in 1830. He continued to write despite early criticism of being too sentimental; many of his early poems, including The Lady of Shalott, were revised and freshly published in the volume Poems in 1842. By 1850 he was sufficiently established to succeed Wordsworth as Poet Laureate. He died in 1892. His reputation has ebbed and flowed ever since and he has many critics who consider that he represents nothing more than Victorianism. It is true that, for example, the subject of women's education was treated in a comic fashion within The Princess. Nonetheless, he could be a powerful poet as In Memoriam amply demonstrates. There is a reasonable selection here of the poet's prodigious output and I commend especially In Memoriam.
