Biography
By Nyesha Basey and Inez Ramsey

Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, but moved with her family to Toledo, Ohio , where she spent most of her childhood. She went to public schools and college in Toledo. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she joined the Peace Corp and spent two years teaching English and history. While living in Africa, she observed black pride and independence which reminded her of stories her father told her.
She returned to the United States to teach and recruit for the Peace Corp. She then studied journalism at the University of Colorado, where she received her Master's degree. While attending the university, she joined the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and helped to create a black studies program at the school. After graduating, she worked as a study skills coordinator. She decided to move to Los Angeles where she worked during the day and wrote at night. For more biographical information, visit

The son of a prosperous landowner and a former slave, Paul-Edward Logan is unlike any other boy he knows. His white father has acknowledged him and raised him openly-something unusual in post-Civil War Georgia. But ashe grows into a man he learns that life for someone like him is not easy. Black people distrust him because he looks white. White people discriminate against him when they learn of his black heritage. Even within his own family he facesbetrayal and degradation. So at the age of fourteen, he sets out toward the only dream he has ever had: to find land every bit as good as his father's, and make it his own. Once again inspired by her own history, Ms. Taylor brings truthand power to the newest addition to the award-winning Logan family stories. Book Review:

Although she was born in the South, her father moved the family to the North, settling in Toledo, Ohio, three weeks after she was born. The Taylors' migration to the North was because her father did not want to raise his daughters in the segregated, racist land of the South. However, the move to the North did not keep the family from frequenting the South often to visit family members. During these visits, the family would gather together and share family stories, which captivated Taylor tremendously. These family stories were centered on the values her family instilled in her, such as courage, dignity, and self-respect. Over time, Taylor realized the differences that existed between these inspiring stories and those she read about African Americans in the history books. "By the time I entered high school, I had a driving compulsion to paint a truer picture of Black people," she said.

    Mildred D.Taylor
Mildred D. Taylor The telling of family stories was a regular feature of Taylor family gatherings. Family storytellers told about the struggles relatives and friends faced in a racist culture, stories that revealed triumph, pride, and tragedy. The stories inspired Taylor, and she still has a vivid recollection of the storytelling sessions: The Friendship The Horn Book Magazine , March 1989, 179-80) From these stories, Taylor learned about her great-grandfather, the son of a white plantation owner in Alabama and a slave woman. In the late 1800s, this young man ran away from Alabama to buy land and settle in Mississippi; the land he purchased more than 100 years ago is still owned by the Taylor family.

    Biography of Mildred D. Taylor

by Carrie Margaret Steele (SHS) Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi , on September 13, 1943. She is the daughter of Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. Even though she was born in the South, she did not grow up there. Yet, for Ms. Taylor, the South still holds pleasant memories as the home of her ancestors. When she was only three months old, her parents moved her and her sister to live in the North. They moved to a newly-integrated Ohio town called Toledo. When she went to school, she was the only black child in her class. Her father decided to leave the South in the mid-1940's because he did not want his children to live their lives as he had lived his, in a segregated, racist society that allowed little or no opportunity to blacks. Over the years she came to know the South through the yearly trips her family took to Mississippi and through the stories told whenever the family gathered. Mildred Taylor was quoted in Something About the Author

    About the Logan Family Saga
All of Mildred D. Taylor’s novels to date are based on stories from her own family, stories she learned at family gatherings throughout her life. In her Author’s Note in The Land, she explains that her great-grandfather was the basis for the character Paul-Edward:
“In writing The Land, I have followed closely the stories told by my father and others about my great-grandparents. From as far back as I can remember, I had heard stories about my great-grandfather, who bought the family land in Mississippi. Born the children of an African-Indian woman and a white plantation owner during slavery, my great-grand- father and his sister were brought up by both their parents. Their father had three sons by a white wife, and he acknowledged all of his children. He taught his children to read and write and he ordered his white sons to share their school learning with them. All the children sat at their father’s table for meals, and my great-grandfather often went with his father and his brothers on their trips around the community.” ( The Land
Similarly, in her other novels, nearly all the events are based on stories Taylor has heard from her father and other family members; nearly all the characters are based on family members or acquaintances she has known or learned about. The Logan family saga, then, is essentially family history for Taylor. The saga begins with Paul-Edward Logan in

    Biography of Mildred Taylor (1943-)
Mildred Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, to Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. She would later say she "was born in a segregated city in a segregated state in a segregated America." The Taylors had lived in Missisissippi since the times of slavery. But, only three weeks after their daughter's birth, the Taylor family moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Mildred Taylor would remain until graduating from the University of Toledo in 1965. Several incidents of racial violence had occurred in the Jackson area around the time of September 1943, and Taylor's father decided to seek a new life for his family in the North. He chose Toledo because a large network of friends and relatives already made their homes there. Still, the Taylor family took long car trips to the South throughout Mildred's childhood, and the environments experienced on these trips would provide the settings for her future novels. The family traveled each summer to a pre-Civil Rights era South, where segregation remained a reality. But for Taylor, the South of racism and segregation was also a "South of family and community." The mule Jack and mare Lady, who appear in the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry were the real animals Taylor rode during her summers in the South.

Mildred Taylor of the United States
I am pleased to nominate Mildred D. Taylor (b. 1943, Jackson, Mississippi) for the 2003 NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature. For close to three decades she has been one of the foremost writers for young people in the United States, producing a series of nine titles unlike any other in the world of children's and/or young-adult literature.
Her distinguished career began in 1974 when her manuscript for the novelette Song of the Trees Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (1976), won the 1977 Newbery Award from the American Library Association, the most prestigious honor in American children's literature. Beginning with Song of the Trees , to date Taylor has written nine books that have been recognized with many other major American children's book awards in addition to the Newbery: the Coretta Scott King Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Christopher Award, and the New York Times Outstanding Book Award among others.
What makes Mildred Taylor's series extraordinary is their depth. While many series are simply marketing ploys, each book in Taylor's series possesses a literary integrity in and of itself, while also contributing to the whole. The series can be considered historical fiction, set within a timeframe stretching from the slavery era through the early Civil Rights movement. And indeed, part of her intent is to educate. Says Taylor
