STELLA MARIS by: Arthur Symons (1865-1945)
HY is it I remember yet
You, of all women one has met,
In random wayfare, as one meets
The chance romances of the streets,
The Juliet of a night? I know
Your heart holds many a Romeo.
And I, who call to mind your face
    In so serene a pausing-place,
Where the bright pure expanse of sea,
Seems a reproach to you and me,
I too have sought on many a breast
    The ecstasy of an unrest,
I too have had my dreams, and met
(Ah me!) how many a Juliet.
Why is it, then, that I recall
You, neither first nor last of all?
For, surely as I see to-night
The phantom of the lighthouse light,
Against the sky, across the bay,
Fade, and return, and fade away,
So surely do I see your eyes
    Out of the empty night arise;
Child, you arise and smile to me
Out of the night, out of the sea,
The Nereid of a moment there,
And is it seaweed in your hair?
O lost and wrecked, how long ago,
Out of the drowning past, I know
You come to call me, come to claim
My share of your delicious shame.
Child, I remember, and can tell
One night we loved each other well

. The Salzburg Tales. New York, 1934. First American Edition. Very nice copy, bookplate clumsily removed from fly-leaf.
The author's first book.
STEEN (Marguerite) . The Tavern. 1935. First Edition. Cloth a little worn at head and foot of spine and quite severe foxing throughout. From the library of the dedicatee, William Nicholson, with his name, in the form of a monogram, on the fly-leaf.
In 1943 Ms Steen published a biography of Nicholson. She is perhaps best remembered for her late work The Sun is My Undoing. Her life has much in common with that of Naomi Jacob (q.v.). Both were prolific novelists, both were workaholics, each published a first novel at a relatively early age, each worked for a time as a schoolteacher, each went on the stage, neither married.

The Symbolist movement in literature
SYMONS, Arthur William (1865-1945) In The Decadent Movement in Literature "Impressionism and symbolism are really working on the same hypothesis, applied in different directions.... The Impressionist...would flash upon you in a new, sudden way so exact an image of what you have just seen.... The Symbolist in this new, sudden way, would flash upon you the 'soul' of that which can be apprehended only by the soulthe finer sense of things unseen, the deeper meaning of things evident." Lionel Johnson to Katherine Tynan: "Symons is a slave to impressionism, whether the impression be precious or not. A London fog, the blurred, tawny lamplights, the red omnibus, the dreary rain, the depressing mud, the glaring gin-shop, the slatternly shivering women: three dexterous stanzas telling you that and nothing more."

ARTHUR SYMONS IL GRIDO DELL'ACQUA
O acqua, voce del mio cuore, che gridi tra la sabbia,
Tutta la notte gridi con lugubre grido,
Mentre io giaccio e ascolto e non so capire
Ritorna
