    Amends to Nature
      I HAVE loved colours, and not flowers;
      Their motion, not the swallows wings;
      And wasted more than half my hours
      Without the comradeship of things.
      How is it, now, that I can see,
      With love and wonder and delight,
      The children of the hedge and tree,
      The little lords of day and night?
      How is it that I see the roads,
      No longer with usurping eyes,
      A twilight meeting-place for toads,
      A mid-day mart for butterflies?
      I feel, in every midge that hums,
      Life, fugitive and infinite,
      And suddenly the world becomes
      A part of me and I of it.

    Javanese Dancers
      T WITCHED strings, the clang of metal, beaten drums,
      Dull, shrill, continuous, disquieting:
      And now the stealthy dancer comes
      Undulantly with cat-like steps that cling;
      Smiling between her painted lids a smile,
      Motionless, unintelligible, she twines
      Her fingers into mazy lines,
      The scarves across her fingers twine the while.
      One, two, three, four glide forth, and, to and fro,
      Delicately and imperceptibly,
      Now swaying gently in a row

He was editor of the Savoy (1896) until a period of insanity, movingly described in his Confessions (1930), incapacitated him from 1908 to 1910. After that time he was forced to live very quietly. His chief critical work is The Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899); others are The Romantic Movement in English Poetry (1909) and studies of Baudelaire, Blake, and Rossetti. His poetry includes Days and Nights Poems (1902), and Love's Cruelty See biography by K. Beckson (1987); studies by J. M. Munro (1969) and L. W. Market (1987).

Arthur Symons: The Two Illusions
by Paul Elmer More
It is a saying of Joubert, as subtle as it is true, that the essence of art is to be found in the union of l'illusion et la sagesse ,-illusion and, to extend the meaning of the French phrase somewhat, disillusion; and for one who cares to penetrate into the secret influences of poetry on the human heart, no better guide can be suggested than this brief sentence. But like all such generalisations it is susceptible of a false application in practice as well as a right one, a distinction which has been newly and emphatically attested by the publication of the collected poems of Mr. Arthur Symons. For there is a true illusion without which poetry cannot exist, without which it sinks to the level of unimaginative prose or passes into the thin aridities of metaphysics. In its simplest form this illusion may, perhaps, he seen in the pastoral world of our Elizabethan poets, in the Lycidas and Comus of Milton best of all; and the skill to lend reality to these idyllic dreams might even seem one of the surest tests of a poet's right to deal with the high illusion of art. Lycidas springs from this theme just as much as the youthful Pastorals of Pope, but what a chasm there lies between them! As the poet's thoughts and aspirations are lifted up beyond the thoughts of common men, so he is able without violating artistic illusion to carry his reader into ideal scenes never beheld on this earth. The noble isolation of Milton's soul schooled him to speak understandingly the ideal language of Arcadia, and something within our souls responds to every word. But in the mouth of a worldling like Pope this language becomes a shallow affectation and conveys no illusion of reality to the reader.

Symbolism
Symbolism, an aesthetic movement devoted primarily to discovering the true nature of poetry, originated in France in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Charles Baudelaire Edgar Allan Poe 's major premise about the poetic principlethat poetry is an evocation of eternal states through the discrete image or symbolinto a program for purifying poetry of the nonpoetic. The artists we classify as Symbolists aimed at purifying their art of all that was nonessential (some, such as Villiers de l'Isle Adam, were dramatists; a few, such as J. K. Huysmans, were novelists). Symbolist poets such as Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, for example, rejected both the superficial rhetoric of argument and discussion and the dense notation of description and narration, all things that had obscured the true nature of poetry, in favor of the severe purity of a symbolic lyricism. The Symbolist poem was necessarily short, evocative, and mysterious.
Symbolism was introduced into the English-speaking world by Verlaine's friend Arthur Symons (1865-1945). In

Introduction
Arthur Symons, a British poet, literary critic, and translator, was born in Wales and educated privately. He was an admirer of the French poets known as the Symbolists*, and he expounded their ideas in critical works such as The Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899) and in biographies of symbolist poets, including Charles Baudelaire (1920). In his own poetry, which included the volumes Days and Nights (1899) and Silhouettes (1892), he emulated the symbolist style. Among his other works are The Romantic Movement in English Poetry (1909) and the autobiographical Confessions This collection includes manuscripts, typescripts, notebooks, tear sheets, clippings, photographs, watercolors, paintings, and much miscellaneous material. A few letters to Symons are also included in this collection; however, the bulk of his correspondence appears to have been dispersed before his death.

http://users.bigpond.net.au/nettheim/pachmann/pacgodow.htm
[This article first appeared in Saturday Review , vol. ?, date ?, pp. ?. It was reprinted in The Living Age , Vol 254, 10th August, 1907, pp.274-276, from which this transcription has been prepared.] Pachmann: with a word on Godowsky by Arthur Symons Pachmann is the Verlaine or Whistler of the pianoforte. He has the head of a monk who has had commerce with the Devil, and it is whispered that he has sold his soul to the diabolical instrument, which, since buying it, can speak in a human voice. The sounds torture him, as a wizard is tortured by the shapes he has invoked. He makes them dance for his pleasure, and you hear their breath come and go, in the swell and subsiding of those marvellous crescendos and diminuendos which set the strings pulsating like a sea. He listens for the sound, listens for the last echo of it after it is gone, and is caught away from us visibly into that unholy company. He would tell us that he had practised the piano with more patience than others, that he had taken more trouble to acquire a certain touch which is really the only way to the secret of his instrument. He could tell you little more; but, if you saw his hands settle on the keys, and fly and poise there, as if they had nothing to do with the perturbed, listening face that smiles away from them, you would know how little he had told you. Now let us ask Godowsky, whom Pachmann himself sets above all other pianists, what he has to tell us about the way in which he plays.

A foolish rhythm turns in my idle head
As a wind-mill turns in the wind on an empty sky.
Why it is when love, which men call deathless, is dead,
That memory, men call fugitive, will not die?
Is love not dead? yet I hear that tune if I lie
Dreaming awake in the night on my lonely bed, And an old thought turns with the old tune in my head As a wind-mill turns in the wind on an empty sky. The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about From The symbolist movement in literature
By Arthur Symons
VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM
A chacun son infini
Descendant of the original Rodolphe le Bel, Seigneur de Villiers (1067), through Jean de Villiers and Maria de l'Isle and their son Pierre the first Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, a Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, born in 1384, had been Marshal of France under Jean-sans-Peur, Duke of Burgundy; he took Paris during the civil war, and after being imprisoned in the Bastille, reconquered Pontoise from the English, and helped to reconquer Paris. Another Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, born in 1464, Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, defended Rhodes against 200,000 Turks for a whole year, in one of the most famous sieges in history; it was he who obtained from Charles V. the concession of the isle of Malta for his Order, henceforth the Order of the Knights of Malta. For Villiers, to whom time, after all, was but a metaphysical abstraction, the age of the Crusaders had not passed. From a descendant of the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, the nineteenth century demanded precisely the virtues which the sixteenth century had demanded of that ancestor. And these virtues were all summed up in one word, which, in its double significance, single to him, covered the whole attitude of life: the word "nobility." No word returns oftener to the lips in speaking of what is most characteristic in his work, and to Villiers moral and spiritual nobility seemed but the inevitable consequence of that other kind of nobility by which he seemed to himself still a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It was his birthright.

The Poetry of arthur symons. 1. What types of emotions or reflectionsdoes symons tend to project only his sunsets and open seas?
http://www.uiowa.edu/~english/faculty/boos/images/questions/symonsweb.htm
The Poetry of Arthur Symons 1. What types of emotions or reflections does Symons tend to project only his sunsets and open seas? According to his own definition of "decadent," what is "decadent" about his responses? 2. Is there a consistent male persona throughout most of Symons' shorter lyrics? When the male persona appears, what is his relationship to the dancing woman? 3. Why is the image of the dancer dancing so significant to Symons? Does it always evoke the same complex of meanings? 4. Do Symons' personae ever find happiness or satisfaction? If so, when and under what circumstances is this possible? 5. Early in his career Symons wrote a critical book on Browning's poetry. For those of you familiar with his poetry, which aspects of Browning's sensibility or manner do you find reflected in Symons' poems? 6. Throughout Symons' lyrics there are reiterated verbal echoes of Rossetti poems and reworkings of Rossettian themes. Are these merely fortuitous historical parallels or do they reflect a more specific psychological kinship? How does Symons alter his presentation of traits inherited from Rosssetti? 7. In Symons' bohemian underworld, what, if any, are the characteristics of erotic love? Of human relationships in general?
