(64 archival boxes) Provenance: The collection began with a gift from Allen Tate in 1941, grew from additional gifts from him over several decades, and achieved its final form with a purchase from his widow in 1979. Photocopying, literary rights, and citation: Biographical Sketch (John Orley) Allen Tate (1899-1979), poet, critic, and professor of letters from the American South, was born on November 19 in Winchester, Kentucky. In 1918, he was admitted to Vanderbilt University, where he excelled, earning top honors and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He became the only undergraduate admitted to membership in the Fugitives, an informal group of Southern intellectuals which exerted considerable influence on American letters throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1924, Tate married Caroline Gordon, a novelist. They had one child, and he later divorced her to marry Isabella Stewart Gardner. He then divorced Gardner to marry Helen Heinz, with whom he had three children. Though he lived in France from 1928-1932 in the company of such writers as Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein, Tate continued to focus his writings on Southern themes. He published numerous volumes of poetry and prose, including one novel

Allen Tate (1899-1979) Biography John Orley "Allen" Tate was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on November 19, 1899. Educated at numerous schools growing up, Tate eventually decided to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1922. He had already become a published poet and cofounder of The Fugitive a literary review focusing on the formal techniques of poetry and defending the traditional values of the agrarian South. Upon leaving Vanderbilt, Tate took a job teaching high school in West Virginia in 1924. He met his wife, Caroline Gordon, while in West Virginia spending time with long-time friend and roommate at Vanderbilt—Robert Penn Warren. For the next few years, the Tates lived in New York City while Allen worked as a critic and free-lance writer. After receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Tates moved to France and became friends with many of the expatriates. In 1930, he and his wife settled down in the small town of Clarksville, Tennessee, and for the next three decades Tate taught at several universities. He taught poetry at Princeton from 1939-1942, and eventually retired from teaching at the University of Minnesota in 1951. Tate died in 1979. Allen Tate (1899-1979) Contributing Editor: Anne Jones Classroom Issues and Strategies It may be difficult to get students without some personal investment in/against the Confederacy or at least the American South to respond initially at all to a poem that presumes the identification of classical heroism with Confederate soldiery. Watching a segment from Ken Burns's popular PBS series, "The Civil War," which made much of the lives of ordinary soldiers from both sides, might help to get past initial alienation; so might a discussion of the place of the American South in contemporary ideology, especially in popular culture. Once the distances of history and regional difference are addressedand even if they aren'tthe pairing of poem and essay makes it possible to teach close reading in an especially intimate and interesting way. Students can learn techniques of analysis from Tate's reading of his own poem, and they can at the same time sharpen their own skills by resisting specific claims of his reading. The pairing offers the opportunity as well to examine, address, and discuss the history and value of the New Criticism, of which Tate was a founder and his essay is, presumably, an example. What sorts of reading does he reject and why? What sorts does he simply fail to mention? Issues of gender and femininity in particular seem oddly and obscurely present in the essay; they invite a second look at the poem for its implicit gender stakes.
