Arthur Sze has constructed a complicated tapestry of poems informed by his Chinese American heritage, his rich knowledge of American Indian culture, and classical Chinese poetry. Telling you about his background, influences, and ideas falls pretty far short of the mark, though. These poems succeed at the level of execution, in finding just the right words to suggest, say, a Zen sensibility, while using contemporary American English to describe the complicated interplay between the natural and...

The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998

If you don't know Sze's work, this is a good place to start, and if you do it's a fine "Best of" collection with a few new poems added. I liked it a great deal, and kept picking it up and rereading some of the poems. However, Sze isn't one of my favorite poets, and after some thought I finally decided why. He belongs to the school of poets (both Western and Eastern) who see everything in the universe as interconnected and every part, from a dragonfly to a planet, as emblematic of the whole. I...

Be True to Yourself, Says Poet Arthur Sze dg nanouk okpik Santa Fe, NM I am more interested in a poem like a piece of artwork. In my own experience in the world I find myself constantly being surprised. Who is your favorite writer of all time? Who are you reading? "The writers of the past challenge me. In Chinese tradition I always lean towards the Tao Poet-Philosophers, Lao-tzu, Chuangtzu, Tian Wen, The Questions Regarding Heaven , I Ching-The structures or the process of divination are important to me. In Western literature, Shakespeare, Dante, and Yeats, who got better and better as he got older.
In what direction do you see poetry going? Where are young writers leading? Poetry is wide open now. There are so many points of view, so many styles. It makes towards diversity, a bit of controversy, which is good. It might be bewildering for a young poet to feel, so I fit in, or do I not fit in? One can look at the different poetry movements of contemporary poetry like Deep Image, Black Mountain, the Beats and the Language Poets. Their resonance is still in the air. There are movements that have been done and are over with like Language Poets. They have been done a long time ago even though people still talk about it. So, on the one hand, it is a bit bewildering because there are so many literary magazines and poetry magazines. What one has to do is to look inside and ask, What it is I want to do? What is given to me to do in this time of my life? What it is to be a writer? The writing will speak for itself.

At six a.m. the Big Dipper has swung overhead;
in an hour you will look up to rose-tinged
cirrus clouds. When I shut my eyes, I hear
waves unfurl, wake to cries of birds before
sunrise, recall the imprint of our bodies in white sand; from the beach, water deepens into teal blue in no time. Aqueous gold ripples on the surfaces of waves, but when

our emotions resemble leaves and alive
to their shapes we are nourished.
Have you felt the expanse and contours of grief
along the edges of a big Norway maple?
Have you winced at the orange flare
searing the curves of a curling dogwood?
I have seen from the air logged islands,
each with a network of branching gravel roads,
and felt a moment of pure anger, aspen gold.
I have seen sandhill cranes moving in an open field, a single white whooping crane in the flock. And I have traveled along the contours of leaves that have no name. Here where the air is wet and the light is cool, I feel what others are thinking and do not speak, I know pleasure in the veins of a sugar maple, I am living at the edge of a new leaf. Arthur Sze ohh that's lovely, i love that last phrase, some amazing stuff there... *in awe* g403, is this a translation?

Spring night: one quarter of an hour

Flowers have clear fragrance;

Songs and flutes on the upstairs terrace
the thread-like sound is fine, fine.

For Immediate Release: July 1, 1998 Contact: Pat Matsueda Poet Arthur Sze reads July 26 from The Zigzag Way On Sunday, July 26, celebrated poet and translator Arthur Sze will give a free reading of his work in the Yukiyoshi Room of Krauss Hall on the UH-Manoa campus at 7:30 p.m. Second-generation Chinese born in New York City, Sze is director of the Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work has received awards recently from the Lannan Foundation, the Witter Bynner Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. "Arthur Sze composes an elegant, quietly intense, very human, beautiful poetry," according to the African American poet Quincy Troupe, who considers Sze "one of the foremost poets of his generation." Sze's poetry draws upon many influences, including Buddhist and Native American Indian art and culture, using vivid, surrealist imagery. Mixing the past and present, his poetry is often surprising: Zen monks carry fax machines; plastic bowls arc mixed with relics of the Han dynasty; and images of the Los Alamos testing grounds are contrasted with an afternoon mushroom hunt. Sze will read from The Red Shifting Web, his most recent collection of poems, as well as from the tenthanniversary issue of Manoa, titled The Zig-Zag Way. The issue, guest edited by Sze, features sixteen avantgarde Chinese poets writing with an acute awareness of how the Chinese government's suppression of democracy has made a new poetic voice necessary-one that speaks in a "zigzag way."
