Transcontinental Vision
One Poet Goes Against The Grain Of Confessionalism's Egocentrism. By David Penn The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998, by Arthur Sze (Copper Canyon Press). Paper, $17. WHEN POETRY strikes us as insufficient, it's often because once we've navigated the dense, lurid and/or luminous terrain, after we've penetrated the zip-bang, hip intellectual irony (of everything but the zip-bang, hip intellectual irony itself), we discover the poem is little more than a path to meager profunditya sober "aw shucks" in the face of some "hard but true" aspect of emotional life. This is in part an aspect of a Western culture that prefers a world of zero tolerance and "affirmations" over a universe of personal insight. In part, this is the legacy of modern poetry's confessionalist counter-revolution of Lowell, Sexton and Plath almost a half-century ago. But this terrain is also the province of poets whose work never rises above the minor miracle of its own self-expression: the infatuation with the power of creative language to project, combined with an ego insatiably trying to articulate itself as something distinct, worthy of mercy and sympathy. The best of the poetry of Arthur Szenearly 30 years of which has been collected by Copper Canyon Press in The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 goes against the grain of confessionalism's egocentrism. Against the tendency to limit expression to the small valve of the ego or the merely political self, Sze's poems strike with imagination and a thoroughly integrative aesthetic eye preoccupied, as the critic-poet Clayton Eshleman suggests, "with all the poet knows about himself and his world."

Achin' To Be - Maybe the most depressing
Replacements song. You need some professional

Abstract marks against a white canvas. posted by Shin Yu @ 11/20/2003 07:43:10 PM My reading with Arthur Sze yesterday was quite possibly the highlight of my year. Sadly, Carol, Arthur's wife, had to cancel at the last minute. Their 4 year old daughter, Sarah, developed a fever and she was too sick too travel so Carol decided to stay behind. The reading took place at Simmons College in a huge conference room with ceilings so high I felt lost. There were hundred of students and faculty and I was very nervous and stammered and stumbled over words. Some things never change. To hear Arthur read his work is to revel in the beauty that is poetry. He read pieces from his collected poems, translations from The Silk Dragon and closed with a wonderful elegiac piece called "Earth Shine" for one of his colleagues at IAIA who commit suicide very suddenly. Years ago, Arthur lost another dear poet friend, I think his name was Gu Chung. I watch the way Arthur engages with the world, the way he answers a question from the audience, how at ease he is with the world, and in his work, and I learn so much about how I would like to engage in this world. The language of science, symbols from classical Chinese art and literature, the heart breaks open with every word.
