Selected Poetry
My Polar Star
I have made You the polar star of my
existence; never again can I lose my way in the
voyage of life. Wherever I go, You are always there to
shower your benefience all around me. Your face
is ever present before my mind's eyes. If I lose sight of You even for a moment, I
almost lose my mind. Whenever my heart is about to go astray, just
a glance of You makes it feel ashamed of itself. Index of Poems
The Kiss
Lips' language to lips' ears. Two drinking each other's heart, it seems. Two roving loves who have left home, pilgrims to the confluence of lips. Two waves rise by the law of love to break and die on two sets of lips. Two wild desires craving each other meet at last at the body's limits. Love's writing a song in dainty letters, layers of kiss-calligraphy on lips. Plucking flowers from two sets of lips perhaps to thread them into a chain later. This sweet union of lips is the red marriage-bed of a pair of smiles.

Rabindranath Tagore Gitanjali
Song Offerings
Verses:
Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life. This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new. At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable. Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill. Back to Gitanjali Index When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would break with pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes. All that is harsh and dissonant in my life melts into one sweet harmony - and my adoration spreads wings like a glad bird on its flight across the sea. I know thou takest pleasure in my singing. I know that only as a singer I come before thy presence. I touch by the edge of the far-spreading wing of my song thy feet which I could never aspire to reach.

Tagore, History and Cultural Studies
By Victor A. van Bijlert
But Tagore wrote more than poems and songs, more than short stories, novels, travelogues, plays and letters. As a perceptive intellectual of his times he also commented on politics, social questions and religious and cultural matters in numerous essays and lectures. This body of religious, cultural and political writings has been little studied so far, in spite of the fact that it made an important contribution to the canon of Bengali nationalist literature of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century, a truth to which Tapan Raychaudhuri in his book Europe Reconsidered, Perceptions of the West in Nineteenth Century Bengal , (1988) frankly testifies (Preface, p xii). Subaltern Studies
Also in the two recent books by Partha Chatterjee (1993 2nd ed.; 1993) on Bengali and Indian nationalism in the colonial nineteenth century we find only scant reference to Tagore. Chatterjee, belonging to the prestigious historiographical school of the Subaltern Studies
Its early theoretical 'canon' of Cultural Studies embraces among other schools Marxism, the Frankfurter Schule, English literary theory and a bit of classical Anarchist thought, as well as authors like Clifford Geertz, Bourdieu, and Stuart Hall. This canon is now expanding in various directions and incorporates many new fields of sociological and historical study such as women's and minority studies. The most recent unfolding of Cultural Studies can be grasped from a number of anthologies, among which the ones edited by Lawrence Grossberg, Cary Nelson, Paula Treichler (1992); Simon During (1993); and Valda Blundell, John Shepherd, Ian Taylor (1993), are the more prominent. The monographs by Norman K. Denzin (1992) and Fred Inglis (1993) offer vigorously critical and historical surveys of the entire field.

96. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore

http://www.indembassyhavana.cu/Indiafactsheets/Tagore/Tagoresp.htm
(contributed by P.Ravi Sarma) Born: Calcutta, May 7, 1861 Died: Calcutta, August 7, 1941 Nobel Prize: 1913 Literature for his work "Gitanjali", for the English version, published in 1912. Poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, essayist, musician, artist, actor, director, educator, philosopher and activist (rather than a politician), Rabindranath Tagore was fourteenth of fifteen children born to Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He started writing when he was eight and published his first work of poetry in 1875. He founded Santi Niketan in 1901 and it later became the Viswa Bharathi University in 1918. He was knighted in 1915 but renounced it in 1919 in protest following the Jhullianwallah Bagh massacre by the British near Amritsar in Punjab. The award of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Rabindranath Tagore was announced on November 13, 1913 by Harold Hjarne, Chairman of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy. Tagore, then 52 years old, was the first Asian to receive the award. It was given for Tagore's English version of "Gitanjali". Gitanjali was initially published in Bengali, Tagore's mother tongue, in 1910 as a book of poems. He translated selections from the book into English in free verse and published the work in 1912.
