Photo by Robert Foothorap Spectral appearance: Amy Tan stumps next week for local public school libraries. Bay Area author Amy Tan talks about fame and phantoms By Gretchen Giles It's 11 o'clock on a bleary December morning in South Carolina and Amy Tan is just getting oriented. After nearly two months traveling across the nation to promote her latest novel, The Hundred Secret Senses , Tan has lost track of herself. "Purgatory is one long airplane trip with only memories of hotel rooms," she moans lightheartedly over the phone from her hotel room. "When I got up today, I kept thinking, where am I? What city am I in? It was first thing in the morning and I was actually standing upawakein the room, trying to figure out where I was. "It's like punishment for writing a book." But Tan is taking her punishment gamely, traveling coast to coast on press junkets and readings. On Wednesday, Dec. 20, she'll find herself as close to her San Francisco home as she's likely to get, standing on the stage at the Santa Rosa High School Auditorium, giving a reading sponsored by Copperfield's Books to benefit local school libraries. This writer of such popular fiction as The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife now has her name emblazoned in type larger than the title across the cover of her latest work. Couldn't Tan just bow out of the promotion game for a while, and let the book sell itself? "Maybe it's that old Chinese guilt that makes me unable to say 'No, I'm not going to do it,'" she answers reflectively. "In the past, I didn't do much [promotion].

Whilst creating characters from backgrounds which are new in fiction, her themes of family relationships and the search for identity are universal. The Joy Luck Club stayed on The New York Times best-seller lists for half of 1989. Its success in hardback earned over $1 million in paperback rights. The novel has been translated into 17 languages including Chinese. The Joy Luck Club (1989) tells the stories of four Chinese mothers who form the mah-jong playing social and investment club in San Francisco, interlaced with those of their Americanised daughters. The Kitchen God's Wife (1991) draws on Tan's mother's life story, and The Hundred Secret Senses (1995) blends a supernatural plot of past lives in nineteenth century China with a modern story of two half-sisters. Tan has also written children's books including

It’s been half a decade since the world heard from Amy Tan. The bestselling San Francisco author attracted worldwide attention in 1989 with her debut novel, The Joy Luck Club
Shortly after the publication of Tan’s third novel, 1995’s The Hundred Secret Senses , her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Soon after that, the writer’s best friend, her New York editor Faith Sale, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer that has been linked to exposure to asbestos. It was, Tan acknowledges on a chilly San Francisco morning last fall, a devastating time. Her voice is sweetly husky as she begins to smile. "But I have to say it was a wonderful time. There’s something great about taking care of another person completely, and knowing nothing is guaranteed."
Tan maintained a bicoastal existence for four years as she tended to her mother in San Francisco while frequently visiting Sale in New York, where she had another residence. Gradually, she withdrew from the public eye, limiting her appearances as she became more focused on the health of her loved ones.

    Biographical Information
Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California, in 1952. Her father, who was educated in Beijing and worked for the United States Information Service after the war, immigrated to America in 1947. Her mother came to the United States in 1949 shortly before the Communists seized control of Shanghai; she was forced to leave behind three daughters from a previous marriage. Ms. Tan grew up in Fresno, Oakland, and Berkeley, as well as the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area. When she was fourteen, her father and older brother both died of brain tumors. Following this double tragedy, her mother took Amy and her younger brother to live in Europe, where she graduated from high school in Montreaux, Switzerland in 1969. From 1969 to 1976, Ms. Tan attended five colleges: Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, where she met her husband, Lou DeMattei; San Jose City College; San Jose State University, from which she received a B.A. with a double major in English and Linguistics; University of California/Santa Cruz; and University of California/Berkeley.
